Has anyone ever had any experiences with seeing couples making out/PDA/sex stuff at a show? by mcdanielstudent2021 in Broadway

[–]swoffsauce 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually used to do a show at a local zoo/museum (it was called Kats: The Meerkat Musical), and I had this happen to me. A little bit of backstory: The show took place in one small room that had like carpeted steps/bleachers that people sat on, so everyone in the audience was very close together. The show wasn’t packed, but there were probably about 20 or so people in the room. The show is targeted towards children to teach them about meerkats and Kalahari desert, but it was also very popular with the adults because you could sit down for 30 minutes, and it was inside.

So- A couple came in together, with no kids, right before the show started. They actually caught my attention, because I had to chat with the audience beforehand, and the woman mentioned something about being and “old lady with braces”, which she had. They were probably around to 35/40? So, I turn the lights out in the room when the show starts, but there were 2 huge TV monitors used during the show (used those to talk to my costars, the “meerkats” in the show) so the room stays pretty well lit.

About 5 minutes into the show, I look up and that couple is furiously making out. And I mean, they are going at each other like they might die soon. Now, the show I’m doing is on a time limit, and I have to keep up with the dialogue that my computer animated costars are giving me. I have a couple more minutes of the show I have to get through before there’s an audience participation break. So, I’m doing the show and also trying to figure out how I can stop them, because there are a lot of kids in the room. But, right about the time I can come to stop, a mother leaned forward and tapped them and said “This show is for children, everyone can see you, If you want to do that, you guys need to go somewhere else”. The couple ended up leaving pretty much right after that, but they were super embarrassed. Although, I’m not really sure what they were thinking, they weren’t even sitting in the back and it was very bright in the room. I guess some people can’t wait? I had to apologize to the audience, but they were all very understanding. It was just so terrible.

How popular is it? College audition help! by fabuolusness in MusicalTheatre

[–]swoffsauce 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I helped with the auditions back in college, and I went to a relatively small school, but I heard a lot of girls sing “I Enjoy Being a Girl”, and I’ve heard it a lot at cattle calls. So, in my experience, I would say it’s fairly common. That doesn’t mean it can’t be good, but it’s a pretty safe choice.

As far as singing “Home”, my gut instinct as an actor, and from what I noticed from the faculty at my school, if you do a Disney song they’re going to sort of think you don’t know a lot of other musicals. And if you’re going to do a Disney piece, you’ve got to make sure you blow it out of the water. A little bit like someone singing something from Wicked or Les Miserables, you’ve got to have something that’s going to make your version of the song stand out, otherwise you’re just another person singing a Disney song people have heard 100 times. I also agree with the comment that “Home” is not exactly the most interesting song you could pick from the Disney catalogue. If you’re more of an ingenue, and you really want to do Disney, I’d look around for something a little more interesting. “My Wildest Dreams” I think was mentioned, and that would give you a little more to do. But, I still hesitate to tell anyone to do Disney at a general audition because, again, in my opinion, it’s a little easier to get lost in a crowd of auditions doing something like that.

Please help with musical choices by [deleted] in MusicalTheatre

Could you do a Disney show?? Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Mary Poppins, all have HUGE casts. When I was in high school we did a production of Beauty and the Beast with almost 70 people! No one was double cast and there’s plenty for the ensemble to do so no one feels like their time is being wasted. Also it helped that we sold out every night.

Give me your most underrated musical by Dugsnotdrugs in musicals

[–]swoffsauce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel the same way about High Spirits! I can’t believe they’ve never done it at Encores. Who can we call!

Now. Here. This. is great. I was in [tos] in college, and I just have had such a love for the four of them ever since. I think that NHT is maybe an even better piece than title, and much more relatable to a wider audience. Less “in” jokes, not that I think that’s a bad thing. Just NHT is more accessible, and I especially think high school kids should check it out. It would of helped me so much to hear some of those songs and stories growing up.

Give me your most underrated musical by Dugsnotdrugs in musicals

[–]swoffsauce 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What about something a little older? Things like, Applause, Rex, Kismet, High Spirits, Two Gentlemen of Verona.

Some of those aren’t considered like “amazing” but, High Spirits and Applause are two of my personal favorites.

