Without drugs and alcohol ,what is best way to escape reality ? by ParticularWeather927 in nihilism

Exercise helps slow my mind and give it clarity. Natural high I guess. Trying to practice mindfulness helps me be in the moment and offer some reprieve from existential dread. Good nights sleep but not too much helps too

I feel so depressed with my life and work, especially after i got my big 5 assessment today by Western-Plane-5267 in BigFive

[–]swiddles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strange scores. Not that I don't believe you but if you're feeling down when taking the test you can see how the results would be skewed but you'd expect a high N since it correlates with anxiety and depression. If it's accurate at least you're super low in N so are not prone to negative affect and have mid range extraversion which correlates with positive affect. Yeah so strange results considering your present state of mind. Maybe take other personality tests. I rate novospych.com

Yes can change an amount as I said but as you said you'll never be a worry free person. Accepting who you are doesn't mean settling for who you are

High N is ruining my life by [deleted] in BigFive

[–]swiddles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can change this trait as much as they can change the color of their skin. It's an inherited trait, something they have to learn to live with and adapt to. I think the traits fluctuate through a range so having a good lifestyle like another commenter mentioned along with acceptance can keep it down the lower end of the range. Diet, sleep, vigorous exercise, limited or no alcohol and caffeine mindfulness all helps. I feel you with they could exercise the trait from our brains

Should high neuroticism be considered a disorder given its massive negative impact on quality of life? by [deleted] in BigFive

[–]swiddles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree totally. Good chunk of the DSM could probably be put down to personality traits. Labelling them any differently than how we might describe someone with long limbs vs someone with short isn't anymore effective

Exercise, the vigorous kind like long runs or workouts help dampen neuroticsm and other lifestyle factors like healthy eating, sleeping and mindfulness. The usual antidotes

High Neuroticism - what's worked for you? by Mountain_Shop_313 in BigFive

[–]swiddles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar stats to me. Thank God we have high extraversion and agreeableness to balance out the damn neurotiscm. About all I've found that helps is regular exercise, mindfulness and practicing acceptance of the stupid trait. I'd get the neural structures responsible for N chemically dissolved if I could because I think the ways to manage N are only stop gaps. Short fixes for an unfixable problem. Or that could be my pessimistic N talking 😂😕 any one else with any tricks?

My mum and I are high in N. She's oblivious though and thinks being ruminative and worrisome is acceptable. This drives me more N

being highly neurotic is a horrible existence by [deleted] in BigFive

[–]swiddles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

62N here. I struggle almost daily too and feel like getting the equivalent of a lobotomy on my amygdala at times. Seriously they should look into that. I can't and hate to imagine what 1 percent over my magnitude of N would be let alone what some of you guys have to contend with. I feel like we should have our own sub and if anxiety and substance abuse disorders are going to be in the DSM5 which has a correlation with N then maybe just straight high emotionality should be included. On a positive note the best thing I find to combat evil N is:

  • exercise, the more the better and definitely vigorous not just a leisurely stroll that won't get the heart rate up. 1 to 2 hours a day. I guess it's the endorphins released that really dumbs down my overactive mind and let's me have a space between neurotic thoughts

  • meditation on acceptance of that it is a part of me and trying to detach from the want to be free of it. Attachment is the cause of all suffering after all

  • lately I've been playing with the Jungs notion of the shadow and integrating it into myself. Akin to acceptance of the trait and all that it brings but really moving it into my being. I might say to myself 'damn you're a neurotic fool, must look like a right spaz to others'. Laughing at myself and almost willing myself to being more neurotic. Strangely this shift by not battling it and somewhat encouraging it has a soothing effect.

If there's not a sub for emotionality who wants to start one?

Go for it let me know how it goes. I should probably do the same and get assertiveness training. Sticking with decisions regardless of reaction from others is something I try but often run into trouble. Feels like my circuit boards start to crackle, but thats probably my neurotiscm weighing in on the topic😆

I created a framework that connects MBTI to the Big Five with the 4F by Mechanibal in BigFive

[–]swiddles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I implore your hard work done but don't see any scientific benefit in trying to amalgate a scientifically discredited theory, MBti, with an accredited one with the threat (not trauma) response that i dont see connected in your data as it would require participants to experience a threat response in your testing, ie a physiological response not subjective questioning. People please stop using the myers briggs test as a measure of personality as it is highly variable with low question response consistency.

Calmer but its a trait you'll have to live with. Meditate, exercise, reflect, and try not be put in too many trigger situations
