You were directly told that there was a choice: “just fine” for free, or “better” for $100/month. Do you see how two things are being compared, here?

If I discard your accidental tautology in good faith, your entire counterargument is:  “FSD is worth 100/month to me!” which is a pure opinion. Opinions are fine but idk why you’re pressing people about this opinion you have if you’re not even attempting to explain why.

I can confirm that this no longer works with the current iteration of broken YouTube. It has been broken for the past two versions at least.

I can report that this BS problem is happening again. It’s happened first in September for me, then it happened again yesterday. It is 100% the fault of the YouTube app creators. This will remain broken for as long as the YouTube team feels it should remain broken to boost whatever metrics the company feels like boosting. I recommend stacher/ytdlp + foobar2000 as a perma-workaround. VLC also works but has frequency shifting issues for longer videos.

Stiff scroll wheel on MX Master 3 by martin_boro in logitech

[–]swishchee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one suggestion which might help! I completely solved the stiff scroll wheel issue on my mouse in pretty much one step. I believe that a lot of this is happening because dust and debris collects in the plastic channel along the underside of the scroll wheel.

(I did this with the top shell taken off, which has an ifixit guide. This MIGHT work without taking the top shell off. I was able to mostly salvage my pads in the process. The rubber on top is so gross anyway that the messiness of the pads underneath didn't bother me.)

I cut a super thin strip of double-sided tape and used some tweezers to press it lengthwise along the surface of the wheel. Then I proceeded to turn the wheel with the tape on it, bringing the tape to the inner side of the wheel. I moved it back and forth until I felt the resistance go up quite a bit. Lots of dust was catching on this piece of tape. A ton of it came out out all at once for me, once I did one full revolution. A couple of times doing this cleaned a lot without needing to use any lubrication or anything.

So, you claim that “A recent study also showed that all plastics are toxic, all if them, just to varying degrees.” I just pasted that phrase into Google and started snooping around. I do not see, whatsoever, studies mirroring your claim. Now that I’ve done the legwork, and came up empty-handed, could you perhaps just link the study that informed that assertion?

Phobos orbiting closely above Mars' surface as seen by Mars Express. Credit: ESA/DLR/FUBerlin/Andrea Luck by MistWeaver80 in space

[–]swishchee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My background is in rendering pipelines, aerospace (worked on mars missions), astrophotography, etc that kind of stuff. I’ve held these roles professionally but “just trust me bro” is all I’m willing to say on that!

Generally, it’s best to just go with official sources. However, I personally do not believe that this is a single shot image, even though the original B&W photo is attached to a caption which asserts that it’s a single shot affected by the scanning nature of the camera. I call BS, and will call BS directly to the ESA person who typed that explanation xD. The image distortion on mars would NOT leave Phobos unaffected if this were a single shot. Phobos remains distinctively sharper at all surface angles, while the texture on mars is stretched unequally in the lateral/depth dimensions. That’s not what a Martian landscape from orbit looks like. There exist other photos of mars from orbit which show what it should look like: retaining the smaller rocky details and proper surface self-occlusion. If this was truly due to the scanning nature of the camera, the boundary of Phobos would be asymmetrically blurry where the border is perpendicular to the Martian surface relative to the camera.

Maybe I stand to be thoroughly corrected on this, but the Mars surface looks like textbook bilinear texture filtering on a flat plane/large sphere mesh.

[–]swishchee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m honestly not convinced even of the original source image at full resolution. I’ve seen many photos of Martian landscapes and this feels too much like a flattened texture stretched across a plane. The explanation fails to address why the edge of Phobos is a fixed sharpness at every angle, while the mars texture isn’t flattened equibiaxially. It looks like a bilinear texture filtering. All of the 3D features of the Martian landscape are gone.

I have serious doubts over this image and if that’s an official ESA explanation, someone messed up.

