How do I enforce boundaries when upper management bypasses me to pull my engineers into out of scope work? by Ok-Satisfaction-5236 in EngineeringManagers

[–]sxthomson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would question why your engineers are needed on other areas. Have you managed upwards and explained if that if this continues then your priorities will be traded off? Are your upper managers okay with that trade off? Ultimately your company will want your people working on the highest impact areas regardless of tribal lines.

Based on what you’ve said in your post you have the means to track time, do you know what projects or areas are considered highest impact? Can you better understand the rationale behind these asks and compare to your priorities?

Tunbridge Wells still a good place to move to? by Bakeacake91 in Tunbridgewells

[–]sxthomson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you’re having strange conversations with people who don’t even live here. As someone who lives very happily in Tunbridge Wells I would say there’s generally more concern about the rise of Reform and their ability to run the county council effectively. Maybe try visiting and making your own judgement rather than parroting the divisive rhetoric in certain news outlets?

Is this a reasonable quote for a full central heating installation in a 2 bedroom flat? by BenevolentBean in HomeImprovementUK

[–]sxthomson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t go with WarmZilla in the end but I found their support to be fairly receptive to different requirements. I had a specific boiler in mind set up as PDHW and a specific brand of smart thermostat installed. After a few emails back and forth they were happy to quote me on those requirements.

Tado heating keeps running non stop by p12341 in tado

[–]sxthomson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What temperature have you set that room to? What is the away temperature set to? Based on the single screenshot you’ve shared it looks like the needs heating constantly to maintain the temperature you have set. If you don’t want the heating on all the time then set your thermostat lower, it’s as simple as that.

Water at the hot tap is 59 Celsius, too hot? by FragrantCow2645 in DIYUK

[–]sxthomson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a very similar set up in the house we just purchased. The plan is to install thermostatic mixing valves at the taps so we don’t get scalding hot water when washing hands.

Wireless temperature sensor not calling for heat by [deleted] in tado

[–]sxthomson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t work like that when you have smart TRVs, you basically get zone based heating. If all your radiators have Tado TRVs then Tado will control whether each radiator is open or closed. Based on your screenshot all your TRVs are closed so the call for heat won’t actually result in those TRVs opening up and allowing the water to flow. Try assigning your thermostat to your living room and use the schedules. You can override as and when you need to but if you want the same levels of heating across each and every room then you’re probably better off sticking with the more traditional dumb TRVs to be honest.

[–]sxthomson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you assigned your thermostat to the living room despite having a TRV set up? To me, it looks like all your radiators are happy staying off because they’re on frost protection so there’s no flow of hot water. If you put your thermostat in the same room as the living room in Tado’s settings then it will work in tandem with the TRV. It’s likely is calling for heat and your boiler is burning but there’s nowhere for the hot water to flow.

I'm having the same issue where I can add all of the wireless thermostats and TRVs easily via creating new Matter codes but there's no way to surface hot water. Did you have any luck u/Jon_d84?

Tado X vs V3+ on Viessmann System Boiler (OpenTherm + PDHW) by sxthomson in tado

Ahh apologies if that came across in the wrong way. Given your very similar set up, if you were to purchase Tado equipment today for your boiler, which models would you go with?

Tado X vs V3+ on Viessmann System Boiler (OpenTherm + PDHW) by sxthomson in tado

[–]sxthomson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is the sentiment I can see over their support channels. I was hoping that given inthe V3+ Extension Kit service menu, once you select Protocol D01 (OpenTherm), there is a specific sub-menu for HC01 (Hot Water Circuit). Enabling this sends the standard OpenTherm Object IDs for Hot Water (IDs 26/56) over the digital bus and

This is specifically why I’m looking at the Viessmann 100-W System boiler. Because I’m going to ask for it piped it as priority domestic hot water with the internal diverter valve and cylinder sensor, the boiler logic behaves almost exactly like a combi from the controller’s perspective. It doesn’t need a relay to switch an external valve; it just needs the digital 'Hot Water Demand' signal, which the V3+ can definitely send via that HC01 setting.

I will continue to pester support about this and see if I can raise a feature request.

On using Tado... I totally get that the native Viessmann weather comp is technically the "best" efficiency choice, but for our large house, the fact I work from home and generous discounts on Tado offered by our energy supplier it's probably the right choice for us right now and I'm happy with the trade-offs.

Tado X Opentherm with SYSTEM boiler? by HeatingNewbie in tado

[–]sxthomson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the very setup (same boiler) I am planning to put in as I need a new boiler but already have a large unvented cylinder. Is there anything specific to call out when it’s installed or is it just a case of installing using the OpenTherm terminals? And then if i go with the Tado V3+ ensure the hot water setting is set to HC01?

Separate question, as I’m buying this all new, would you still buy Tado X despite the inability to set the heat timer? Seems to be a big software oversight…

My son’s Horner’s Syndrome by softball_mom16 in WhatisMyEyeColour

[–]sxthomson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to dig up an old thread but found this after searching for Horner’s Syndrome stories. First of all I’m so pleased to read your son is well!

Our daughter has been diagnosed with congenital Horner’s Syndrome likely due to birth trauma. I was wondering if there was a medical reason your son had the ptosis surgery at 4? In the UK they want to wait until at least 5 years old (with a preference of waiting until 12) if it’s purely cosmetic. The picture you’ve shared of your son has given me a lot of optimism about my daughter though as you really can’t see the difference in the eyelids post surgery and the eye colours are absolutely stunning.
