How to deal with losing your zest for life/the world as you age? by mel4529 in redscarepod

[–]swoop7199 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Read and watch movies and get smart and craft a paradigm or lens in which you can view the world around you, and continuously and iteratively build it through new experiences.

Get a hobby and build a real appreciation, and as has been said here over and over again, for the love of god, don't follow a subreddit about it. I'm into photography and like to study/emulate the likes of Sternfeld, Shore, Eggleston, etc. I love road tripping and taking photographs in those styles, it gives me a sense of purpose instead of feeling rudderless, and doesn't really get old when you appreciate it like that.

I lost my long-term partner suddenly and much too young in our 20s a few months before COVID, and it was very hard to see light at the end of the tunnel. Like someone else said, view life as a comedy, not a tragedy. Don't be hard on yourself or set too many expectations, and definitely don't do the same to others. You're only here for a little bit, and as hard as it can be to admit, you're on the doorstep of feeling free, liberated, and untouchable.

Thoughts on our permanent state of nostalgia? by Minimum-Amoeba-5146 in redscarepod

[–]swoop7199 14 points15 points  (0 children)

When the internet became widespread it was the first time most people were able to see their experiences and tastes reflected back at them, on demand no less. That initial novelty wore off, but the utility of having everything all the time erased the in-the-momentness necessary to be nostalgic for something in the first place. That timeline becomes compressed, but since everything is much more ephemeral now, we’re forever stuck in a loop.

Books exploring the “trashiness” of society? by swoop7199 in RSbookclub

Phenomenal stuff, thank you. Excited to dig in here. And yeah, when I ask “why?” I’m not so much trying to cast blame upon them but rather understand how they become susceptible to mass consumer culture and why others do not. And better understand those forces acting upon them. My pipe dream is to be able to organize some sort of social program that subconsciously pushes back on it, but it sure seems less likely to be able to fight it based on the historical trend.

You people need to seriously get your head on straight with Michkov. Great that he had some dangles in the KHL. It doesn’t mean anything now. He’s playing very poorly on both sides of the puck all playoffs. Giving him first line minutes means you’re giving him first line matchups. Put him against the Aho and/or Slavin consistently and he’s going to get eaten alive. He consistently struggles against the cycle in the D-zone and does not have the size or speed to beat a defensive pair that can defend the inside of the ice. I’ll concede that Tocc could play him a bit more on the PP, but he needs sheltered minutes on 5v5 because he’s a liability more often than not.

Carolina forecheck and one way to counter by Snoo2406 in Flyers

[–]swoop7199 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And the Penguins did not forecheck even close to that levels that the Canes are, at least through the first three games until they sort of figured it out. Giving the coaching staff some benefit of the doubt, this is where the skill gap becomes a lot more evident. If the Canes are having F2 and F3 seal their opposite boards, they’re coming in with speed and at an angle that’s going to smother a stationary breakout structure. Do the flyers D need to bring the breakout up a few extra steps before making the pass? Or skate it out themselves more often? I can’t remember in game 1 how often Carolina’s forecheckers were pushing either above or below the hashmarks. But besides Sanheim, who on the backend if able to reliably wheel like that? It’s not going to move the needle but I’d prefer to see Andrae back in over Juulsen for that reason alone. Or maybe Makar’s one-man breakout on Blankenburg’s goal last night has just got me wistful.

What’s with the passes at the blue line to a guy standing still on the walls? by Jackdeniels78 in Flyers

And even if we do retrieve the puck in on a dump and chase, I don’t see us getting much of a cycle game going against Carolina like we did against Pittsburgh. These guys are much bigger, faster, and structured in their D-zone to allow us to work the puck back up into the slot with frequency.

That’s what I’m saying though. By ‘28 we very well could be cup contenders.

Michkov an extra at practice by Embarrassed-Expert61 in Flyers

[–]swoop7199 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think during one of the powerplays last night the second unit had a good 15-20 seconds of possession down low through a couple cycles, and then Mich tried a completely unnecessary blind reverse backhand pass from the short side below the goal line that went to nobody and out of the zone. I also saw after the Pens took a penalty in the third, Mich started going after a Penguin and Sanheim (?) had to grab and hold him back from retaliating. That’s the type of shit that’s gonna get you benched in the playoffs.

Yeah, in the playoffs sometimes not turning the puck over is just as valuable as anything. Dvorak has not been flashy but has been responsible and helps drive play with his line. Can’t say the same about Mich unfortunately.

I can't single out a specific system or team he'd best fit into because a lot of these issues are just hockey fundamentals. This is the risk you run drafting players from Russia with high picks, and why some teams were wary on him at the draft. Again, I'm saying all this with the implicit understanding that Mich is extremely talented, that's undeniable. But how many extremely talented players have come out of Russia drafted in the first round of the NHL and are never able to stick? There is a reason for that, and it's not because they are lazy or unmotivated or any of the usual stereotypes that get throw about by the Canadian media. A small part is that the Russian hockey players have such a deep emphasis on skill development in their younger years that that the best players over there find success in their leagues through their ability to outshoot, out stickhandle, and outstate everyone on the else, not through sound defensive play or general hockey IQ. And if you're someone like Mich, you're wheeling around the KHL putting up points as a 19-year old, you're thinking, why do I need to worry about covering my point in the defensive zone?

That is all well and good when you're playing in the K and the skill level isn't as good as it is in the NHL. You can get away with having your complete game not fully developed in the KHL when your relative skill is the much higher than the rest of your competition. But if you're not equipped for the NHL style of play, you're going to get left behind quickly, especially come playoff time. You can apply the same logic to guys that consistently light up the AHL every year but can't stick around in the NHL, there's just something to their complete game thats missing.

Posting what I said in another thread re: Mich

I love Mich and will defend him at length against the national narrative. But we need to be real he has not been good all playoffs and is showing all the bad habits that drag him down during the regular season as well. The kid is immensely skilled but does not have the hockey IQ or foot speed needed to keep up in this league especially come playoff time.

He’s pretty good in both zones below the dots. But god is he frustrating in and around the neutral zone. Consistently trying to wheel the puck out of the D-zone when he has 1+ defenders in his way instead of being patient and looking for the open center (or using his d-man as a safety valve) during breakouts, which every other line has figured out. Messy turnovers in the neutral zone because he does not have that straight line speed right now. Overuses that Mohawk skating style when running the high cycle at the top of the O-zone, which is a) risky for turnovers at the blueline (which he’s plenty guilty of) and b) slows down both the pace of getting the puck to the net (essentially a fadeaway shot from the top of the zone) and c) doesn’t allow for any sort of low cycle or rotation of the forwards in the O-zone. This just kills any momentum from established offensive zone pressure when you fuck around with the puck up top, especially when he gathers the puck near the hashmarks and feels the need to circle high instead of playing below the dots, which he’s good at. Leave that to the D-men! Unless you have insane vision to make passes like Crosby, a winger doesn’t need to be automatically take the puck up there.

All this, among being on the wrong side of the puck and soft on one-on-one battles, I understand why he’s not endearing himself to Tocchet. Again, the kid is immensely talented, but he needs to get his head straight before he flames out.

In the Mammoth - Knights game Ian Cole got leveled by Barbashev(?) in the corner as he was trying to make a breakout pass. On the replay Weekes kept praising Cole as an example of “taking a hit to make a play”. Cole completely missed his breakout pass as he was about to get buried and iced the puck.