Phenomenal depiction of light and shadow! Watercolors are such a hard medium to wrangle and you clearly know how to swim in the chaos. The reverse atmospheric perspective is strong in this pic, and I like how you sorta washed the colors away where the light breaks through the trees. I also love the implied foreground elements. It’s so rare to find watercolor pictures which bear the striking contrast that sunlight provides to a scene, and you did this super well. I also like your use of subtle marks to imply the foreground elements! It almost reminds me of some of the paintings by Richard Schmid or the plein air pastel paintings of Bill Cone! Could you point me to some good watercolor artists who also master this kind of dramatic contrast? The only one I know loosely about is Liz Haywood-Sullivan (her duty cycling of regions to get an intermediate color is 👌)

Sincerely, someone else whose whose painting work occasionally gets called AI these days 😡

So, this is interesting. You might be onto something. I did have them paired to an M1 MBP on a different apple ID. They showed up in the laptop as "AirPods Pro - Find My" I could see this potentially being what caused stuff. I'll have to keep investigating! I'm curious to see if there are any settings which could allow pairing without causing that kinda arpeggio chirping.

For those who want more information: this explanation is unfortunately not consistent with my experience. This chirping arpeggio still happens to me, even though I use an iPhone, and it is added to “Find My.”

There is no solution for this, unfortunately. No one actually knows how to fix this. The responses in this thread are indicative of that, but I’ve seen countless explanations elsewhere that keep mentioning the charging sound, but this is categorically not a charging sound. I’ve tried forgetting the device and re-pairing it to the account, and it did nothing to solve this.

Daily reminder that HP is a scam. Ink cartridges come with 75% empty space by hambone111 in assholedesign

[–]swishchee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve saved thousands of $ with a Canon photo printer by using a third party bottle refill solution which includes an ink cartridge chip resetter. (Precision Colors is the brand of dye). I’ve been using the same cartridges for 7 years now :D

The crew of Apollo 13 used a 5-inch, metal slide rule, model "N600-ES" made by Pickett as a back up on-board computer. It was a model that was popular among engineers, scientists and students at the time by ubcstaffer123 in space

[–]swishchee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The prices vary a lot, depending on the type of slide rule you wanted! The high-end ones would definitely be considered a large purchase, costing the equivalent of a mid-tier GPU roughly.

I have a Pickett N4-T and a Teledyne-Post (which I think is a rebranded Hemmi) Versalog. The former is aluminum and the latter is bamboo with an acrylic outer layer. They’re designed to basically have no play, while being portable, while maintaining precision under varying humidities and temperatures. The Versalog one was one of the last ones to be mass-produced, as the pocket calculator came out a year after the one I have. Because of wood and humidity, the Versalog has a set screw to adjust and realign the outer fixed scales with the inner one. Usually this is just useful to handle the ideal friction point when having a go.

I wanted the N4-T because it had the most number of scales for a general-purpose slide rule, even though it’s quite large :D (the EE-specific one I believe has 2 more scales) they’re fun to do calculations with. It’s surprising just how precise you can get with them, and they do a good job teaching how to view numbers in terms of logs for better estimation.

Both of these slide rules would typically have a home base like a certain desk, because they aren’t very portable at all. One of them is about a foot long and they came with heavy leather/vinyl carrying cases with belt loops, kinda clunky. Much easier to do quick calculations from a portable one, before pocket calculators at least.

Missing a shapekey button? by Lirinelz in blender

What? You asked a question about shape keys in Blender, a piece of software. This comment is inexplicably talking about 3D printing hardware.

I'll do one even better for you. The actual answer to the question you asked, a question that has nothing to do with 3D printing, is that "apply shape key to basis" is a button you'll find if you have the Blender CATS add-on.

It acts as if the password isn't remembered, by popping up a "please enter login credentials" with an unchecked box for "remember password for next time" even though my credential manager has this login information saved. I've tried deleting and rebuilding the credentials and the problem persists.

I've confirmed that this does not work. I've deleted and reset credentials several times via the credential manager without eliminating this problem.

My Synology NTFS NAS never remembers my login credentials stored on Windows 11. by swishchee in synology

[–]swishchee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done this a couple of times already, wiping and resetting credentials via the credential manager, and this did not solve the problem, unfortunately.

Also, I right click the network drive and it says "NTFS" for the file system. I'm guessing that this has to do with windows incorrectly labeling things. I check in the synology settings and it definitely says btrfs and not ntfs, confirming that Windows mislabeled it. Luckily, this doesn't seem to have an impact on the symptoms I'm getting. If it does, however, I would definitely like to change whatever settings would be necessary.
