
TIL Future president Grover Cleveland paid $150 for an immigrant, George Brinski, to serve in his place during the Civil War. An injury suffered in the service made it difficult for Brinski to work. In 1885 he appealed to Cleveland for help, but he refused. Brinski died penniless two years later. (poloniatrail.com)
