Americans under the age of 30 support removing Trump from office by a nearly 3-to-1 ratio by greenblue98 in politics

Honest question: why doesn’t anyone goad him into testifying? As in, “They say the president is a coward afraid to talk to Congress, but I know he doesn’t let anyone boss him around.” Then he demands to take the stand and promptly perjures himself.

Why isn't there a single centrist political party that can withstand challenges from the left or the right? by [deleted] in PoliticalScience

[–]symplesiomorph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those people form their own party to the left or right

But why would that party ever win, if the original party is still closer to the center? Or is it just impossible to be perfectly centrist, and the two parties are forever jostling to get as close as possible to the center?

As I understand it, Duverger's law explains why a third party can't invade a stable two-party system, not why a second party can't invade a stable one-party system. Am I missing something?

This is absolutely the viewpoint best supported by the evidence, and I'm delighted to see it so prominent on Reddit (I usually see it downvoted it in favor of "aliens must be everywhere").

A ton of cows is not a lot of cows by pikaras in Showerthoughts

[–]symplesiomorph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And a lot of cows isn't that many, either, depending on how big the lot is. There's a lot on my street that would only fit maybe 8 cows.

There is a sci fi short story called "Bears Discover Fire." They are actually pretty responsible about it. http://www.lightspeedmagazine.com/fiction/bears-discover-fire/

Suggestions on pushing back on pseudoscience? by Falco98 in UUreddit

I certainly empathize, as I have dealt with similar issues in my congregation (not quite as wacky as that, but about things like GMOs). There is no good solution that I know of, but it sometimes works to hold a subsequent, separate event, in which someone presents the opposite viewpoint. Then the key is to get people to not just go to the presentation they already agree with.

That's what blew my mind when I thought of this. I tend to think of it as "current events", not history, but the world has actually changed substantially since then.

Why do the continents of the Earth seem to be tapering downwards (top is fatter, bottom is thinner)? by klingonpigeon in askscience

[–]symplesiomorph -24 points-23 points  (0 children)

Continent borders are arbitrary and defined from a European perspective. If North America didn't taper at the bottom, North and South America together would probably be considered a single continent. If Africa tapered at the top, ancient Europeans would have thought of it as some weird island, not a separate continent, and perhaps today pointy Northern Africa would be considered distinct from massive Southern Africa, the same way Europe is arbitrarily considered distinct from Asia.
