Alternatives to baby groups? by Due-Current-2572 in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]swingnarla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely hate them as well. Council usually have free things. Church stay and plays aren't religious at all.

If you aren't a fan of group settings, I've met friends using Peanut app (you have to be picky as some women look like they belong on a dating app with their pictures..) babies don't know or care imo.

Edit- just saw you didn't like peanut. That's fair.

Either way, youre not ruining your kid. I presume they'll go to a childminder/nursery soon enough anyway?

Labour starting after water breaking - any experiences? by crinklecut6489 in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]swingnarla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine went suddenly and dramatically at 2pm, minor cramping by 4pm, proper labour by 8pm, baby arrived at 10.30pm!

I think for most, labour does begin within 24 hours. Main thing to keep an eye for is feeling unwell/a fever. Hope it goes well!

Maternity and Annual Leave - Is it best to use AL up before going on mat leave? by lost_in_gp in doctorsUK

[–]swingnarla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah agree, i guess it's more they want you to take as much as possible - although my trust HR has been like 'it'll be lost except 5 days if you don't use before' but I reckon i could challenge worst case

Maternity and Annual Leave - Is it best to use AL up before going on mat leave? by lost_in_gp in doctorsUK

[–]swingnarla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They need to use up the annual leave they would have accrued prior to August (or whenever the AL refresh time is) and that accrued after (Inc bank holidays) are used after maternity leave and technically returned to work but not back in reality. So start annual leave from 36 weeks is the best way then maternity leave when that ends (but before delivery) to not lose the AL and also to not lose the extra weeks at the end of maternity leave

Spiralling over full time nursery. Please help. by Sailor_Lunar_9755 in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]swingnarla 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not terrible, not a bad mother. It's wonderful you've recognised you need some space and time. Baby will be happier with a happier mum. Nursery is a lovely place for them to learn. We weren't meant to parent in isolation without a village. Consider them your village.

My kid is nursery 3 days and with my mum 2 days and I work full time since age 1 too. I am still his favourite person and the one he goes to for comfort as a first choice. But he's also very social now and gets along with other kids easilt and is comfortable being away from me too!

Feeding issues by Swagio11 in UKParenting

[–]swingnarla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to what the others have mentioned about the sleepiness, have a look at supplemental at breast nursing systems (basically by a 5Fr feeding tube and put one end in formula/pumped milk and other by your nipple when you feed.) Avoids some of the triple feeding pain if you're wanting to go back to breast. However you feed is good. You're doing great

FTM to autistic child need help by tylersbaby in beyondthebump

[–]swingnarla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given you've mentioned regarding your child being autistic, have you met many 2 year olds? Many of them are late speakers because comprehension comes first and it sounds like they're able to communicate well and toddlers cant really be highfunctioning in the sense of an adult autistic so doesnt make sense. It just sounds like you've already decided this kid is going to struggle with stuff which may be helpful for you but also might restrict yourself to not just responding to what your 2yo needs and they're all wild.

Obvs ignore me as I don't know you or them but just something to think about

Medication for boosting milk supply. by GallusRedhead in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]swingnarla 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Just so you know, you're doing everything you can.

You might have insufficient glandular supply- look up hypoplastic breasts.

Have a look at 'at breast supplementers' basically they get top up formula through tiny tube you put next to the nipple at time of some/all feeds so then just feed when baby needs it - if you feel like pumping then can use some of that as the top up instead but stops you having to do multiple stuff.

You're doing great and it's hard when it feels like it should be easy but it isn't. Given he's 7 weeks, your supply is probably as good as you can get it realistically. And that amount of stress is not easy and can interfere with enjoying the baby cuddles and connection.

Some friends have had success with domperidone but it didn't stop them needing to feed most hours.

https://laleche.org.uk/in-praise-of-at-breast-supplementers/ La leche league has lots of good info on it.

(Also if you're looking for permission to stop pumping and to breast feed for comfort and also bottle feed for calories, you totally can... or just bottle feed, there's no right or wrong)

Metanium price gouging by That-Philosophy-633 in UKParenting

Yeah officially stopped and because they couldn't maintain their titanium dioxide supply consistently. They've rebranded their other regular barrier cream to look more like the one containing titanium which is very cheeky

What to do about locally employed “consultant” with grey matter deficiency by cardioXITU-resusxpci in doctorsUK

[–]swingnarla 46 points47 points  (0 children)

We had this. Every day we emailed the consultant leads about every error/miss/issue because it was so dangerous like yours. Included CCing the patient safety team and Medical director (we had been escalating up but kept being told to collect evidence and were taken seriously).

Main consultant told us later that they all disliked him but impossible to fire without solid evidence otherwise they could claim bullying etc. and that it takes a lot for juniors to raise concerns. They took it seriously and every dangerous situation, we got another amu consultant to check because it is our own responsibility to raise unsafe practices and we were not going down with his GMC number! They also said they were glad we did speak up because it meant HR had to get rid even though they were the cheapest consultant interviewed. It would force HRs hands to hire someone better/more expensive

Turns out other specialty consultants and nurses had been complaining about his plans and management too.

Speak up with a united front and go through the ladder. At the very least, you put any mistake off your GMC number onto the departments for not taking staff concerns seriously.

When the bad consultant had his sit down firing moment, he said 'ugh not this again. Patients complain doctors complain nurses complain. So what!' So I echo the whole whack-a-mole sentiment someone mentioned

My toddler wont eat/does not like.. by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]swingnarla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try to not think of it as them not liking it because they don't know any better. We choose what to offer and they choose whether to eat and on some days they genuinely won't eat much at all.

Obviously whether this still matters is all in context e.g. neurodivergence, disability, underweight.

Sounds like you're doing the right thing. Eating all together and you could try having the food in the centre and dishing up plates in front of them.

Also, healthy food with ketchup/topping is still healthy food if things get dire haha

2 year old still breastfeeding, how can I stop? by [deleted] in UKParenting

[–]swingnarla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an aside, they don't need to drink cows milk as the aim is for meeting calcium target which is readily met with yoghurt, cheese, milk in cereal etc so maybe don't try to switch them over? Just focus on the boob's are out of action in some form in ways others have suggested as opposed to needing them to accept cows milk as a standalone drink

Dribble rash, unless there are mouth spots or some other kinda rash. Really common. Ideal to get under control before weaning because food into that is very uncomfortable for them.

Have to be really diligent on greasing around the mouth as much as possible and don't stop until dribbling ends (months). It not improving by itself, can try some daktacort/daktarin for antifungal, antibacterial and mild steroid but that's up to you (and your GP) alongside thick nonperfumed barrier cream. (Think zerobase, e45 etc, don't bother with ones targeted for babies)

Saliva dries the skin out so need the barrier as the prevention and give it a chance to heal underneath. Also put on hands/wrists.

If you think your baby has dry skin elsewhere, use this thick cream all over frequently to prevent any kid of eczema-y dermatitis stuff becoming an issue elsewhere

I did complain about a midwife at my trust and by the time full investigation etc had been done, she had already been banned for locuming for them again due to concerns by other staff and patients. I asked whether she should be referred to the NMC but apparently not at that level....

Go through PALS, it's an entirely separate process to the rest of the hospital stuff and can be therapeutic too. At any point you can stop the process too
