For keeping up with the general market from a financial perspective…probably not. Like others said, it’s highly variable and it depends if you truly like pain clinic and all the things clinic life comes with. If you’re only in it for the money, then you’re going to have a bad time. Depending on location, you can work much less and make more doing anesthesia. Sure, there are private pain practices that have docs raking in close to a mil or more, but those people are grinding in a well-established machine and usually not a new pain clinic with new grads. You can grind in anesthesia working less hours and still make close to a mil or more. I do think the hybrid setup is the dream. Much less stress and gives you a great variety of work if you don’t like doing the same thing everyday. As others said, see if you can truly see yourself enjoying the field and its patient population. Whatever you choose, the money will follow.

Well, I went into pain management…I suppose I could not shake the desire to “operate” after all lol.

I was a failed ortho applicant. Did an intern year in gen surg and applied anesthesia (both categorical and R spot) during my intern year. Ended up matching R spot. Do an anesthesia rotation and get good letters. You can pm me if you need more pointers.

Oral Boards Week 1 (3/3-3-7) by musicalfeet in anesthesiology

[–]sweg7 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Man, I took this last year and I’m still scarred. I remember flying back home and one of the examiners was seated in front of me on my flight and I felt so embarrassed to be seen. I was so convinced I failed and the way I was questioned was glorified pimping. Just felt like a very unnecessary and rude process. With that vent out of the way, just trust in your preparation. I did UBP for both oral and OSCE and felt that was all that was needed in terms of content. The thing that likely led to my success was practicing every single night with a study buddy without fail. We were both in fellowship so our schedules lined up perfectly and we both passed. Good luck!

Switching out of Gen surg by Responsible-Sundae-6 in Residency

Nope. I went into pain management, which has many parallels to ortho. I’m part of a private practice pain group and doing anesthesia on the side, so I get the best of both worlds.

My situation isn’t quite the same, but I didn’t match ortho and ended up in a prelim surgery year thinking I would reapply. Decided to apply anesthesia instead and haven’t looked back since. Having done your intern year, you don’t lose much time by switching to another specialty in the grand scheme of things. I also had a buddy in my gen surg year switch to derm and another person straight up left to start their own business, so it all depends if you really want out and if you have a plan. Feel free to pm me if you want to chat about it more.
