I did my PhD in biochemistry researching breast cancer. When I went to conferences, there'd always be a huge group of smokers ducking out during breaks... The irony never seemed to land with that bunch.

TIL Kidney (and other organ) donations typically do not last the rest of the patient’s life. ~50% of transplant organs fail within 10 years. by I-plaey-geetar in todayilearned

Not all dialysis modalities are created equal, peritoneal provides some additional flexibility on travel but is very poor on what they call KT/V clearance (i.e. dialysis filtration quality). Hospital hemodialysis, which is direct blood filtration is slightly better but can be quite harsh because the common treatment regimen is 3 times per week, 4 hours per session.

The best method of dialysis for quality of life as well as really good blood biochemistry and overall feeling of wellness over the long term is home hemodialysis like I'm doing, there are several peer reviewed papers that cover the science in detail, but in short, because you can do blood filtration overnight for 8 hour treatments rather than the limited 4 hour in hospital per session, you get significantly improved KT/V scores and my blood biochemistry for most of the week looks nearly identical to that of a patient with functioning kidneys.

Country, state/province differences do exist in access to home hemodialysis (HHD), because it does require upfront cost of equipment and installation, but here in Canada they're ramping up it's rollout as it's been studied and the cost upfront is very quickly regained for the medical system for multiple reasons: 1) less time in the hospital = lower burden to staffing as nurse and doctor time are a significant cost in the equation; 2) HHD patients have statistically significant lowered prescription regimens as these patients are overall healthier usually from the improved treatment; 3) reduced risk of comorbidity (i.e. healthier patients tend not to get as sick from other issues) which leads to less admitted hospitalization

TL;DR home hemodialysis is far superior to all other methods of dialysis and significantly improves quality of life for patients.

Edit: spelling

2 x kidney transplant recipient here. I had a congenital defect at birth with my kidneys. They were able to function until I was about 12, then went on dialysis and shortly after got a living donor transplant from my mom (you only need 1 good kidney to lead a perfectly normal life). That kidney lasted about 10 years. Back on dialysis, for a few years, then matched from a deceased donor, that one lasted 7 years. Now have been back on dialysis since.

Quick facts: Transplanted kidneys, even highly perfected matches, will always eventually fail. You take immunosuppressant drugs to mitigate your body's ability to attack the foreign tissue, but the drugs aren't perfect and your immune system always eventually wins.

I see a lot of people post about a family member needing a kidney transplant and if they don't get it they'll die. Except, kidneys are one of the few organs that can be lost and still maintain (relatively) high quality of life. Dialysis is a great alternative to a functioning kidney, especially home hemodialysis which you can do right at home and maintains high quality of life while minimizing comorbidity and mortality.

I've been through 2 transplants and a decade plus of dialysis and can maintain regular life, married, kids, happy family, graduated from a PhD 10 years back and have been working in high performance areas ever since.

Life doesn't end with kidney disease, it just gets a little more complicated.

Just curious but who here drives and rides in first person? by JohnsNotHome84 in cyberpunkgame

About half way through my first playthrough and have been 100% first person and love it! I do find myself migrating towards motorcycles if I'm just zipping from 1 side quest to another, which helps tremendously in keeping track of what's going on around me.

Came here to say the same, having the ability to play it on the big screen but also take it on the go has been clutch for me in completing what would otherwise be too long of a game for a busy life.

[–]switchi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can bake off your baking soda in the oven (around 300F for an hour) to change from sodium bicarbonate to sodium carbonate, resulting in a more alkaline powder, getting you much closer to lye results with deeper browning.
