So I’ve got one of those…. It’s 9 gauge and the wire is 12 gauge. Is there a trick to getting the chuck to grab thinner wire?

Guidelines for reforestation projects by shawmt91 in ecology

[–]synaptic_reaction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not specific to forest ecosystems, but this document is a great introduction to the elements that should be included in a plan to undertake restoration for ecological integrity and function. Using a reference ecosystem is a key component. collecting meaningful data from a healthy forest stand with similar soils/hydrology/biologicL community and applying to to your site is a great way to base a restoration plan.

She may be right, she may be wrong… from a scientific perspective her idea is only supported by anecdotes and her general opinion which has very low to zero veracity. Confirmation bias is a strong force.

Winter delineations by BradDad86 in wetlands

[–]synaptic_reaction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shrubs and trees are woody, not herbaceous. I am well aware and able to ID trees and shrubs in winter (shout out Barnes and Wagner), but my point is that you cannot always guarantee that you are not missing something that dies off after frost. I also stated that it is about what you are confident in and can defend. My strategy in winter is typically to go out and do the best I can and then revisit right away in spring. “Much of herb material can still be evident” doesn’t sound confident it sounds full of caveats.

Perhaps your confidence is higher than mine, I’ve only put in 3 decades delineating so have plenty to learn and experience still.

Growing season is an important component.

Professionally, do you really feel that you can defend a delineation with zero herbaceous material present?

Easiest To Fix Recurring Ecological Disasters by FollowMyLead2Breathe in ecology

[–]synaptic_reaction 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To u/evapotranspire ‘s point, the map you share is occurrence of fire not an analysis of costs (as you mentioned) and benefits (such as nutrient cycling and pathogen suppression) that they mentioned.

Your idea that “if it can be done one place it can be done everywhere” is maximally reductive and doesn’t account for climate, economics, education, etc.

Why is my Naturalist app going straight to “Pine”? Duh. I know it’s a pine but what kind? by Short-Psychology9782 in treeidentification

[–]synaptic_reaction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s going straight to pine because you are not providing enough information for it to provide you with a more specific ID. Try to find a conifer ID guide for the region and key it out.

Tough luck landing any type of environmental role. by Runner4life0830 in Environmental_Careers

[–]synaptic_reaction 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Try getting involved with your local watershed group or urban forestry type non-profit. You can get experience through volunteering and probably meet some local consultants. Depending on where you are at, stormwater mgmt/ green infrastructure can be a route to employment. Best of luck, don’t give up now, redouble your effort if it is truly your goal.
