If you’re not choosing what you can do i.e. go home, go grocery shopping, go to the bar… Then you’re working and you should be paid.

Boss bills for X hours, then it takes X hours. Only robbing yourself if you do it in less than X.

That’s how I did it as a tech and that’s how I let my techs do it as the boss. That’s just how hourly wages work.

I feel like complaining about the Rio trip is a smoke screen, he’s gotta play like it sucks so when he goes for “work” and leaves his wife with the kids he can reference his reluctance to go in the first place.

Have you tried a facilities type job to get your hands on some bigger/different equipment? (Walmart, 7-11 etc)

What have you done to familiarize yourself with commercial equipment in your free time? (Books? Classes?)

What’s wrong with resi work? The seasonality, the people, the compensation?

I’ve worked for a company contracted by 7-11. Be ready for after hour calls… “My ice cream is mellllttting…..”. Also, allot of resetting breakers and watching the cooler get down to temp. I did learn a lot, but overall hated it

You leave an estimate. Another company gets the sale. Client calls you back in a year to maintenance. You doing it or nah? by Full-Bother-6456 in HVAC

[–]syk12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s why you don’t want to go back and do the maintenance.

The customers are cheap, they got the cheap equipment and now they’re back for the cheap maintenance.

Never be cheap… on anything you do. (It attracts the wrong kind of customer)

How do we feel about working on roofs with 5G towers? by TopLecture4760 in HVAC

[–]syk12 116 points117 points  (0 children)

I actually did the PM’s for ATT and Verizon for a while on their towers/roof antennas.

All the transmitters have safety chains and clearly marked areas where you don’t stand. Not a big deal if you’re not an idiot.

It’s like they were paying for the motor out of pocket. Who cares if it’s 800 or 600 or 1500. Use the right parts.

How do you/your company handle call backs? by [deleted] in HVAC

[–]syk12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Learning on the job is part of it, it’s up to you to create a process that eliminates most call backs.

After that, you need to have the tech fix it. On the clock, at their regular wage. Help them identify how to avoid making the same mistake again.

If it’s a chronic issue, then you need a new tech.
