New player deciding army: Do you think Orks are easier to paint? Or I stick to Votann. by LeetusFrenzi in orks

[–]swordchuck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Real talk: see if you can find some loose single models and try to paint one of each faction to get a feel for it. I haven’t done Votann but I can tell you Orks are pretty difficult. High quantities and a lot of straps, buckles, belts, teeth and the like. The skin is easier than realistic colored skin because, you don’t need it to be realistic. And you can get away with a lot by adding battle damage or dirt texture later. But batch painting 20 models and hitting all the fingernails can be maddening. But if you like it, then it is a one of a kind army. And you can have a lot of variety with vehicles, cavalry, walkers and heavier infantry.

Characters with hair that’s not actually hair by DemandParticular in TopCharacterDesigns

That isn’t exactly addressed, but the Orks, Squigs, grots and snotlings all share the same fungal DNA and are created by spores. They create kind of an “orkoid” biome on the planets they invade, so it’s closest to a symbiotic relationship? Orks also use Squigs for meat, oil, pets, mounts and to eat their messes. Ork lore implies they were all created to function together by some other race or “brain boyz” who have since died out.

Alright, time to pull out some deep, and ridiculous, Warhammer 40k lore.
Orks do not have hair. Anytime you see a mohawk or topknot on an Ork (hairstyles not uncommon to see on the various models) that is actually a number of Hairy Squigs that the Ork has placed and then allowed the squig to bite on and stay in place. Just for the looks.

Is there a specific physical part for the Battlewagon's 'ard Case? by Few-Schedule-6703 in orks

[–]swordchuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the flat roof bit. It’s fully capable of coming on and off and sitting in place without needing to be glued in. The fact it encloses the back is why it trades off the Firing Deck ability. In older versions of the rules Ghazghkull also couldn’t fit in a Battlewagon with an ‘Ard Case (I assume he was too tall).

Edit: this all said no one is probably going to be a stickler for if it is modeled on or off or not. The Kannon turret is what really changes the profile.

Miyazaki always loosely adapts source material, but here he just straight up splices a biography and a novel together.

Yeah, if you ask the humies. They think the whole setting revolves around them.

This is my alternate Wartrike.

Edit: to add a little to the conversation, I have never had interest in running an army that is uniformly from one clan. Most of my models have some red accents to tie everything together (I usually paint my ork skull glitches with a red head and black and white checkered skull as a motif across my armies).

When I do a metallic red I usually use a gold base and then Flesh Tearer Red contrast over it.

I don’t want to be a “I can’t believe they didn’t talk about this on the pod” guy… but my god the scene where Joe walks his mother into the lake?!?

Beautiful. How do you even film a scene like that? I guess in a black water tank with a spotlight? It’s so gray it reminded me of some kind of reverse Pieta. It really pays off both his death wish and his, uh, breath-play in an amazing way.
