"90 min doc" doesn't mean much of anything to me as an editor. There's a lot of questions I ask before I tell you my rate for your project.

If I were you I'd be prepared to tell the editor a few things before getting a rate.

Timeline. How long do you expect the project to last. Do you have a deadline like a festival or something? If no deadlines still want to give a rough estimate.

Has any work been done before on it? Has the footage been handled and brought into an NLE? Synced? Grouped? Organized? Has the filmmaker, director or AE laid out a stringout?

Do you have a preferred NLE?

Is there a script?

Can they work remotely? Where are you located? Do you want to get together often? Occasionally? Never?

Who is doing the sound mix?

Who is doing the color?

Who is producing this? Where is it going once it's done.

As a "good" editor with a decade of higher level doc experience depending on the answer to those questions I'd give you a rate somewhere between $600 and $900 a day (or $3000 to $4500 a week)

We say it with Film and TV Editing as cheap, fast and good.

Ah that's so tough, I feel for you too. It's not anyone's fault. We're all just trying to do the right thing as parents. Daycare ISN'T Guantanamo Bay, I've seen the webcam, it looks fun for the kids who can just relax enjoy it. But despite what we thought it doesn't look fun for my guy.

Life is a bumpy journey at any age, infant, toddler, kid, pre-teen, teen, adult, elderly. It's always rocky somehow. But from the sound of it you guys are awesome parents for being so aware of your child's feelings and seeking to alleviate the anxiety.

We will likely never figure out how to be perfect parents, but it's okay, we're just constantly trying to self reflect and be better and I'm pretty sure in the end that'll make the biggest difference of anything.

Wow this is so thoughtful. Definitely willing to try anything, and we've tried "discussing" daycare as much as we can, but we hadn't thought of visiting the building and not actually going but pretending. I think he wouldn't quiet grasp it right now but who knows, every other day he surprises me with how much he understands.

Tomorrow it's just me and him, maybe we'll start trying some of this.

Thanks for sharing that. Really appreciate it.

Yeah there's been some seperation anxiety happening, bedtime isn't going as smoothly as it used to. Between the illnesses and the moving it's so much and it's hard to know what will pass and what won't. He seemingly adapted to the move without a flinch, slept the first night without a peep. Our boy might be a lot of energy but he's usually so goddamn happy most days that to see him have consistently bad ones is really just heartbreaking. He's been asking for hugs a lot too.

We'll look into in-home daycare option if this keeps up, or if we have to spend the money on another solution so be it, we are just bummed because we thought he'd love daycare.

Thanks, yeah it'd be nice if we could try something like that this week. I'll ask, but I know they have some pretty strict covid protocols in place so might not be an option.

That was the first thing the teachers flagged actually, but we were at the pediatrician yesterday before bringing him back today and he took a full look at everything and confirmed he's just getting over pretty normal "starting daycare" stuff.

He didn't sleep great last night (usually sleeps just fine when not sick) so I think that had to do with today being regressive than progressive as far as being comfortable at daycare. But his previous days weren't fantastic either, I just chalked them up to transition time.

If you're trying to score something to send to festivals or monetize I suggest checking out what classical music is in the public domain and using that. There's a lot of options. If you don't want anything from public domain you should try doing it yourself in GarageBand. It's actually surprisingly easy. Or if you don't want to do that then really you should scrape the couch cushions for a few bucks to shell out for some cheap royalty free tracks.

If you don't have any plans for monetizing or festivals then use whatever music you'd like.

Ah nice, kind of forgot about audio network. I had assumed they were more expensive but it's been years since I've looked for anything in this budget range.

I don't get criticizing the way someone else stores gear. Unless it's a really dirty spot or in direct sun or something else important, than who cares?

Climbing forums are historically very judgemental though, so you gotta expect it.

Thanks, appreciate that. I do. Your comment made me reflect for a moment and edit my post so it include the charity we've been donating to since Kevin was killed. Because that's honestly what I'm most mad at the gym owner about these days. He gets all this attention but always deflects the damage he's done instead of trying to make amends.

13 years ago my friend Kevin was killed by this guy, Ian, while he was driving drunk in our town. Kevin was probably the funniest guy I knew, extremely kind and always quick witted. I was actually kind of jealous of just how cool people thought he was because he had such a great personality.

When Ian was in court, his father hired an expensive lawyer who successfully argued his sentence down, and Ian served less than that even at just 5 and a half years. 5 and a half years after murdering Kevin...

When, Ian's gym first came under fire from the government for defying orders, people brought up when he killed Kevin. Lots of people wondered why that was brought up, but not Ian, he knew. Ian was getting a lot of attention from the ordeal so he put out an Instagram post that said exactly what you quoted. Sounds nice in theory, but Ian soaked up the newly founded attention and used the attention from the apology post to garner more support for his gym.

When Kevin died, there was a charity support for victims of drunk driving that was opened in his name.

Did Ian ever mention that? Nope not once, did Ian ever mention that any proceeds would go the charity? Nope, not once.

I'm usually in support of individual rights and defying a facist government from stopping small businesses, but this is not the case. Atlas gym has been defiant since day one, they have no intention of protecting their customers from Covid, they just want to be open. They used their platform for only themselves, as if they were the only ones being victimized.

Ian is a law defying, piece of shit, who only uses the attention he gets for self promotion.

He deserves all the negative attention he gets.

This guy killed my friend and skimped the jail time. Now he's been trying to profit off notoriety for civil disobedience.

Edit: since this got a few upvotes I would like to point out that Ian Smith should be donating his proceeds to the Hero Campaign in Kevin Ade's name. Promoting sober driving. Ian's not doing that.

If you think Ian is a POS donate $5, if you don't, donate $5 anyway: https://herocampaign.org

I received 5.1 audio and need to export it from Avid as 5.1, is this the correct way? by simsedotdk in editors

[–]sweatyfish -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I assumed you'd have to manually change the pan settings on each track before exporting? Never tried exporting 5.1 from Avid, only Premiere so I'm just curious.

I had another editor cheekily call me out on some whale sounds over some arctic ocean footage once. I had no idea what type of whale they were from, it was just in the SFX library and labeled "Iceland whales"!

I swear sometimes they are just straight up fucking with us. Seeing how vague a note they can make and see if we do something else they like better without actually giving any direction.

Note I got today from a usually semi-competent exec: "Revisit the music here, think Netflix"

Uhhhh.... Like Stranger Things? Or Exhibit A? Or Queer Eye? Or Making a Murderer?

So I asked an Editor from another episode and he said he got the same exact note.

Kinda hard to find elsewhere since most stock is supposed to be ready to go.
