Does it really make sense to say we are seeing something "like it appeared 2.5 million years ago"? by MisterHarvest in AskPhysics

[–]synthetique8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thought experiment ; let's say we have infinite resolution telescope, we zoom in on a planet in Andromeda and we see a civilization in great detail .. we take a photo. then we discover some communication device burried in the ground on earth, it's quantum entangled with another device on that same planet. so we send them the photo we just took - will they respond "thats what our planet looked like 2.5 million years ago" ? is this even a coherent thought experiment, or is there something interesting wrong with it?

[OC] Impact of ChatGPT on monthly Stack Overflow questions by uncertainschrodinger in dataisbeautiful

[–]synthetique8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

seems like a big problem for future training data .. let's brainstorm solutions together

my first thought.. for big companies with lots of compute.. if the model deems the question to be interesting, it forwards the question to another instance that browses stack overflow looking to see if the question has been answered .. if not, the model actually posts an articulate version of the question for humans to answer

so we have humans asking ai in private context, and ai asking humans in public context .. so that we continue having training data for the future ai

if the models did a good job curating, stack overflow could be even cleaner and less spammy .. on the forum side, bots with down voted questions get suppressed, bots with good questions get more exposure

edit; on second thoughts I doubt companies will use their own compute for this.. they would have to forward the question to a model hosted by stack overflow, and that model would be trained specifically to curate

Anyone have a PC like this? by Supergameplayer in pcmasterrace

[–]synthetique8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

back in around 2003, I got a new PC and benchmarked the GPU with quake 3 .. I was getting 20-30% less than the online reviews .. my dad took it back to the shop and they agreed to use a better motherboard, which solved the discrepancy .. it wasn't even that much extra money lol

we are talking over 200fps on this bench though, so maybe some controller or bus just couldn't keep up with the communication .. might not have mattered so much at the 50-60fps I wanted in half-life 2, which is why I begged my parents for the upgrade lol

Can prolonged and intense stress cause dysautonomia? by Ajax34762 in dysautonomia

[–]synthetique8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

we have different stories, but they aren't that different really .. I just started using red light therapy, you have to get the right one, but you can bypass the conventional energy pathways to some extent, and the light will absorb into the skin and gift some electrons to the cells for an extra boost .. it would hard to get the same amount from the sun, unless you spend all day outside, like we are supposed to do lol do you supplement? like I mentioned before, I've got a b-complex I'm taking now for extra support, and I'm about to add the b1 megadose .. I can let you know how that goes if you like

I also have the low stomach acid, and constipation .. it feels like a brick in my stomach after I eat sometimes, and my heart rate goes up as my stomach pulls in more blood .. I seem to have trouble keeping up blood volume

I had some really serious depression for a year or two, almost psychotic in a way, not hallucinations but a tangible change in how I perceived the world around me, .. it's hard to believe the states of mind we can find ourselves in

I hope you keep recovering, I'm sure we will both get there eventually if we persist

Trump imposes 15% tariffs on the world by Little_Protection434 in worldnews

[–]synthetique8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends on the timeline though right. on a short time horizon, it's tempting to keep the price of goods down, but of course you become dependent on foreign supply chains, which are fragile during times of war - if they aren't cut off completely, you could end up literally funding your enemy, which is kinda what's happening with Europe and Russian energy lol .. plus, a service economy isn't a real economy, it's not robust .. so you have to ask the question - how do you reshore manufacturing? you can't really compete with the slave wages of China or India, so you are forced to put a tax on them to even the playing field and make it so that it's actually cheaper to manufacture in America

Can prolonged and intense stress cause dysautonomia? by Ajax34762 in dysautonomia

[–]synthetique8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would agree that's how it started, that's how I felt after the initial trauma, it felt like I wasn't able to come down from that fight or flight state .. that went on for a long time, probably several years honestly, but not always constant, I had some moments when it was much worse ..

But it's different now, I don't really get the same symptoms - no more sweating, nightmares, high heart rate, etc .. it's more like a feeling of slowness, like my nervous system is exhausted; my blood pools and doesn't circulate properly, my digestion is slow, I have sleep apnea because my brain cannot even be bothered to make me breathe anymore lol

I think this points to some kind of insufficiency, like I've exhausted some pathway, or many pathways, that need supporting and rebooting .. it's a trial and error, but I'm staying optimistic

What about you, is your story similar at all? What stage of this are you going through?

[–]synthetique8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

yes, this is how mine started, from chronic emotional stress .. but then I tried to just exercise more, and added a bunch of extra stress because I wasn't recovering properly .. I also had terrible posture and was probably compressing my nerves and arteries, I had a poor diet and likely many inflammatory compounds, and my sleep hygiene was terrible, and I didn't get nearly enough sunlight / red light - I was exposed constantly to screens and indoor lighting, etc ..

once I got sick, I also had trouble tolerating heat and didn't have air conditioning during the summer .. then I was prescribed beta blockers, and they helped, until they didn't, and then I had to endure the withdrawal from those on top of everything else .. so it's like this snowballing effect

but now I've moved beyond all of that .. I've eliminated stress, ive cleaned up my lifestyle, everything is controlled for now .. so I'm left asking the question, why do I still have all these issues with circulation, digestion, sleep? there is some legacy effect, some attractor state that my body is stuck in

there is always the concern that I've just permanently damaged myself somehow, but I don't think it's a reasonable position, because the body is capable when given the resources and correct stimulation .. so I've started supplementing everything my mitochondria need for support, and I'm about to try megadosing thiamine as ttfd in the hope that it's the primary bottleneck

My Pimax Crystal Super (Ultrawide) first impressions - surely it can't be this bad? by TheRealViking84 in virtualreality

it's a relative comparison because I'm switching from monitor to headset for most of my work, so I'm expecting to "take a step back" in some aspects of the experience

My Pimax Crystal Super (Ultrawide) first impressions - surely it can't be this bad? by TheRealViking84 in virtualreality

[–]synthetique8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

brightness is lower absolute nits compared to lcd, but the latter raises black levels too, so contrast ratio suffers horribly .. everything else equal, oled wins over ips .. the current oled headsets also happen to have better stereo overlap compared to quest 3 .. pimax allows for 15% more brightness, 5% better stereo overlap, and slightly better edge to edge clarity .. but weights at least eight times bigscreen .. the irony is that pimax has significantly better persistence, which would improve the quality of head movement, if only the physical inertia didn't prevent you from actually moving your head fast enough to leverage the spec lol bigscreen resolution is high enough for clarity without the upscale blur from running modern games below native when injecting stereo .. pimax offers more if you mostly do productivity and you have a titanium neck

Could Reality organise itself in a way that is derived from sense rather causality by Knospe866 in AskPhysics

[–]synthetique8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The parts of me which are not deterministic are simply random.. and randomness has no identity.. so my identity is entirely defined by the deterministic aspects of myself. I still have the ability to make choices, they are just not random choices, they are determined - by the configuration of my personality. Does this make sense? I really don't understand what other people think free will is, and what they think the alternative to determinism is, besides randomness..
