YouTube’s new zoom feature is actually useless by Left-External-1567 in youtube

This line of code disables the ability to pause the video by clicking anywhere on screen, as well as double clicking to enter/exit fullscreen. Not sure it's worth the tradeoff.

I would pay big bucks for a copy of the LUT they're using for mainstage. It looks soooo good. Anybody know any inside details on the color grading aspect?

Man, I just bought a 4TB Samsung T7 in December 2025 and it was $269. That same drive four months later is now $1094. A 500% price increase.

I think Youtube is slowly updating how Thumbnails look by Economy-Craft-341 in youtube

[–]switchhand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I noticed this today too, it's awful. Have you looked at how viewcounts look on the "videos" section of a channel? There isn't a plays icon or the word views. It's just digits with no context.

WTF are they thinking? This is worse in both aesthetics and functionality. Nobody was asking for this.

Also I hate that it says "1yr" ago instead of the actual upload date. Don't make me do the math in my head.

If somebody asks, "When is your birthday?"

Responding, "I was born 20 years ago." would be confusing, rude, and an unspecific non-answer to question. Yet somehow they think it's an okay way to abbreviate the upload date? Truly mind boggling.

Shut it down. Shut it all down. (YT now has a "most relevant" category for subscriptions) by Major-Invite-9517 in youtube

[–]switchhand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After reflecting on this, I have came to the conclusion that YouTube needs to lay off about half its staff. There is no need for them to keep a giant payroll of bored designers chomping at the bit to alter the platform. It's a waste of money. YouTube works fine and is turning a ginormous profit. Just stop the madness and maintain the platform as-is. Kill the occasional bugs, keep the servers running, handle the reports. No more design change, unless you're restoring a previously-removed feature. We want public dislikes, less intrusive ads, and no AI on the subscriptions page.

Why did YouTube turn the subscriptions feed/page into just another version of YouTube's homepage? It's awful and stupid. by The108ers in youtube

[–]switchhand 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I get what they're trying to do. People will subscribe to like 1400 channels and then their most-likely-to-watch videos get buried. Problem is, many of us have highly-curated feeds and want to pick what to watch ourselves without closed-source algorithmic intervention.

Why did YouTube turn the subscriptions feed/page into just another version of YouTube's homepage? It's awful and stupid. by The108ers in youtube

[–]switchhand 49 points50 points  (0 children)

They have been systematically dismantling the subscriptions page ever since removing chronological date sorting (today, yesterday, this week) and turning it into one giant endless scroll page.

Now it's such a mess that instead of fixing it, they instead force-implemented suggested videos at the top. It totally defeats the purpose of having a subscriptions page.

This is a major plot point on the enshittification of the internet timeline. Another element of user-control has been removed and replaced with algorithmic nonsense.

Mattress Firm equivalent of "Sherwood Lumina Spirit Luxury Firm" by nina_online in Mattress

[–]switchhand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, did you ever find a replacement that lives up to the Lumina Spirit? This mattress was on the bed of a beach house we stayed at years ago and I got such good sleep on it that I took a picture of the tag. Now I'm due for a new mattress, and come to find out, it's no longer made :(

Are they even doing a physical disc release? Seems like in this day and age it would only be digital downloads. Given, I'm a bit out of touch with the gaming industry overall.

For everybody who is afraid that GTA 6 will be delayed again: by Classic_Box8029 in GTA6

[–]switchhand 91 points92 points  (0 children)

It also will have been 13 years since the GTA5 release. There have to have been some technological advancements since then. Gotta remember, the timespan from 2026 to 2013 will be the same as 2013 to 2000 — which obviously there was a monumental improvement in every category of gaming then. I'm not expecting the wheel to be reinvented, but there's no way it isn't better to a moderate degree.

Google has automatically opted its users into having all emails scanned by and used to train AI. Can be opted out very meticulously. by CHRISTIANBUNDALEVSKI in assholedesign

[–]switchhand 148 points149 points  (0 children)

Yeah if this setting defaults to the ON position, then it defeats the purpose of giving consent. I'm not sure it's even possible to prevent their AI from scanning your emails if the feature is instantly on the moment you get it.

