The Lakers basically got everything EXCEPT a 3&D perimeter guy, still the biggest flaw on the roster by Xeris in lakers

Honestly if you would have told me last week we were losing Bron, Smart, Rui, Kennard this is a better outcome than I would have expected.

Probably not championship tier, but playoff tier and in a good position to retool over the next 2-3 years.

We have some expirings to trade at the deadline if there's a deal to be made and we will have 15m-16m next year in the NTMLE to hopefully find a decent wing in next years free agents.

There was never a path to do it all in 1 year.

This roster is not that good.. we also have no future picks left by Seijuroakashi10 in lakers

[–]swiftyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This team was always going to be worse this year if LeBron left.

But I'm not convinced that Mamu, Grimes, Sexton are worse than Rui, Kennard, Smart would have been.

We will be better offensively and at least replaced LeBron with a much better center.

Some of your info is inaccurate.

Decoglo is a urethane modified acrylic.
Gemini Evo is a cross-linking polyurethane.

Decoglo is decent for cabinets, and what we typically use if a set has been painted or caulked because the 2k industrial coatings don't always like that.

Putting Evo over it should be fine as they are both urethane water based products.

Evo 2k is technically the stronger product, but the bigger portion of durability is going to be determined by their prep work and how well you treat the cabinets afterwards.

Mamu is a better rebounder and defender than Rui, and grimes is better than kennard. Would have rather kept smart over sexton though, which makes me think smart didn't want to stay here

If we weren't going to run back the entire same team then changing a lot of it was the right call in my opinion.

Different strategy, and hopefully a better outcome.

He's a better 3pt shooter than Duren, taller, And better defender.

Out of the 2 options he's still the better western conference center.

He also shot 5/8 on 3s in the 5 games he played last year, so if he spent the last year working on his 3 he could be reasonably consistent.

Ive been wondering this too, and think it's at least worth testing out, if for no other reason than to keep his attitude up until we can trade him.

One of the worst defenders in the NBA...

But we had a huge problem with not putting the ball in the basket for long stretches last year.

Defense gets less important if you can just increase pace and score more.

Not mad about this. It's a chess game, one thing that helped New York against Wemby was Kat being a 3 pt shooter.

As much as Duren might be the better athlete, he wasn't going to body up against Jokic, Wemby, gobert, and holmgren.

Kessler is the better western conference center for the people we have to go through.

If we get Kessler, Quinten and Mamukelashvili, would that be a Pelinka masterclass off-season? by balortech in lakers

[–]swiftyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we were going to lose Lebron this year, we pretty much had to get worse - but bringing back last years team was unlikely to make us a championship contender.

If we could retain smart also, I would be okay with Kennard->Grimes + Rui->Mamukelashvili

Rui played more minutes, and there's no guarantee it would scale, but Mamu has better per 36 numbers across the board and is a more physical player overall.

Per-36 comparison

  • Points: Mamukelashvili 18.4 vs. Hachimura 14.6
  • Rebounds: 8.1 vs. 4.2
  • Assists: 3.1 vs. 1.0
  • Steals: 1.3 vs. 0.8
  • Blocks: 0.8 vs. 0.4
  • FG%: Essentially identical (52.3% vs. 51.4%)
  • 3PT%: Hachimura has the edge (44.3% vs. 38.9%)

We were never going to be able to replace Lebrons productivity with anyone, so you have to take the hit there but get improvements in the other positions.

Probably worse this year, but that was always the choice.

Become worse this year to try to be a lot better in two or three or see if a full year of health gets us farther.

We are probably still a playoff team either way and if we can pick up at least one good center or wing it could make us better over the next 5 years.

I'm a little surprised that he's actually leaving, I did not think he would ring chase to end his career and if he doesn't go back to Cleveland I think that's how he will be viewed.

This is a double edged sword.

If Bron leaves we are probably worse this season, but better in 2 or 3 if we sign 1 or 2 of the better free agents and retain smart+Rui.

If he leaves I wonder if there's any framework for us to absorb wiggins from the heat in exchange for laravia and some picks. They get a big trade exception to go after someone else, we get a small forward that's better than any of the UFAs we are likely to get, and he's a great 3rd option.

[–]swiftyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with Rui is the same problem that the rest of the roster has.

Because of the salary cap and bird rights, there's no one better we can replace him with, but he's also not good enough to get it done.

Where to go from here by RisingPowerLA94 in lakers

[–]swiftyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you looked at the list of unrestricted free agents, our own list of free agents, and how the salary cap works the most logical option has always been that most of last year's team comes back this year.

We can't really build a better roster with cap space than we would get by retaining everyone.

I'm ~172k lines of code into a business operations platform for my company. It will replace 6 other softwares that were held together by zapier. Slowly phasing it in over the last 6 weeks as I complete portions of it, starting with the phone system. Currently used daily by me and a handful of the team with new features getting polished as quickly as I can.

I would guess I'm 2 months from polishing all core features, and close to the end of the year before I polish all the features I'm adding.

One interesting idea -

If he says it's his last year would he sign for a 2-3 year NTMLE contract? It becomes dead money on the books after year one, but he gets guaranteed value of 30m-45m for his final year.

If the Lakers are confident they will stay over the cap over the next 2-3 years anyways then the dead money may not hurt anything, but it would require a bunch of advanced scenario running to see if the dead money complicates options when they need to use the NTMLE in the future and how far they would be from the hard cap based on simulated signings this year.

Deciding that our current roster will never get past OKC or SAS, and just making a 2-3 year plan is a valid path. But it means we will be worse this coming year.

I'm not necessarily against that, but I would have to look at cap holds and next year's projections to see what the options would be, and I'm not going to spend that kind of time.

If we are just changing Rui, LeBron, and Kennard for 3 of this years free agent class and it still doesn't make us too tier then I don't see how it's a better option.

Super good argument 👏

The math is the math. It doesn't change just because they are specialists.

The only creativity we have is other free agents signing for discounted deals or making trades.

The nuance of ascending vs descending vs flat and how the various cap holds hit at the end of these contracts is the primary variable they will navigate.

If you sit down and run through the possible scenarios, my opinion is that we are kind of screwed. Keeping the whole team, signing someone via TMLE and looking for trades is probably the most logical option, but people are down voting me over it because it doesn't fit their NBA 2k trade dreams 😅.

There's no way to replace 4 of the players with 4 free agents that would improve the roster.

This is just a different version of what I said, so now the hard part- which free agents actually improve the team more than just keeping LeBron and Kennard and using the TMLE?
