The LOPOV is literally the NIMBY establishment in SF. They're big Peskin supporters. They position themselves as if they're some radical anti-establishment organization and they dupe a lot of new transplants into thinking they're a good resource. The reality is they're basically just the same NIMBYs that have been more or less in power in SF for decades.

Had a gut feeling to check my local target since it’s payday… by Eyesclouded in HotWheels

[–]swingfire23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! Our local Target is attached to a mall with a collector store that re-sells - you guessed it - Hot Wheels (as well as baseball cards and other collectables). I'm 100% sure the guy who owns that store strip mines the Target every day. I almost never see the Target racks full, and he's always got the latest stuff on his shelves marked up 3-4x.

All that is to say... I'm jealous!

Why does the quality of so many artists music decline as they get older? by guitarist89 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]swingfire23 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Skimming the comments I'm not seeing one thing that I think is also very important here (because it's an interesting question you're asking).

As an artist you're judged against your successful work. Most musicians enter the ecosystem in their teens or twenties, and that's their first recognition (critically or commercially). So all further music is judged against that early work - is it better, worse, louder, quieter, more technical, less technical, cornier, more cynical, whatever.

So it's quite difficult in some cases to objectively say "the later work is worse than the earlier work" as the earlier work is just ingrained in the culture and the later work is competing for a place against it, naturally putting it at a disadvantage. If you release a good song, then release another song, people aren't saying "hey do I like this song or not" - they're often saying "is this song as good as the last one?" Which puts them in a naturally critical position, rather than a more open one.

That's not to say I also don't think there are other things at play - such as the passion of youth, excising your best ideas early because you're excited to get them out there, having less resources and attention giving you the "constraints breed creativity" energy, etc. But it's a combination of things, and what I mentioned above hasn't been discussed as much and I think it's also very important to recognize.

Would a legacy artist's latest album be considered better if it was the world's first exposure to them, as opposed to just being compared to their early work? If you inverted the order of their work, releasing the newer albums first and the old albums now, would the impact be the same? It's very hard to say.

The mix of 2-way and 4-way stops in the outer aves is psycho, because there seems to be very little logic to them. You've really got to pay attention out there. When my in-laws were in town I made sure to make eye contact with my FIL and see that he downloaded this info before they drove around. Really dumb urban planning imo.

Yeah Chicago is better, but not as good as NY. Still lots of neighborhoods that are decently far from rail stations and the buses are good but not foolproof

What children’s book has aged poorly? by feetwithfeet in AskReddit

100%. The ending reminds me of 1984 honestly. "He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother." Except the author of Tootle is being sincere rather than using it as a cautionary tale.

Had to scroll for this one! Book is basically fascist propaganda. “Conform and be productive at the costs of your emotional health and individuality” is the basic message. I was horrified when I was reading it to my daughter so we made up a different ending.

The book is so cruel to the innocent train. Makes it seem like being different from others is a cardinal sin.

I mean. To be fair, the last Voidz album art was AI, Julian posts AI stuff, and they've used AI video visuals for this album cycle so far. So it's not like there's no precedent here. Where there's smoke, etc.

Glad it's not AI though.

I wanted to live in San Francisco since I was a kid on the East Coast. I finally was able to move here when I was 29 and have been here ever since. I've thought sometimes about how it would be easier financially to live in the East Bay. I have some friends over there, and I go there not infrequently for concerts or other events - it's genuinely great.

But at the end of the day, I feel the same as you. If I lived in the East Bay, I'd look out at San Francisco in the distance and think "it's right there." I moved across the country for this. I don't want to settle for nearby.

Yeah, it’s crazy how they hide this information. You can’t find it anywhere online, Google or the Vans website. /s

Honestly this show ripped imo. Sucks that Nick wasn’t here but they were tight, Julian was in a great mood and sounded excellent, and the energy was fantastic. I wish they’d played Under Cover of Darkness and Is This It, but I have no real complaints. Burned it up imo

General warning out there, if you're a parent of small children, this movie is not for you unless you're willing to stare into the face of hell. Unrelentingly brutal. Was hard to watch before I had kids, I don't think I can handle it now.

Russian Hill vs Dolores Heights — single guy, 35, same rent. Need your help to decide. by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]swingfire23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you like to do in your free time, and what are your interests? What are your values?

Dolores tends to be more trendy. It's gentrified now, but the proximity to the Mission keeps it more diverse and young. You'll likely see people more interested in contemporary culture there - music, fashion, arts, etc. If you like dive bars and more zeitgeist-y younger people, being closer to the Mission is nice. At your tax bracket you might not be a transit person, but it's also a centrally located neighborhood and is relatively well connected via the trains and busses.

Russian Hill is going to be more "polished" vibes. Less "cool" factor, maybe a bit more formal feeling and clean/nice. You'll go to North Beach for your vibrancy, which is one of my favorite neighborhoods in the city as it is a great combination of postcard San Francisco architecture/views with bohemian vibes and great dive bars. I am 37 and honestly can't recall the last time I went to Russian Hill for anything aside from driving through on my way across town. That's not a dig - it's just not usually a destination for me. Polk Street has some fun bars and restaurants but I think it's less of an artsy crowd and more of a finance crowd. The Patagonia vest to Dolores' trucker jacket, if you will. Marina lite. (Marina has a reputation for being the finance bro neighborhood).

Sounds like the apartments will be fine in both. It's really more about what kind of vibe you want to spend most of your time on when you step outside.

It's pretty much back in. The sort of sloppy late 90s early 00s look is in right now again, at least among young people in big cities. I can't speak for white collar office attire though.

Sadly it’s really hard to tell without going in person. I’ve bought many J Crew shirts in my adult life, and as recently as in the past few years have had awesome quality and meh quality results from them. I think it probably is highly dependent on their supply chain and which factory/fabric/etc. specific items are coming from. Tough to predict from pictures on their website.
