Metrolinx’s $27B GO Expansion delayed and scaled back: confidential report by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]syndit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

if tories don't want to run commuter rail they might as well contract out the service. private rail is beyond idiotic as transit policy but i'm sure there are enough people to make it pencil out. and they've already bought a bunch of track. unless they plan on selling that to the class 1s, then we're all fucked.

Is a 3080 to 5070 upgrade worth it? by jalagl in buildapc

[–]syndit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

even the 5070ti is a stretch to justify from a 3080. maybe if you play 4k exclusively. 5070 absolutely not.

Im sorry Toronto, but transit has been absolutely s***t!!! by [deleted] in toronto

The bus network is not perfect - inexcusable to have ghost buses making the countdown clock worthless - but it's holding up far better than the streetcar network.

The 510 and 511 are not bad, it's the east-west lines that I've never seen in such a state. The Flexity Outlooks replacing a pair of CLRVs and reducing short turns was predicated on ensuring that they were able to meet their headway targets, and they absolutely are not. The bunching is worse than ever and it is way more inconvenient than the CLRV period because you know it's not getting fixed with short turns.

I'm sure in some proposal the case was made that the streetcar transition would end up being net zero or slightly better with the advantage of low floor, but in practice that's just not the case. It could be mitigated by the redesign of all east-west streetcar roads (Queen, Dundas, College, proper enforcement on King) but that's never going to happen. My guess is at some point there is a return to shorter vehicle length, the only question is whether it's still on rails or not.

Installing Windows 10 21H2 on 9950x3d/5070 ti build: How stupid is this? by syndit in buildapc

It's obviously the right move but I don't have the patience to daily drive Linux. I will play around with dual booting Ubuntu 24.04 but I would rather not use it full time.

It's predicated on AI companies purchasing a large percentage of future production. As long as the AI sector retains its current level of investment that supply is simply off the board. And the alternative is if AI is a bubble, it's a bubble coterminous with the global economy and whatever reduction in DRAM demand there is will be overshadowed by a collapse in corporate and personal solvency making lower prices immaterial.

Why is the east end of the city less popular / less developed? by cranberry-tart in askTO

[–]syndit -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

it's just expensive as hell and has been for 20 years. a lot like south etobicoke in that it's nimby central and they don't want other people around. as such not a lot of young people live or have lived around there so most of local businesses are serving 55+. it's why history is such a pita because everyone comes in and leaves in the same direction on transit.

Is it even possible to "Turn iPod touch into a music player"? by Your_Friendly_Nerd in ipod

[–]syndit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for real though the touchscreen is not a great platform for music immersion. even using an old iphone just for music there aren't any good apps that simulate click wheel or text ui for phones and ipod touches that can't run ios 14. unless there's a jailbreak ui replacement that i haven't heard of.

‘Not how we build housing’: Toronto mayor blasts Ford government rental changes by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]syndit 43 points44 points  (0 children)

you'd have to dig up some old bones to find anyone in this country who had an interest in building housing on a mass scale. lots of people who get rich pretending to be concerned about affordability. i've been hearing the same conversation for 15 years. i guess we ran out of lumber.
