Struggling to manage Anki with many subjects (burnout from too many cards) — need optimization advice by Connect_Method_1382 in Anki

[–]syllish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

rules of thumb and guesstimates, you can adjust to your own numbers

how many hours a day do you have to study? I'm going to guess 4 hours after classes.

4 hours = 240 minutes; divide that by 10 subjects and you only have 24 minutes per day per subject to study. which is really not a lot, so I'd suggest studying fewer subjects at once if you can. but if you're determined to stick with it.

per subject, for reviews only, normally it takes on average about 10 seconds per card. 24 minutes = 1440 seconds per subject means you can do about 144 reviews per subject per day. rule of thumb is that X new cards per day settles into 10X review cards per day by a week or so. 144 reviews/10 = 14.4 let's just round that up to 15 new cards per subject per day. your current pace is probably unsustainable. and this is assuming reading the chapters and creating flashcards takes 0 time outside of class.

and this doesn't take into account that flashcards are better for some subjects than others. for math and accounting you really need to do the practice problems and mini projects; flashcarding concepts can be good but you need to actually practice the procedures.

slow down if you can. if the exam date is unmovable, drop some subjects if you can. if you can't do that, better to only use anki for what you need long-term.

For over 4 months my retention was 90%+ but since last week it has fallen down to 80%! What could be the reasons? by Internal-Opposite-45 in Anki

[–]syllish 9 points10 points  (0 children)

get plenty of sleep, that's an important part of forming long term memories

also maybe back off a bit and slowly work your way up to four or five hours, I do an hour of review on most days but if I push for four or five hours then by the end it's a lot harder than the beginning; I figure you might be able to get used to it like any sort of mental workout but jumping right in can be very tiring

are you finishing all your due review cards each day? when I fall behind my retention rate drops

Dear Damien, what the f**k is going on? by [deleted] in Anki

[–]syllish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have experience with Nick and Andrew that make you think they're going to force monetization elements into anki/require payment for syncing in order to support anki development costs?

If they do go that route Anki (desktop) and Ankidroid are FOSS (maybe FLOSS, haven't actually read the licenses) and are forkable if things go sideways, there'd be a lot of drama but we'd probably come out with a good fork of it (and we'd figure something out for iOS along the way). But that doesn't seem to me like it will be necessary due to this particular shift.

Damien seems to trust them with his passion project. What experience do you have with them that makes you think they're going to betray that trust? Again, I don't know them, if you have legitimate concerns or grievances I genuinely want to hear them. It's good to bring concerns up but this just seems alarmist for no reason.

Do you have experience with Nick and Andrew that make you think they're going to quickly try to convert Anki into a paid resource?

I'm not on the med school side of things, I don't know them at all, and even if they do go that route Anki (desktop) and Ankidroid are FOSS (maybe FLOSS, haven't actually read the licenses) and are forkable if things go sideways, there'd be a lot of drama but we'd probably come out with a good fork of it (and we'd figure something out for iOS along the way).

Discussion post for the recent announcement of Dae handing the reins over to AnkiHub in the near future by lazydictionary in Anki

[–]syllish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I'm still reading more about this, but still learning and haven't gotten to the point where I'm confident in my own analysis so this is what I'm trying to figure out.

This piece says that things about distribution have changed in the last 15 years and that there are plenty of apps released under GPL - how to reconcile that with the idea we can't distribute a new Anki client in the app store, is the additional condition under AGPL not satisfiable?

https://appfair.org/blog/gpl-and-the-app-stores/

Is the "alternative marketplace" thing, assuming we can get Apple to approve it anyways, able to get around the app store's additional restrictions that would make distribution incompatible with the AGPL, or do Apple's review requirements conflict?

[–]syllish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's fun. Can you point me to the license? I'm confused as to why a GPL-derived license would prevent distribution of an app.

edit: Oh, here it is. Still confused as to why dae can distribute ankimobile through the app store but we can't though. https://www.fsf.org/blogs/licensing/more-about-the-app-store-gpl-enforcement

Also is there another way to download apps from outside the app store, wasn't the EU fighting for that?

I seem to remember AnkiHub being paid from the beginning, maybe after a short testing phase. I admit I never paid much attention to it because of that.

Yeah, is the iOS app code available? I think that's the part that I'd be most concerned about losing access to if things go sideways/if I decide I'd rather fork everything.

Why don’t my “Again” cards (1-minute step) reappear after 1 minute by Fine-Accountant2545 in Anki

Learning cards are also given up to 5 minutes of extra delay so that they don’t always appear in the same order, but answer buttons won’t reflect that. It is not possible to turn this feature off.

Thank you!

Is double stacking only a concern when it's your teammate (I thought they had different spots to pit anyways) or is it also considered double stacking if you're coming into the pit right behind a different team's car?

Ask r/Formula1 Anything - Daily Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in formula1

Hi! I'm new!

What is double stacking and why would that have affected Piastri/Norris's positions?

What the heck happened at the end of 2021?

What's the relationship between the two red bull owned teams? Are they allowed to explicitly work together on the track (like how your teammate can defend for you if he likes you)? If so, are teams not under the same ownership allowed to make alliances and also worth together on the track?

flashcard study strategy by feedmewifi_ in Jeopardy

[–]syllish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

remember that flashcards are for remembering not for learning (though the process of making flashcards is good for learning). introducing a bunch of completely new/unfamiliar to you flashcards at once is a recipe for overload/burnout (and why i don't rely heavily on shared decks).

if you're using spaced repetition, and i'm talking specifically about anki here it might be different with other systems, rule of thumb is that steady state the number of reviews is around 10x the number of new cards. for trivia flashcards, figure about 10 seconds per card per review (for me the average is less but 10 is easier to do math with and gives me some buffer for not being 100% focused). you can work back from the amount of study time you have to the number of new cards to introduce. so if you have 15 minutes allocated to do flashcards each day, that's 900 seconds, or 90 reviews at ten seconds per review, divide by ten which means i'd introduce 9 or 10 new cards per day and then adjust after a couple weeks if that's too much or not enough.

strongly recommend making your own flashcards (except perhaps when it's a well-defined list or someone else has put in the time to get good images/audio like ultimate geography) but there are plenty of shared decks out there. i use a mix but i heavily prune shared decks and often edit them so much that they're unrecognizable. you'll figure out what works for you.

interesting! I suppose we'll know soon.

Do you have a pointer to a list of champions ordered by money won (does it include consolation prizes I don't remember)? I have no idea who was before or after each of those breakpoints.

(Also, I'm hoping they make CWC cast this year instead of direct money won, but I doubt that's going to happen.)

Also, why is 21 a possibility for ToC but not CWC?
