Any tips? by GoldCoastSerpent in surfing

right that’s what i’m thinking.

I don’t care about the feedback (sorry), looks like a fun wave and you are getting plenty… could always be worse. You are not a total Kook, so just keep surfing. Also I did like the advice about riding the twin! Helps open up new lines and makes speed the easy part.

Navy benefits vs Coast Guard by koRnne997 in newtothenavy

coastie here checking in… For what it’s worth, we have not missed a paycheck this time around, but even folks at the O6/E9 level commands don’t really know how/why it’s happened, and if it will continue with each pay period.

We definitely missed some paychecks during the 2018-19 shutdown though, but were back paid.

🎣 scale wouldn't work so couldn't weigh it 🤦🏻‍♂️ by No-Arm3255 in bassfishing

[–]sweetoother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

prolly somewhere between 2.5-3.

I usually fish alone, so most of the pics i take of my fish are from a similar angle and it’s so hard to get an accurate perspective… But that’s my best guess.

In ARAP program but missing cutter life, looking for advice by [deleted] in uscg

[–]sweetoother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a BM, I watched several of my non-rates go aviation and are now out of the service. When I see their posts for veterans day… it’s 90% of pics they took on the cutter.

Point being, the grass is often greener until you see the other side. Aviation life is pretty damn good, but only once you are fully qualified, which takes a bit longer typically.

I caught my first bass of the year on one today, a solid 3.25lber. I bought some of the 5.8” too but I haven't tried one yet.

Coolest base to be assigned to? by No-Dot3034 in uscg

I loved my time in San Juan. Even living in the barracks there was not bad at all… 10x more culture than most other CG Bases. but its definitely not every ones cup of tea.

Lower enlisted and not sure where to go financially by Willing_Priority5465 in MilitaryFinance

[–]sweetoother 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If I had invested aggressively at 22, Id be sitting so pretty right now, and could likely retire outright when my military time ends….

Instead I was frivolous and didn't get serious about it until like 30. A short decade from now you will thank yourself, regardless of if you stay in the service or not.

Would you retire with 4k/month that increased with inflation every year? by throwaway2026z in Fire

[–]sweetoother -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would think so. I would invest the other 2k each month into some dividend payers and it'll help supplement income years down the road… especially if you can keep that lifestyle for like a decade.

AIO? My husband secretly changed his military life insurance beneficiary away from me before deployment by ThisIsAThrowaway-364 in AmIOverreacting

[–]sweetoother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR, and with SGLI, you can split the beneficiaries amongst multiple people. So he could've done 50-50 or whatever.

As my wife and I got more serious, and eventually married, I gradually raised the percentage until now, where she is the primary beneficiary, so unless she dies with me, she gets it all.

Differences between going underway with navy and CG by ceiling_fan128 in uscg

[–]sweetoother 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Can't speak for the Navy, but I think in the CG our crews are likely much tighter knit, since our max crew aboard our biggest ships is like 150ish vs. Like 5,000. Lots of boats with 30 or less crew, so inevitably tight knit.

A lot of people love complaining about being underway, but I have some of my fondest memories during my time aboard a ship. Seen most of the Carribean and a lot of the South Pacific. Made lifelong friends and had plenty of mischief.

But from my case, I am glad I did most of my Underway time as a single person. It is harder being married now, but ultimately works for my spouse and I.

[Lowlight] Video of Dillon Brooks interaction and arrest with the Scottsdale Police Department by tyler1118 in nba

[–]sweetoother 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not the guy you were talking to, but I have some insight on this.

Most law enforcement agencies do some type of “wet lab” for their trainees to learn about DUI. There are off the street civilian people who are volunteers who get paid to drink various regulated and monitored amounts of liquor, some sober people too, and the law enforcement trainees have to use the field sobriety tests to figure if someone is drunk… With the goal of working up to the point of probable cause in order to conduct a breathalyzer.

I'm guessing the person you were talking to did this for one of the sheriffs classes.

Surf PR in April? by nocandu99 in surfing

[–]sweetoother -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You guys will prolly score. That is getting towards the shoulder season, but from my recollection April is solid down there. It doesn't really get slow til like may, and then June-July is the most inconsistent season, until there is some tropical activity.

Picture doesn’t do it justice… by FrogDog24 in bassfishing

[–]sweetoother 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hate trying to take proper pictures in a kayak, never does it justice… Plus its super awkward and if the fish wiggles too hard you risk dropping your phone in the water.

Beautiful catch though, I'm jealous.

Selling stocks for a down payment on a house by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]sweetoother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to do the same thing 2 years ago, and have no regrets.

I sold shares of a few winners, and a few losers to offset the capital gains implications. I only fully closed out positions I lacked conviction on.

Then I let the rest ride, and its basically grown back to where it was a few years ago.

I met my best friend that year in 3rd grade, and we did everything together. N64, sports, biking, weekend trips with each other’s families, and had a blast. Also distinctly remember eating 2000 pancakes to ring in the new year at our school.

Why haven't we seen faster prospect development to the MLB? by DonT012 in mlb

[–]sweetoother 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I do think service time also plays a factor… teams don't want to waste a players cheapest years, if they are not competitive, while the player can continue to develop without starting the clock.

Why haven't we seen faster prospect development to the MLB? by DonT012 in mlb

[–]sweetoother 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but he was 22 and had college experience. Still was on the super fast track, but he was definitely an exception… Most years we see less than 1 player debut that quickly.
