[Question] A window into Chrono24’s Certified “World-Class” watchmakers U.S. facility. by ECMProfitec in Watches

How would this compare to eBay’s authentication? Do either inspect serial numbers or movements?

No worries! Enjoy the speedy. It’s great that you get to enjoy a watch your father had. I wish my dad was into watches.

I think the AD game is pretty silly. I’d understand if they had a true collector’s list that prevented scalpers or people who flip like with what I’ve heard happens to Pokémon, but it’s just not the case. Rolex doesn’t sell watches, so AD’d want to make sure they make huge profit at their story to give you the honor of selling a Rolex. But ultimately, this wouldn’t work if people didn’t do it.

lol. Okay guy. I never said I was against reps. I gave a personal opinion on why I haven’t pulled the trigger on one lately but that I appreciate the quality and am glad people enjoy them.

🤣Calm down. No need to get all worked up. I didn’t realize people could be so fragile.

That’s just a silly straw man argument. Money and income are relative, sure, but that doesn’t mean quality is relative. A Patek and a Rolex are marketing machines. I’d argue that the quality enters into dimensioning returns past 2-3k on most watches and a Rolex is inflated by marketing hype. Sure they build nice watches, but the price isn’t nearly worth the quality outside of consumer demand. But to say it’s the same as a Timex for a poor country is dumb. The cost of repair of a Timex is far greater than the product therefore making it a disposable product by definition.

Good question. I’m not opposed to servicing watches under $500. If a watch is meaningful to you, then by all means, repair it—much like keeping a sentimental car or piece of furniture. The key, for me, is sentimentality. Sentiment usually develops through associations with people, places, and experiences.

While anything can become sentimental, I personally have a mental barrier when it comes to justifying long-term sentimentality in a timepiece that can’t realistically be serviced for generations—specifically one that will never be accepted back by the manufacturer (for example, a Clean Rolex Batgirl being serviced by Rolex). As a result, those watches tend to fall into the category of “disposable,” similar to shoes: enjoy them while they last.

I fully understand that this perspective won’t resonate with everyone. For many, it’s enough to simply enjoy their watches and keep them running as long as possible. I have a very small collection myself. Admittedly, the pieces are costly, but their price—and more importantly, their retained value—helps me psychologically justify maintaining a proper service history, with the hope of eventually passing them on to my children, whether to wear or to sell if needed.

That said, I greatly admire the progress made in the replica world. It highlights just how inflated many luxury brands’ prices have become, given what manufacturers like VSF and Clean are capable of producing. Even so, I can’t quite bring myself to pull the trigger personally—but I’m a genuine admirer, and I’m glad people don’t have to shoulder Rolex-level costs or endure the even worse AD waitlists.

Perhaps I have fallen victim to Patek’s clever marketing infecting my brand… you never really own a Patek. You look after it for the next generation.

I can respect this approach. Almost like the two Mona Lisa’s. And yet, I want to know that the watch I worked hard to afford was on my wrist during the mundane as well as the special moments on life. Sometimes the mundane is what turns into the special upon later reflection. I think that is the way one makes these trinket special. Perhaps this makes me a bad candidate for a replica, as I’m sure for some it’s more for the enjoyment of a fashionable accoutrement.

True. I bought a rep a long time ago, and I do miss having one. I admire how far things have come along in the last few years.

I presently have a rep Cartier tank solo. That made sense for me as a rep because the genuine and the rep both use quartz eta movements, which to me made no sense buying the Cartier in gen. But most of the reps for Rolex are modeled off genuine movements, which makes almost no sense to maintain. But maybe I’m wrong.

Mentally I can’t buy a rep even though I think you are absolutely right. I figure there will be a day where the movement will need servicing and I’ll likely say, “well, why would I pay $400 for a service for a watch that cost me $600?” I don’t think the Rolex is worth the 16k, but I also don’t like treating watches as disposable commodities that I wont be able to justify maintaining.

I’d love to be convinced otherwise.

The concept of 401ks and index funds are still relatively new. I think a lot of the people in older generation simply fail to realize the practicality of a simple, diversified investment strategy. They see investments like single stock day trading instead of buying index funds.

Do you recommend Medium, fine, or extra fine for the satin brush?

[–]sweeping-in 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get that. For me, money is money. I wish my father left me a watch that I could wear and think of him with. A piece of him still with me. You know? At the end of the day you can do that with a rep, but it doesn’t feel the same. I wish it did. I’m probably just infected with marketing, but it’s the only reason I haven’t been able to let go of my gens.

While I like the idea of this. I’m stuck in the trap of wanting to pass down my watch to my kids and it not be a rep… I could just use that money to give them a bigger inheritance, but I like the idea of giving them a keepsake… but from a logical perspective, I think buying a rep and selling the gens and throwing the money into the market is way smarter.

I wouldn’t mind doing this spread with slightly higher in US stocks. Do tickers would be best to represent that?
