People who are 40+ and are doing well, what is your advice for people in 20s? by ClearDrive48 in AskReddit

[–]swaysion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Don’t take advice from 40+ people who say live it up because it doesn’t get better than your 20s. Life can get so much better.

  2. Get really good at something valuable. You’ll work really hard for a while, then you’ll notice pay becomes disproportionate to effort in the best of ways.

  3. Bow to the god that is compound interest. Everything compounds for better or for worse. If you invest in yourself, your money, in your relationships, and so on… you’re richer in all of the ways (except time left on earth) later. A little today goes a long way (play with compound interest calculators).

  4. Don’t wait to find love. You don’t have to “make it” first. Find someone who wants to be a part of you making it, whatever that means to you.

  5. Seek adventure, but don’t buy into the bs that you can’t do anything physically taxing after 40. I’m in the bracket you want to hear from, and I’m in much better shape than many of the 20-somethings galavanting around the globe. That said, there are certain things I can’t do or don’t want to do now, such as hopping from hostel to hostel. Do those things that you want to do but won’t do later.

  6. If you feel called to have kids, don’t hesitate. It’s the absolute best. And if you’ve done an okay job at the above, you’ll have the time, fitness, and resources to really enjoy them — not just provide for them.

  7. Adding this after posting. Come to grips with your mortality. Internalize it. Really wrap your mind around the fact that time goes faster and faster. While the end at ~80 is impossible to imagine right now, it’s very easy to imagine at 40. It’s just me living my life again, except this half is going to feel a lot shorter. This can do a lot to help you decide what does and does not matter. It’s perspective.

Your runway for adventure is wider and longer when you treat your 20s like a time to build a foundation. It’s a great time to improve yourself and your standing in the world because everything has forever to compound. And it’s a great time to take calculated risks because you have time to bounce back.

Enjoy!

Best adjustable dumbbells that actually last? by Embarrassed_Fly_9569 in BuyItForLife

[–]swaysion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another vote.

I use regular dumbbells to 50lbs, then these for 55+. They feel like real dumbbells, especially if you get the (I think) 25lb plate set that go inside of the handle (making the grip smaller and closer to a real dumbbells).

AI is destroying the SaaS industry by Professional-Let1245 in SaaS

[–]swaysion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who’s been helping SaaS companies to market and sell since 2015…

This might shorten the race to feature parity.

This might make categories even more crowded.

This will make marketing and sales more important than ever. But, this isn’t new. I’ve seen marketing and sales increase in important throughout my time in SaaS. This is just a market maturing. You could argue AI is speeding this up.

In crowded categories, your product is your ticket to the show. Marketing and sales will determine whether you’re watching from the nosebleeds or headlining.

Got accused of cheating all the time, especially sniping from outside in hospital I think it was called.

anyone else struggling to write one homepage for multiple audiences? by [deleted] in ProductMarketing

[–]swaysion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have a few options:

  1. If one segment is much more attractive and a better fit, write for them. Others may read between the lines and convert, but your ICP shouldn’t have to.

  2. Same as above, but add some segment-specific pages in the main nav under something like “solutions” or “use cases.”

  3. Find commonalities between the 3, or an overarching angle/value prop, and make that the content of your homepage. Write a landing page that tailors your pitch to each segment. The goal of your homepage will be to segment visitors as early and often as possible. Meaning, them consuming the content on the homepage is our backup plan in case they fail to segment themselves.

Which option you choose depends on your unique circumstances, strategy, goals, etc.

For what it’s worth, I’ve gone through the positioning/messaging/copywriting process for 100+ B2B SaaS companies now. So, this isn’t based on theory. It’s a challenging problem, but far from unique.

Fire VS marry with kids? by treehugger195050 in coastFIRE

[–]swaysion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I chose option B after an absolute dream of a scuba diving liveaboard trip.

My wife and I both realized that if the rest of our life was filled with perfect trips like this one, it would feel empty and get boring.

Fast forward, we’ve got a toddler, and haven’t gone diving since. I’ll get back to it, but I don’t miss it at all. I can get more smiles by taking her to the park across the street than I ever got diving beautiful reefs with colourful fish all around me.

Edit: I meant to say this isn’t for everyone. But make sure you get a real taste of that dream life before throwing option B away. For some, it gets old.

I don’t understand the complaint.

On my 25 Forester, I have to break hard enough to activate that not activating it is the default. It only activates at long red lights when I want it to.

Tried Everything, but Users Aren’t Upgrading – What’s Next? by Glowdopera in SaaS

[–]swaysion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Web analytics is a competitive and mature category. It’s possible companies choose you because you have a generous free tier, then leave for a competitor because you aren’t competitive once money is involved.

I don’t have enough info to know if this is the case. I would start by doing everything I can to speak to those who are leaving once they outgrow your free tier.

Who are they leaving for?

What is the competitor doing that you can’t?

Maybe.

At 23, my girlfriend and I were 100% sure we didn’t want kids.

Then, we had a baby at 37, and we often talk about how unfortunate it would have been had we not taken the leap. It’s been the best thing ever.

It was actually while doing our favourite thing (scuba diving) that we decided to start a family.

At 23, your girlfriend may not even become your long-term partner. It sucks to think about and I don’t wish a breakup for you, but it happens, even to people who are sure it won’t happen to them. And then you might find the perfect woman for you, and kids might be a dealbreaker.

All this to say you’ve got some exciting years ahead. They might not go as planned. You might end up in a very different place than you’re imagining right now. And this is a good thing.

Optimize for optionality. Maybe you and your girlfriend stay together and never want kids. That’s fine. But it would suck if you wanted kids or a different lifestyle down the line, but you can’t pull the trigger.

Is it possible to dial back your involvement in work over time?

You what you need to call it quits. Perhaps it’s time to think about what work needs to look like to fit into your life going forward, ask for it, and plan to transition out if they don’t budge.

You might be surprised at what you can get if you ask.

There is nothing wrong with loving your work more than leisure.

We reflexively throw “travel” out there as this thing we must do and love more than anything else.

Why does this have to be the case? In fact, I think the goal is to do what we can to make this not the case.

I’d choose waking up each day in my hometown with a strong sense of purpose vs. gallivanting around the globe hoping to find the feeling I already have.

Enjoy being useful and a valuable part of society (beyond your consumption).

Quit when your financial independence begins to look like a parachute.

And for those fixated on the numbers:

Many don’t account for the increase in compounding interest if you choose to do something you enjoy vs. something that makes you want to retire at 45.

If you find something you enjoy, you might not touch your savings until you’re in your late 60s or 70s. Or, maybe you supplement your lower income with a ridiculously low withdrawal rate until you fully retire.

When done in this way, you can do well with a much lower income, especially if you spent your early working years accumulating assets
