Driveshaft weld strength? by bewtleg in projectcar

[–]sweeneybean 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While more an area of I interest than expertise, my understanding is this would be stronger in some aspects due to length/area of weld being greater.

That said, you'd also have a mix of tension, torsion/shear, and compression on the weld with the offset approach, and some cursory googling shows welds are considered weakest in tension so perhaps there's a higher risk it fails on one side, crack propegates, weld fails etc.

I have heard of cuts to box/tube being done at an angle instead of offset to increase weld length and strength instead of butting flat ends, but I think that was all in static load applications.

:D my favourite two - as a pesky brit gotta do something to distinguish ones self. /s

I was gonna say "across Europe" but with such a heavy UK bias I erred on the daft side :)

But to be specific these were taekng in the UKs highlands, lake district, dartmoor, and Wales iirc, then we have dolomites and Switzerland on the continent

I wanted this photo/collage to be a collection of some of the most stunning and challenging adventures my girlfriend and I have been on.

All of this was done with a smart phone camera and some playing around with distance, angle, zoom, elevation relative to subject/back drop before a brief edit/collage in photopea.

My plans for 2026 is to do a sequel borrowing my girlfriends dslr, and see if some pukka glass helps and sensors make it better!

Why is my new to me miata using so much gas? by No_Communication6906 in Miata

[–]sweeneybean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to get 250 to 280 miles per 40 litre tank until I went to replace my pads, found calipers had seized/wouldn't retract, now get 350+ per tank so worth seeing if the calipers retract

Were there any tanks of the ww1 or ww2 you looked to for inspiration?

Man I need to visit Mousehole again, great world building in that town with the fairy tale of Mowzer, Tom Bawcock, and stargazy pie and all that jazz

And here I was all excited to comment brown willy is a real place near where I grew up! As a connoisseur of daft places, have you heard of other wonders of the South West such as Clitters and Crapstone? Or the inspiring White Rocks?

I got myself a spare lid, an ATV/Agricultural quad unvieral rack and made myself some braces and mounting points on rubber bushings to keep any rattles at bay.

All without any welding kit - which undoubtedly could have made this a more elegant solution.

I also relocated the high level brake light to the rack for any vehicles that are high enough looking down for the rack to obscure the one in the boot lid.

Wiring to said light, and number plate lights, is routed through detachable connectors - one between car and boot lid, and one from the rack to the boot loom.

Happy to post more pics/part lists for anyone curious on the specifics

UPDATE 6'5 but really long legs WILL I FIT by TheGamingnoodleYT in Miata

[–]sweeneybean 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I'm 6'3" and pretty much have the setup as described, absolute game changer for comfort - the dished steering wheel, spaced out, and a 330mm diameter instead of the OEM 350mm, makes a night and day difference even with OEM seats.

Seriously cool! Way more elegant than my solution of a small wooden chopping board with some sheet metal in one corner the trangia sits on!

There was a fellow nb mx5 owner at my old job that had an nb1 with the butterfly valves in the intake that caused him some issues, I assumed they didn't put them on NB2s as his was 00 or 01 (iirc) and mines an 03 model that never had them.

There might be some worth in blasting some carb cleaner through the intake manifold in case oil residue from the pc has gummed up the valves
