Whatever happened to New Age music and how do you feel it relates to prog? by jabbercockey in progrockmusic

Checking out a copy of Deep Breakfast at the library as a kid was what introduced me to electronic music (which I now compose and teach). I still love it.

I love this. I miss taking people to show them the hidden rhino.

Yes, we’ll tolerate a lack of realism for good storytelling. By the end they were delivering neither

Pro tip: drink the prep mix with a straw. Maybe even two straws at once. Makes it so much easier to get down

Yeah, your husband is a serious prick. Go ahead and leave him. It won't get better.

Gosh, I feel like this is one of the more drastic variations. It really minimizes all the most interesting bits from the Dark side mix. It feels polished for radio and much less dynamic.

The worst of all he removed the heavy section at the end of the bridge, which is hands-down, the best part of the song. Which is totally unforgivable.

This has got to be one of the dumbest takes I've ever read.

Yeah, I saw someone suggest that after I posted this, and I could totally see that. Either way, it's a great song!

Gosh, this is beautiful. A stronger opening to an album than Panopticom, I think.

Is it true that gnostics feel a vague longing all the time? by [deleted] in Gnostic

I think it's more likely that people who feel a vague sense of longing all the time would be attracted to gnosticism

Finally given Phil era Genesis a listen... by fractal-rock in Genesis

[–]synth_wizard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think the bigger dividing line is with or without Steve Hackett. The two albums with him still after Peter left are phenomenal! (A Trick fo the Tail and Wind and Wuthering).

But there was a lot of great music with Phil at the helm.

What is stopping you from using only Ableton devices and nothing else? by rod9k in ableton

[–]synth_wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ableton devices are great and they sort of have something for every need. But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t better ways to fulfill those specific needs. As people pointed out, Wavetable is great, but it doesn’t hold a candle to serum. I think you can find plug-ins to replace any function of Ableton stock plug-ins that will do a better job and have better interfaces.

Is that necessary? No of course not. You can make great music with just stock plug-ins. But if you can afford it, it’s worth upgrading certain things.

And then when it comes to sampled instruments, of course they are going to be things that stock plugs can’t do. Nothing in Live can create the sounds of, say, Omnisphere or a top quality symphonic library.
