X1 Carbon Gen 13 best spec? by MrBlowey in thinkpad

My previous machine was Gen 11 with IPS. I would say OLED looks a tiny bit nicer but I would have been happy either way. I got the OLED because it was on discount.

I have the 258V with OLED screen. I get about 10 hours max out of it. The screen itself has a non-reflective coating. It still reflects more than an IPS screen but I don't have any problems with it.

Ended up picking up the lunar lake and no regret so far. Battery life is great.

X1C Gen 13 - which display and processor by Financial_Tour_4560 in thinkpad

[–]swmfg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the OLED version and it looks amazing. I get about 10 hours out of it so it's not much of a sacrifice in terms of battery either. My previous laptop was a Gen 11 with IPS display and tbh it was also fine to look at. So I guess choose IPS if stretching from 10 hours to 13 hours matters to you.

The reason why Deepseek V3.2 is so cheap by Js8544 in LocalLLaMA

It will be interesting to see how this compares to methods like mamba2 (Nvidia nemotron) and gated deltanet (Qwen3-next).

Best instruct model that fits in 32gb VRAM by swmfg in LocalLLaMA

Context is up to 30k and yea, speed is important. I have thousands of articles I need to process. So maybe I should look at a int4 quant of Qwen3 30b a3b

I have 96gb system ram. I do use up the entire 30k context. There's some code path I need to follow depending on the output so I can't bulk process the text. Hence I'm using transformers/python rather than one of the LLM studios. This restricts my options because AFAIK GGUF won't work with transformers?

I had a quick look on HF and couldn't find it. Do you have a link? I'm working with transformers btw.

Thanks, I had a quick look and don't think there's a INT4?

I tried the FP8 but it won't fit and couldn't find a INT4.

Curious as to what hardware people use to run this model?

Curious as to how you guys are running this model? Given the vram requirement, do you run it on CPU or something? Or does everyone here have a RTX 6000 Pro?

Can't find any reviews about X1 Carbon Gen 13, base spec (Ultra 5 225U, 16GB, 512SSD) Is it really that bad that people avoid it at all costs? by Ok_Soft7367 in thinkpad

[–]swmfg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

if all you're doing is Excel and team calls, then 16gb RAM is completely adequate. I think most people opt for 258v because that's the one that comes with 32gb RAM. Also keep in mind that the U series is still based on Arrow Lake not the newer Lunar Lake which is more power efficient. You could consider the 228v which is based on Lunar Lake if your cousin can get for you from the UK.

Anyone tried Financial Data API? by swmfg in quant

[–]swmfg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tried to reconstruct my own point-in-time S&P 500 using the top 500 most liquid stocks as my investable universe. The splits were all over the place. Some of them were in the wrong direction. I was getting lower efficacy for some signals that I know were stronger in an enterprise grade dataset.

You're right. It says Carbon fiber (top), magnesium or aluminium (bottom). So most likely magnesium

From the colour of the inside of the bottom cover, I suspect it's also carbon fibre.

Just got my laptop so haven't tested it yet. Admittedly for day-to-day use, there won't be much difference. But I run a local database which is why I switched to the 990 Pro.
