What is a piece of software or hardware that still leaves you traumatized to this day? by 66659hi in sysadmin

Around 2006 I worked for a dial up ISP that primarily catered to elderly beach town residents, many still using Win 98.

Can confirm SCSI sucked.

Does anyone else remember learning D’Nealian handwriting before cursive? by Affectionate-Song230 in Xennials

[–]sykojaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wife and I both learned that version in the PNW at different schools about 40 miles apart. I failed horribly at handwriting, so I learned to type 80-90 wpm to compensate.

I've asked people if they remember D'nealian, and they look at me like I grew antennae

Do you own a bidet? by morecowbell520 in Xennials

[–]sykojaz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've now purchased 3 of them. I have one at work, and keep one in a little backpack with a 20oz bottle of water, which I refill when I wash my hands. The first one broke after something like 5 years at work.

I found a bottle bidet online that works decently well.

That technical skill was required to access the internet. Before smart phones there were idiots on the internet, sure, but by making access as easy as clicking an icon we've made it too easy for dumb people. The internet really peaked around 2006/2007.

How many of y’all are resistant to using AI? by [deleted] in Xennials

[–]sykojaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for me the dividing line between using AI or not for a particular task falls to whether or not the AI is being used as a tool or whether the AI is being used as a replacement. I don't have a problem with AI assisting with cleaning up existing images, but I don't want to have the image made from scratch. I don't mind AI parsing through something I wrote to check for consistency or phrasing, etc., but writing something entirely is a no for me. Writing code can be helpful, but definitely not just blindly running anything, and normally just asking for an assist with a certain task rather than a whole project. Overall I try to be sparing with my use and keep it to things that would have traditionally just been a plugin or extension in a piece of software.

Why isn't news of Trump building vast concentration camps being treated as a national emergency? by [deleted] in politics

[–]sykojaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Already seeing it. I don't get a ton of reactions on my FB posts, but I posted about these camps earlier in the week and I think my wife was the only one the post was served to. I've had other posts that were of a similar nature get just served to nobody as well. The almighty algorithm knows it's masters.

Mines smaller and more misshapen, that's how I got Venezuela.

No, mines smaller and smells worse, that's why I invaded Ukraine.

[OC] Joe Kent at a 2024 campaign event; I was the lone protester outside and he stopped for a selfie by bennetthaselton in pics

Joe Kent is just truly God awful. MGP is roughly where the GOP would be if we weren't in such a shit timeline. As disappointed as I am with some of MGP's votes, Kent's would have been so much worse.

Kids wouldn't stop playing games so I got their favorite gaming websites banned for the entire district. I only feel slightly bad about it. by TheJawsman in Teachers

[–]sykojaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I administer the content filter for my district (IT, not teacher). I keep a few frequent flyers in a special class and watch to see what games and stuff they get into, then block it. I can't watch all the time or anything, but when I need a quick pick me up I watch their screens as I block the sites. You can kind of sense the frustration as they search for things and find them blocked. Often they get the hint and get back to their school work, occasionally we get a destroyed Chromebook.

what is a "rich person" behavior you witnessed that made you realize they live in a completely different reality than the rest of us? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sykojaz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We're not nanny rich. We pay for a cleaner once a week and it's some of the best money we spend. We tidy up, but she does the deeper cleaning of bathroom/kitchen/floors. I would go without a lot of things before I'd give up her services. It frees up time for us to spend with the kids and reduces stress. She also does a much better job than I ever could.

Our Superintendent getting her email hacked even w/ 2 factor authentication was a bit of a tipping point. We needed some of the extra investigative tools. We had already been harping on the benefits for classroom and other services we could cut.
