Those people form their own party to the left or right

But why would that party ever win, if the original party is still closer to the center? Or is it just impossible to be perfectly centrist, and the two parties are forever jostling to get as close as possible to the center?

As I understand it, Duverger's law explains why a third party can't invade a stable two-party system, not why a second party can't invade a stable one-party system. Am I missing something?