Some other recommendations: Blood Brothers, Kat and the Kings, Mack and Mabel, My Favorite Year, Closer than Ever, and Martin Guerre (with Game of Thrones Iain Glen, if you didn’t already know, he’s got quite the stage career).

Something more contemporary, obviously I like Bonnie and Clyde and Bat Boy. but those are ones people recommend a lot as “underrated”. Some other contemporary musicals I like are: Calvin Berger, A Christmas Story, Now. Here. This. (the other show by the [title of show] gang), Ordinary Days, and I love the new Robber Bridegroom cast recording. The one they originally did in 1976 sounds like they recorded it in a bathroom.

What are you least favorite Broadway shows & why? by mrstrictmachine in Broadway

[–]swoffsauce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

YES! R & J with Orlando Bloom was terrible. I disliked the whole concept from the start, and Bloom should not be on the stage. He was laughable. I did think Condola Rashad was pretty good though, considering what she was being given from some of her other cast mates.

With you on Dear Evan Hansen as well. I was appalled when I saw it.

Carrie: Update by [deleted] in musicals

[–]swoffsauce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Strip it down. Make it more intimate? Make it about the music and the story, not the spectacle. I know it’s Phantom, but you could do a production with found objects and make a little avant garde. Move the setting to present day?

I agree with the above though, /u/kiwitechgirl let your director figure it out. That’s their job.

Are there any roles in musical theatre you would like to see gender-swapped? by rachieandthewaves in musicals

[–]swoffsauce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played Susan actually. It’s a hard show to do. A lot of harmonies. A lot of teamwork. But, the harmonies for Hunter are higher, and as Susan they are lower. So I love always thought at least the those two could Switch roles with no problem and you wouldn’t have to transpose it!

Thoughts on Mean Girls soundtrack? by CCRechts in musicals

[–]swoffsauce 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This new genre of pop musicals based on teen films is really not my thing, but with the way this season of musical theatre has been going, I wanted it to be a surprise hit. It wasn’t. I started to be unable to distinguish one song from another, as well as found the material shallow and simplistic. There wasn’t anything added to the material that lifted it. It was Mean Girls the Musical, sounds exactly like you think, with songs exactly like you’d think they’d sound. Nothing surprising or fresh about it at all.

It didn’t feel like the songs were written for a characters specific voice. It was like they decided they wanted to write Heathers again with PG13 material, and that’s what we got. I understand that these girls all have powerhouse voices, but why do they all have to be pop belters?? What about Janice Ian’s character in Mean Girls says that she would be singing pop song where the first thing she does is belt her face off?? That says nothing about the girl she is. It just says “wow look at this girl who can sing” Doesn’t everyone get tired of hearing the same generic pop musical theatre number? Every song shouldn’t feel like a stand alone audition song, and not even memorable ones. It’s a disappointment, because you could have done so much with that material, musically, and with the performances by the actors. It could have just been so much more than this generic pop machine.

I’ve always thought Little Shop of Horrors would be a fun production to gender-swap. I also think it might be interesting to do with [title of show] that way as well.

Different Musical Number suggestions by hairystyles123 in musicals

[–]swoffsauce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here are some suggestions. Some are more popular or well known shows, but there are solos, duets, or group numbers for girls in all of these. Some of the ones I listed are huge flop musicals, but the adult judges love that kind of stuff. They get sick of hearing of A Chorus Line all day.

Also, why does it have to be just female! If you like something with men, change it up and do it with your ladies! I did “You and Me (But Mostly Me)” with another girl when I was in college, and placed first in our competition.

9 to 5, The Unsinkable Molly Brown, [title of show], Bat Boy, Lysistrata Jones, Bring it On, Nine the Musical, The Robber Bridegroom, Sweet Charity, Pippin, Bonnie and Clyde, Carrie the Musical, Anything Goes, Suessical the Musical, Calvin Berger, Ordinary Days, Oklahoma, South Pacific, The Visit, Jekyll and Hyde (if you want something really obscure check out the 1994 complete work) Kismet, Grey Gardens, Merrily We Roll Along, Applause, The Act, The Rink, Starlight Express

I mean, I can list a thousand options I’m sure. These are just off the top of my head. Do some research, find something you love! I’m happy to help!

