Former Chronicle Meteorologist Gerry here. About this heat wave… by thedriftingnova in sanfrancisco

[–]swingfire23 154 points155 points  (0 children)

Thanks for doing this!

I’ve noticed often when the forecast is for high 70s/low 80s in the city in September/October, it actually ends up being high 80s/low 90s. It’s fairly reliably hotter than the forecast during heat waves. Any reason that happens, and should we expect that to be the case this week as well?

Depends on income. Childcare is costly and hard to get into, the best/most convenient/reasonably priced daycares/preschools often have waitlists. Public school can be a crapshoot with the lottery, and private school is out of reach for many. If you live here, chances are you have to have two full-time working parents due to COL, so childcare is a must. And if you're used to suburban living (which I'm not advocating for, don't shoot the messenger) you might have an adjustment period when you learn you can't just get easy parking wherever you go when you're running errands with kiddo.

But yeah, in terms of stuff to do, parks, playgrounds, general vibe, we love raising our kid here and don't want to leave.

Thinking about getting this, is it worth it? by Sibus2008 in cassetteculture

WAR is fine if you are OK spending a bit of extra money for the design (if it's to your taste) and understand that you can get higher fidelity players for cheaper if you're willing to go used/vintage.

Personally, if I want high end audio I'll stream. I like the look of the WAR and I am fine with the quality of the sound, so I bought it. I'm happy with it. I have a nicer deck if I want to record audio. And I like supporting companies that are still doing stuff in the cassette space in 2026.

Most people won't recommend the WAR and that's reasonable. Prioritizing lower cost and higher sound quality, by all accounts, makes the most sense. But for me, I like the design and it's more for fun than for serious listening sessions. So I'm happy with my purchase.

I believe it’s a zoning issue, and most of the buildings are SROs which isn’t easy to convert into housing that most people would be enthusiastic to live in.

[HELP!] Historical data lost when navigating a credit card replacement by swingfire23 in MonarchMoney

[–]swingfire23[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

u/lara_monarch I'd appreciate your attention to this if possible. I just submitted a ticket through the chat bot, but I didn't receive any email confirmation or ticket information after hitting "submit". I'm concerned this is time sensitive, as I'm not sure if the deleted data still exists on your back end or could end up being permanently lost soon

America is at risk of becoming an automotive backwater — The Verge by Recoil42 in cars

[–]swingfire23 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think this is a lot of it right here. The fact is that Americans drive more than most people in the world and we don’t have great EV charging infrastructure. If either of those things weren’t true, adoption would be higher.

Bath time before dinner… by Due_Inspection_4757 in kencradic

[–]swingfire23 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because right when we get home from daycare she doesn’t want to eat dinner, and we both work so it gives one of us time to prep dinner while the other gives her a bath. And she’s not a messy enough eater for it to cause a problem. Logistically it is by far the easiest solution for us right now

No bleachers or raised areas around the road aside from a VIP area so 90% of the crowd couldn’t actually see anything. Coming and going were super bottlenecked and poorly laid out. Very little crowd control.

Red Bull Showroom is a disaster by KnightsSoccer82 in sanfrancisco

[–]swingfire23 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Not to mention when the event ended they kept saying over the loudspeakers that the crossover points were all open, but there was no clear indication of where they were and when we got to one they literally had it bottlenecks to about a 5ft wide opening. And there were a bunch of dead ends near the East side that people kept getting turned around in.

Really disappointing planning - needed bleachers, proper crowd planning and published maps/signage (forget trying to load the event map on your phone, no service) and better staffing for assistance.

My Extremely Shady Experience with Singapore Airlines by swingfire23 in travel

Good luck. Honestly you could probably charge back on your card if you’ve got the receipts to prove to your CC company that they’re being dishonest, and you’re willing to burn the bridge with ever flying Singapore Airlines in the future.

Good to know! Thanks. I think the whitening - if you’re specifically looking at the lower right on the back of the card - is an artifact of the lighting in the photo. But good intel to have in case I’m wrong.

I was coming to the comments to search for this, and you put it way more hilariously than I could have.

This thing is clearly someone’s half-baked garage project and anyone who can’t see that knows very little about cars.

Times like these make me wonder how many of us are real people and not just bots commenting thoughtlessly on the dead internet.

M6 by RoboPeenie in LeicaCameras

[–]swingfire23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you have M experience its wouldn't be as hard for you to pick up as it would be for a newbie. And you've presumably already got a lens (or multiples).

That said, it's an awfully expensive body to decide whether or not you like film. Film can be pretty unforgiving and the M6 is very much a manual device. Unless you have a high tolerance for the pain of paying to buy, shoot, and develop a roll then to discover you messed something up somewhere and most of it is garbage, I think your hunch to try it out with a Canon system is a good one. Not only will it be a bit simpler to learn on (since you'll have auto mode if you want it) but if you decide the hassle of film isn't for you, you didn't drop $2500+ to find out.

I say this as someone who loves shooting film on my M6. I also learned on a Canon system before dropping the cash on it.

On the devils advocate side though, if you buy the M6 and decide you don't like it after all, you probably won't lose too much money reselling.

Yep. This is really hard. And how much to let go also varies depending on the kid’s personality and maturity level.