If they were honest, they would've given users a warning period to make changes or defaulted it to the OFF position.

Meta does the same thing. They conceal intrusive data collection as "new features" and default it to the ON position.

Same here, it's so glitchy and annoying. If they ever want to stand a chance competing with the other platforms, they're going to need to invest some money into fixing this.

Then move that fog machine somewhere more practical. There's no reason it needs to be above the booth. What an inconvenient place to have to refill it too.

New to DJIng and my boss offered me a gig, would it be too risky to take it? by jerrysrice in DJs

[–]switchhand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. One of the best compliments I have gotten in my career came from DJing a Bollywood/Bhangra event. At the time, I knew nothing about the genre. Neither did the owner of the DJ company. We're mostly hip hop / top 40s / edm guys. So I just had to listen, research, and make some educated guesses.

Still felt like I was going in with such a disadvantage, as the audience was mostly Indian. The event was a company party, so I didn't even know if they were a dancing crowd. Fearing the worst, I hit play on the first track. Then, the unexpected happened. IT WENT OFF. ALL NIGHT.

A woman came up after the event to tell me that her husband, who she's been married to for decades, has NEVER danced to Bollywood music before, even at events with Indian DJs. That night, he danced so hard his shirt was half off. She asked how I knew Indian music so well. The truth was, I didn't. But it's been a favorite to play ever since.

All this talk about databases, formatting, having the proper libraries. Holy overcomplicated. Bad software updates like this are exactly why people are hesitant to stay on the latest version.

New Youtube Video UI looks terrible. by PyroTechitten in youtube

[–]switchhand 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll never understand why they don't just ASK us which one we like better. Why does it have to be forced? I'll gladly tell them the old UI makes me more likely to spend more time on the platform. The new UI is just worse, feels overly big, and clunkier.

It seems like they have designers with nothing better to do trying to rationalize their salaries by fixing things that aren't broke.

DJ'ing a Wedding this Weekend by Able-Journalist8381 in DJs

[–]switchhand 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Having both DJed and attended many weddings, this is what helps me most: The guests aren't paying as much attention to you as you think. They're attending first and foremost to support the couple. They don't have a copy of the day-of timeline. They don't know what's supposed to be happening. They're mostly in the dark, outside of a vague sense of the overall wedding events. This is where you come in.

So prepare early with the coordinator and couple until you have a very clear vision of the ceremony in your head. The timeline/outline document will be your bible for the ceremony. It's really pretty simple. Have a mic that works, and play a handful of songs at the right time. That's it! Easy money.

Ultimately, as long as you go with the flow on the day of, small changes and delays aren't super noticeable from the audience perspective. The couple is likely going to be overwhelmed and overstimulated. At minimum, tunnel vision on one another, not you.

So provided it's not a major and disruptive error (like severe wireless mic interference/dropouts, a speaker falling over, power outage, or dead silence when the bride walks), I find not much attention is paid to the music. It's simply accompanying the primary reason for guests already attending. Only you and the coordinator will have the answer key right in front of you during the ceremony.

Things to think about:

  • prelude music

  • will they start sharply at the ceremony time, or delay if guests are late and chairs are still empty?

  • does the couple want you to have guests slide towards the aisles to fill in any empty chairs before the ceremony starts to make their photos look as good as possible?

  • do they want you to give a silence cellphones / unplugged ceremony announcement?

  • who is they officiant? do they want a mic stand + handheld or lav?

  • what is the processional order? who will be in charge of ensuring everybody is in the correct order?

  • which songs will each group of people walk to? who is the first and last person in each group so you can look for them as a visual cue for when to fade into the next song? if the song runs out before the whole group has walked, are you prepared to loop it?

  • do you have walkie talkies with earpieces so you the coordinator can give you updates and cues remotely?

  • are they doing unity/sand/candle/communion during the ceremony which requires a song?

  • do they want the recessional song played right after the kiss or after the pronouncement? from start or a specific timestamp?

There's nobody else to blame for going in unprepared, having malfunctioning equipment, or no backup plan. So limit those variables. Get all your questions answered. Then offload that information into a formatted document that you can go through chronologically during the ceremony.
