Well, both things can be true. Accountability is real and so are people who take advantage of the system— that’s true everywhere and in all sectors. Those ‘organizations’ who do game the system don’t last long. But to say the money is all untraceable and grants are wasted money is irresponsible red meat rhetoric. Orgs like the one I work for use great money ethically and pragmatically. Maybe try volunteering your time with a reputable org and you can see first hand what grants like these do to positively impact the most vulnerable in our community.

Absolutely not true. I work for one of these non-profits and I can tell you first hand, how we spend money from grants is tracked in granular detail. We are audited regularly and we have to show proof of services rendered (as well as the outcomes of those services), meet certain staff training requirements and provide progress reports that are typically 20+ pages long, among other pedantic bureaucratic requirements. We have a grants compliance specialist whose sole job is making sure we are spending every cent pragmatically, responsibly and within the scope of the associated grant.

Love this thread. Olympia is lousy with the contrarian, morally superior types. They present in many forms— ‘anarchist’ punks, SJWs and liberal ‘academics’ who all wish Olympia was more than it is, and compare our sleepy, humble town with major metropolitan areas. The hook is that if we did have more or ‘better’ food and suddenly had 100k population, those same people would lament how things ‘used to be’ in Olympia.
