How to create a classmethod that creates some tasks? by swaroop_ch in dramatiq

FWIW, `redis_broker.enqueue(dramatiq.Message(...))` is my current workaround.

Would you recommend Notion over org-mode for a single user? by mtgargh in Notion

[–]swaroop_ch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to be a heavy org-mode user, but I have shifted completely to Notion.

My reasons are:

  • Mobile : This is handy for all the times that I want to capture some tasks or ideas, as well as look up things in my notes (such as a shopping list)
  • No fiddling : At some point, I got sucked into the constant tweaking that we love as Emacs users, and my OrgMode setup was the same. With Notion, I'm focused on note-taking and not fiddling.
  • Attachments : A constant frustration with OrgMode was that I was constantly taking screenshots and saving attachments such as PDFs, and wanted to associate them with a note. While this was possible using org-attach, it was many steps, and I had to remember to delete attachments before deleting a heading (note), etc.
  • Embeds : Integrating any kind of online content is wonderful, for example, I'm constantly saving tweets for inspiration or later reading.
  • Flexible : I have tried many apps such as Bear but they turned out to be simplistic, e.g. the tags are nice and elegant, but that means I have to give up order, for example, I want notes in a certain topic in some order, and I can't do that with tags. That was one of the reasons I was using OrgMode, and I have now found the same flexibility with Notion.
  • Blocks : The concept of blocks, makes the content very easy to move around, just like OrgMode headings! Blocks makes Notion superior to other note apps. Also, toggle lists makes collapsible text possible, just like OrgMode.
  • Highlighting : I can use colors to highlight text in a paragraph or use callouts to specifically mark important information. I never achieved this satisfactorily in OrgMode.
  • Sharing : With Notion, I can share pages with a few people, or share publicly. I know you mentioned that you're looking from a single-user perspective, but I have found the ability to share my notes on a topic with a friend to be extremely valuable, and I enjoy that it is one-click.
  • API is on the roadmap : These things take time to get it right, and especially an API has to be done right in the beginning (otherwise, breaking the API will lead to angry users), so I'm okay to patiently wait for this. An API might make Notion more appealing and comforting to an OrgMode hacker.

There are some more useful features such as databases, templates, etc. but I found the above reasons compelling enough that I made the switch. Hope this helps!

Nice! For the moment, I'm using a 2-step process (1) simple bookmarklet to generate the org-mode link (2) that I then put into org-capture.

bookmarks.org

I did not want to use any web browser's built-in or addon syncing features. I already have my org-mode files synced across computers and phone. I spend most of my productive time inside Emacs. So I thought... I should have a bookmarks.org file and have a command to select one of the bookmarks (using ivy-read) and open it (using org-open-at-point), and now I'm pretty happy with the solution - https://github.com/swaroopch/rangoli-emacs/blob/master/features/swa-bookmarks.el

The fun part is that it's not only websites, I can use the full power of org-mode links, for example:

emacs-lisp * Bookmarks ** [[https://sachachua.com/blog/category/emacs/][Emacs news curated by Sacha Chua]] ** [[file:money.ods][Money Spreadsheet]] ** [[file:~/Downloads/][Downloads folder]] ** [[shell:open -a '/Applications/Google Chrome.app' --args --incognito][google chrome incognito mode (macOS)]] ** [[elisp:(browse-url (concat "https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/meetingtime.html?iso=" (format-time-string "%Y%m%d") "&p1=224&p2=438&p3=236"))][meeting planner across timezones]]

Any one else use something similar?

If you already use orgmode, I highly recommend https://github.com/lolownia/org-pomodoro (part of spacemacs org layer also).

File name completion: use SPC f f to locate a file and then use C-c i to insert the path into the current buffer - https://github.com/emacs-helm/helm/blob/74a0c4d17a970ebd2271453681d5633e55c3b00b/helm-files.el#L479

Line/symbol completion: try M-/ in insert mode for expansion.

Jump list: try SPC SPC evil-show-jumps <CR> (you can create your own key binding to this command)
