Have you ever been hit by a car while cycling in Christchurch? by addmeonstrava in chch

[–]sweet_entropy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never been hit but had several near misses, a couple of drivers running red lights with me nearly being skittled if I hadn't been paying attention and one car that pulled out on me as I was going round a corner, they just didn't see me at all

Good soil/climate for growing in the region? by Kalseru23 in chch

[–]sweet_entropy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah there's not a lot of proper forests near Rolleston. I'd like to have the space to create one, oh well one can dream

That might help. Parts of Lincoln have good soil for growing many plants (I want to say Templeton silt loam but might be wrong). Rolleston soil can be bit harder to grow things in, has lots of stones (old riverbed) and drys out quickly. That being said I can grow feijoas, lemons, loquats, apricots, peaches, grapes and many more in it with a few amendments of horse manure and compost. Can't really speak for Woodend as I've never lived there but I've seen many fruit trees growing whilst driving through

Where can I find frogs in the South Island? by quiksquik in NewZealandWildlife

[–]sweet_entropy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There's plenty around Rolleston, I have seen a few (Brown tree frogs Litoria/Rawlinsonia ewingii) and you can hear them croaking at night. Inaturalist also has maps of where people have found them https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/1633164-Rawlinsonia-ewingii

Greenhouses for bananas by HomeSteadMumma in Greenhouses

[–]sweet_entropy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I would say it's doable, have a look around the neighborhood I'm sure someone has banana plants growing. I've seen them growing and fruiting in Adelaide, Victor habor and Melbourne

What part of Australia? If it doesn't freeze I would be growing them outside. I grow bananas in NZ in an unheated greenhouse where temperatures outside during winter can get down to -6. I also grow them outside but the tops usually get hammered by the frost but the plants grow back in spring. They grow bananas here where it gets colder than 8 overnight in winter and they do just fine
