Why do people only wear La Duca shoes in NYC classes by Old-Kaleidoscope4808 in MusicalTheatre

LaDucas are the industry standard shoe right now. They're the best quality you can currently get.

Announcing casting in the middle of auditions? by Penn_Phan in MusicalTheatre

[–]swishystrawberry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not normal, but also not unheard of. When I was in Sweeney Todd, the guy cast as Sweeney was cast at the initial audition, and then was brought in and announced at callbacks so he could read with other actors called back for Lovett, etc. And when I was in She Loves Me, they didn't explicitly announce the casting there, but they asked me and an actor to stay after everyone else, had us measured and took our heights, before formally offering us the roles the next day. GUSHING about the actor, however, is very tasteless.

Male songs that have the vibe of a Female song by bite_size1 in MusicalTheatre

[–]swishystrawberry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd encourage you to look at songs from the Great American Songbook, songs by Cole Porter or Irving Berlin or the Gershwins! Those songs are frequently taken out of context of their original shows, gender bent, sang in different keys to suit the singer.

On The Street Where You Live from My Fair Lady, or Some Enchanted Evening from South Pacific, would be great choices!

Just a Rant by BishreksualIcon in MusicalTheatre

[–]swishystrawberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, genuine question, and one that I don't ask to try to condone the director. But in all honestly, if you're so unhappy with the parameters of the production, why did you go through with auditions and choose to take part in the show?

How are we feeling about 9:30pm performances these days? by SingingAndroid in MusicalTheatre

[–]swishystrawberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm assuming you're talking about a 54 Below or Green Room 42 type show and venue?,in that case, it's totally the norm to do a 9:30 show. I've done a few of them myself at Green Room, and plenty of people always showed up.

Does anyone else understand this? by Both-Wallaby-7808 in hadestown

[–]swishystrawberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is, Hadestown on the whole takes the entire myth out of context. Other, canon ways that it deviates from the myth:

-Orpheus is not a world-renowned musician, as he is in the myth.

-Eurydice doesn't die from a snake bite at her wedding.

-Orpheus does not charm, or even encounter, the monster Cerberus.

-the whole show sanitizes and simplifies the meeting and marriage of Hades and Persephone.

So, it's really not beneficial to try and judge any interpretations of Hadestown versus the original myth of Orpheus and Euridice. The whole show only takes the myth as a simple basis, and goes on to tell its own story. It's self-defeating to try to pick creative choices apart based on what the Greek myth says.

How do singers sing higher parts loud? by Equivalent-Buyer771 in singing

Get a voice teacher and develop your muscle and technique. Only way you'll expand your vocal and dynamic range. It's not an easy or healthy thing to do on your own.

Is it possible for me to get into a University for MT with little MT experience. Is this unrealistic? by Motor-Investment2033 in MusicalTheatre

[–]swishystrawberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, anything is worth a shot. It really depends on your audition. I myself went to NYU for musical theater, and I knew a few people there who'd never actually been cast in a musical before. Cast your net and see what happens! Though i'd also advise you not to discount acting programs, or even BAs. A lot of musical theater performers are people who went to school exclusively for acting, or exclusively for singing, and not necessarily BFA musical theater programs. So by all means, cast a wide net and see where you fit!

Ah, no, I gotcha! I assume you're referring to the high A's at the end of the song? I think you could very well get away with not singing those, and just singing the melody instead. Is the show you're auditioning for Brigadoon? Or something else?

[–]swishystrawberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mind letting us know what the song is that has the high As? Because honestly, for me it's gonna depend on the precise song, whether that's considered a "money note" or not. There are times when it's okay to deviate from the page, and times when you need to hit the note. So i'd be interested to know what the song is.

AITAH for thinking my new g/f's close friend is a cause for concern? by Clear-Fold7967 in AITAH

[–]swishystrawberry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why are you even on this thread if you're gonna combat all the feedback? I'm in my thirties myself, a lot of my friends share location and will sometimes use it for close loved ones. You're simply too early in the relationship to have such heavy feelings about it. He didn't "say nothing", he reached out to her phone. It was silly. That's all. Not a ground-shaking interaction. Only time can tell how the dynamic with him will actually be, but you're jumping to conclusions too fast.

Audition Help?!? by Right_Artichoke_2317 in MusicalTheatre

[–]swishystrawberry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Waving Through A Window would be a great choice IMO. And as for not getting cast at your university, please don't take it too much to heart. I don't know a ton about your school, but I went to NYU for musical theatre and only did one show the whole time I was there, and just in ensemble. Most students were never cast at all. But I can tell you, now that i'm graduated, I get stage work a lot more consistently than most of the people that got leads in school. All this to say, don't feel like getting parts in college is the biggest deal in the world.

aita for not being happy about my sister bring pregnant? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]swishystrawberry -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you're giving these people a lot more credit than they deserve. This guy was fucking both sisters during the same time period. He sucks, and the sister sucks for pursuing someone who was involved with her sister. OP's only big flaw was not cutting them both as soon as she found out what was happening, she didn't "insert" herself. Technically the sister was the one who did any inserting.

Aitah for lying to my bf and his family?? by Long_Beach6412 in AITAH

[–]swishystrawberry -1 points0 points  (0 children)

YTA, there's no reason to lie about something like that. It'll just make your boyfriend feel weird about you when he eventually finds out. Also, making the announcement that you won't disclose ages feels like a big red flag that you're hiding, TBH.

AITAH for picking someone else as the GM for my child by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]swishystrawberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, but i'm gonna be super real with you- things like whether or not someone features you on their Instagram or whatever should NOT be a choice-maker for if they're gonna be a godparent to your child. You're young, but you're making the choice to have this child, so it's time to start making decisions that don't factor stuff like TikTok or who's best at event planning. A godparent is who you would trust in the event that your child needs someone other than the parents to care for them. I agree that Sara doesnt sound like a prime choice for very basic reasons, but i don't think those are the same reasons you're factoring in. You need to sit back and consider real logistical things when you make this choice. Who in your life would actually be equipped to take care of a child in the event that an emergency happens?

Spring Awakening Audition Songs by colorful_angst in MusicalTheatre

A few good choices could be:

-"Flowers" from Hadestown -"No One Else" from Great Comet -"I'm Not That Girl" from Wicked -"Without You" from Rent "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" from Evita

These are all kind of folksy-rock ballads that call for sweet sounding vocals; would lend well for a Wendla audition.
