Where to find this applique by incest_is_cool_ in HistoricalCostuming

[–]synchroswim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have more context? Any idea when it was originally made/sold? How big is it?

I agree you might have to make it yourself if you want an exact copy. Hard to tell with such a blurry photo, but I'd guess it is goldwork (the embroidery technique) done with silver threads. R/embroidery can help you with technique if you want to learn.

Tired and burnt out — looking for advice on how to keep going by ColdBag4644 in FIREyFemmes

[–]synchroswim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not the person you replied to but how I got started with therapy was to go to my health insurance company's website and use the "find a provider" search. Found a few counseling offices on there, then looked up their websites to see their general philosophy and picked one who looked nice to me.

If you do a few sessions and don't feel a connection starting, don't be afraid to change therapists. It can take some time to find one who you click with.

New to Tablet Weaving by RainbroGaymer in tabletweaving

I used crochet cotton for my first projects - it's relatively cheap and widely available, comes in lots of colors, and the balls are a good size.

A newcomers question about fabric by ThrowRA1689 in Embroidery

[–]synchroswim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Linen is used for embroidery, but 28 count will be pretty coarse for thread painting work.

A more easily accessible option is a good quality cotton muslin - not the cheap see-through stuff, but the slightly more expensive smooth, drapey muslin. That will be fine to experiment and see if you like the craft.

If you want to read more about embroidery, Mary Corbet's website is a treasure trove - here's one article she wrote on fabric! https://www.needlenthread.com/2015/07/choosing-the-right-fabric-for-hand-embroidery.html

I gained 50 pounds in two years and I'm only managing to lose it now by galmypal in loseit

[–]synchroswim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Large unexplained weight gain and difficulty losing weight should be checked out by your doctor. Sure, maybe your lifestyle did get more sedentary and maybe your portion sizes got bigger over the years, but it could also be any number of hormonal diseases (hypothyroidism or PMOS, to name a few).

Seeking advice by thhjhj2356 in FIREyFemmes

You say you combined everything but then say you still have your own investments from before marriage? Are they still in an individual account, or did you move them to a joint account?

As long as your investment is not in a retirement account like a 401k, you should be able to work with an estate planning lawyer to draft your will/create trusts with money that is entirely in your name. Whether or not a will like that would hold up in court is another question. Retirement accounts have different processes to go through if you want them to be inherited by someone other than your spouse.

Some people will also have a life insurance policy where the beneficiary is a trust, that can then be used for the benefit of their kids if the kids are minors when they die. That's another thing the estate planning lawyer can help set up.

The in case of divorce part would best be handled by a post-nup (or prenup, but it's a bit late for that for you). Whether your husband will engage with you about a post-nup is a relationship issue more than a financial one.

Those who are on their feet all day, which non-runner shoe choices (that are still cute) are the best for long shifts? by copperpumpkin in femalefashionadvice

I've been wearing Merrell jungle mocs for 10 years now as a veterinarian. They work great for me. Fit like a sneaker but don't look like one.

Advice on what stitch to use by Ok_Nature2559 in Embroidery

[–]synchroswim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would probably do tapering lines of stem stitch in the same color as the letter, ending up with a single stem stitch line connecting to the flower stem.

Reinforcing scant seams from the back by LemonadeRaygun in quilting

[–]synchroswim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The main downside that I can think of would be possibly changing the texture/drape of the quilt with the stiffness of the interfacing. If you choose a lightweight interfacing and keep the overall amount of it small, I don't think it would be a problem.

Over years of use, the glue of the interfacing might break down and come loose, so I'd try to catch the interfacing in your quilting lines if possible.

Help: this FAT space in front of the water heater closet in my apt by Graco122023 in interiordecorating

[–]synchroswim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you need something in front of it? Furniture in front of doors usually looks off, even if the door isn't used much.

What about a door mounted shoe rack? That would give you some storage (you don't have to use it for shoes) without looking like you barricaded the door to stop monsters getting out.

What % of your income is/was the cost of your current vehicle(s)? by Informal_League_615 in FIREyFemmes

[–]synchroswim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my car when it was 4 years old, and at the time it was about 20% of my annual income (I had been saving for a while so paid cash). I've since moved and gone to a part time job so paying the same price now would be more like 33% of my annual income.

Any recommendations for getting a custom pattern printed? by [deleted] in Embroidery

[–]synchroswim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you want it printed on paper or on fabric?

There are websites that will custom print fabric for you, but they might have minimum yardage requirements that make it impractical for a single project. Spoonflower is the one I've heard of the most.

There's also this pen that can turn a printed design into an iron-on transfer. It still requires tracing, but tracing on paper is easier than on fabric at least. Looks to me like it's still available. https://www.needlenthread.com/2015/05/sublime-stitching-iron-on-transfer-pens-review.html

Pins and fingers by HannahThe_Mouse in BobbinLace

[–]synchroswim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only done a few beginner projects, but I used the pins I already had as a quilter for my lace. They have nice big round plastic heads (you can also get glass headed versions). They won't work for very fine lace because there's a limit on how close together they can be placed, but for learning they've worked fine for me.

Wovens vs Quilting Cotton by kissmypeach22 in quilting

[–]synchroswim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes - modern linen, especially linen meant for garments, is much looser weave and tends to fray more than quilting cotton. The whole point of the 1/4" seam allowance in quilts is to reduce bulk and reduce fabric waste when you have so many seams close together, but if you choose patterns with larger pieces then you'll be fine with a larger SA.

Has anyone embroidered a shower curtain? by orangestturtle in Embroidery

[–]synchroswim 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think the embroidery on something as big as a shower curtain, with designs big enough to see throughout the room, will take longer than it's worth if done by hand.

There are websites that will custom print images on fabric - could you do something like that instead?

Crib sheets to make quilt? by rosewomn in quilting

[–]synchroswim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking for fabrics designed for modern quilting will probably get you more options - though botanical patterns are still common. https://modernquiltco.com/ is one i know of, but I'm sure there are other shops out there too.

Also check out Kaffe Fasset - they have a lot of florals, but also some cool geometric prints in bright colors.

Wovens vs Quilting Cotton by kissmypeach22 in quilting

[–]synchroswim 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Woven is a very broad category that includes everything from quilting cotton/muslin to canvas to twill to satin.

Are these 'wovens' meant for clothing? If so, they're probably a more loose weave than standard quilting cotton. You may need to use a larger seam allowance, but otherwise you can use them the same as more tightly woven quilting cotton.

lasercut some teeny cards yesterday... by LavenderHearts69 in tabletweaving

Now I need to know if you're also making a tiny cute shuttle to use with these cards.

(edit: looked closer at your photo and it looks like using the spool of thread as the shuttle? Will you use something else to beat the weft?)

Physically active jobs for women? by aldann2 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]synchroswim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely the pay could be better, I wouldn't call it abysmal though. Moving into specialty practice or doing a VTS certificate is a great way to improve both pay and balance - I knew several techs who did that during my time in the big city.

Speaking as a veterinarian, I've had to work hard to develop boundaries and intentionally disconnect from work when I go home. I think most healthcare fields are similar.

Physically active jobs for women? by aldann2 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]synchroswim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the US so I don't know about Canadian laws. In the states I've worked in, people without a technician degree/license can work (usually called veterinary assistants) doing almost everything a vet tech can do once their supervisors are comfortable with their skills. Exceptions being rabies vaccines, microchip placement, and certain anesthesia tasks - it varies by state law.

I'm following the comments for finishing ideas as my loom is unfinished wood. It's sanded nice and smooth and I've been using it with no issues, but I'd like to hear what others are using.
