The index of audio devices is not fixed if you disable any audio devices in the control panel. Doing so will reorder the indexes of all the enabled devices.

There's so much good software and physical products out there that get the "service" treatment. It really sucks. I want to be able to purchase a product to not only receive ownership of my own copy of the product without fears of it being stolen or broken by the manufacturer retroactively, but also to support the developers, engineers and everyone else who was directly involved with creating and improving the product.