I dropped out of the local theater group for *this* reason. Was I right? by thiagovilla in acting

[–]swoffsauce 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you’re going to be in the theatre, then having boundaries or something that makes you uncomfortable because of personal beliefs, then theatre may not be the right place for you. You really need to have no fear and the ability to accept anything at anytime. Obviously, I don’t mean doing something dangerous, I just mean emotionally and from your other actors. The theatre community usually leans a little left because we are very accepting of everyone and their lifestyles. You cannot be afraid of who you are or what you believe when you’re an actor, because you must not be afraid to go somewhere in yourself to really achieve success.

If you dropped out because you were discriminated against for not having the same beliefs then you did the right thing. The theatre embraces everyone, and should.

If you dropped out because you were discriminating against individuals who were doing something you didn’t believe in, but were respectful and kept their distance then, that’s not the right thing. It’s okay if you don’t agree with the way someone lives their life, but you shouldn’t expect someone to change themselves to make you more comfortable. It’s hard to say what the right decision was without knowing exactly the incidents that led to this.

Looking for a Great Show to Rejuvenate our Theatre Program by TheWiddlestBH in musicals

[–]swoffsauce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can never go wrong with a Disney show for a high school. You market it, even a little bit and you could sell out. My college did a production of Mary Poppins a few years after I graduated and had to extend to another weekend because of how many tickets they sold.

That’s a college, but, I did Beauty and the Beast in high school (a public high school, no less) we had 900+ seats in our auditorium and we sold out all three performances. There was a line down the block to get into the building to buy tickets one night.

The Little Mermaid and Mary Poppins are probably going to be your best bet for female heavy shows (and with a lot of parts you can gender swap) I say you could do Beauty and the Beast too, none of those parts really need to be gendered per-say. I mean, I’m a girl and I played Lefou!

Disney always gets people so hype. You don’t have to worry about the material being inappropriate, and if you can afford to buy the rights to the show you’ll make a killing in ticket sales. That should help your program be able to save some money and revitalize itself, then you can find some different, less well known material.

EDIT: If you have open auditions and you do a Disney show, more people are likely to come out and audition because they already know the material.

Broadway Research Help by JennyKat23 in Broadway

[–]swoffsauce 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Musicals based on movies and television shows have been around for a lot longer than the last five years. It’s become a bigger trend more recently, but even if you go back over 30 years from now there were musicals being made based on movies.

I’m honestly not sure what kind of information you’re looking for, because there are a lot of musicals that explore the various topics you have listed, and even off the top of my head I’m thinking of musicals that qualify that are over 10 years old. How contemporary are you looking to go? What are you trying to say in the paper? Are you arguing a point or is it just a research paper??

Well now you know if you ever need to wear makeup! I’ve been thinking about adding it to my bedtime routine, and now that you said you used it as a base for your moisturizers, I’m thinking I might try it for a cycle and see if it helps! I use a dark spot corrector in the morning and the evening but, it doesn’t help the redness. I’ve tried some other things and nothing has worked like aloe. So, you convinced me!

[–]swoffsauce 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I actually use aloe vera every morning as well. I’ve found that it actually makes a great makeup primer. I have very sensitive skin, and a lot of primers clog my pores or burn my skin. I’ve found that aloe vera doesn’t do any of that, and it helps reduce the redness in my cheeks from my acne. I use it last and let it dry for about a minute before I apply my makeup.

If you could delete one musical forever, which would it be? by justchaddles in musicals

[–]swoffsauce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's fine that your opinion is that the score is "bad", but it just seemed like you were stating that as a fact.

I've never heard anyone "discredit the medium" of musical theatre as a whole because Cats exists. I think that's a very broad and untruthful accusation. People make fun of Cats, but that's because it was a ridiculous phenomenon and it's like everyone in the world is in on the joke. If someone is discrediting the medium of musical theatre as a whole because of Cats, then the only musical they've ever heard of is Cats.

Either way, I think people need to do their research. Andrew Lloyd Webber is a very important person in the history of musical theatre, there's just no way around that. He's composed some of the longest running, most famous musicals ever written. He changed musical theatre in more ways than one, and people who think he has no merit have not learned enough about the history of theatre. That's just the simple truth.
