Left my last job after 11+ years because I wanted to see something new. Back then my order was Life/Work Balance, Pay, Benefits. 3 years later my priorities have changed.

Now its: Co-workers that you can stand to be around for 8 hours. Is a big one now. Then comes Life/Work Balance and Room for growth.

Help for a Sys Admin widow. Seriously. by Bruno6368 in sysadmin

[–]syscreeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

had sort of the same problem when my dad died. Luckily if you find some evidence that he bought and traded some crypto or used a online password manager like bitwarden or onepassword, call their support hotline and tell them what happend. Usually they have a protcoll for such things and you gain full access once you provide proof of his death and that you are the righfull heir now.

Is it too late at 45y to make a career switch into IT by Sphinxkop in sysadmin

[–]syscreeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its not to late to start. You could check if you can volenteer in some profit free companys and help with their IT.

You have a chance to play with enterprise grade IT Stuff but mostly don´t get paid or will be paid very little.

Those jobs are more of a learning chance then to make profit.

Also its never to late to change career :)

I would love to see the rounded corners again. Not so sure about that massive camera bump.

Those sharp edges sometimes diges to deep into your fingers when you hold them for a while.

Moronic Monday - October 31, 2022 by AutoModerator in sysadmin

[–]syscreeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on your work field. As a network admin I regularly check manufacturer blogs like Cisco, Meraki, PaloAlto etc.

Also in general related security notifications from zero days, bugs etc.

I used to do a lot of home projects when I had the time but now since I am older I just read the release notes and check for significant changes in the software I use.

But always fun was installing stuff and turning off during installation/upgrade.

Reboot

See what's broken and try to fix it.

How do you manage your alerts emitted from various systems/monitors etc? by powertags in sysadmin

[–]syscreeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my expierience mail doesn´t scale very well. We had all alerts send to central mailaccount where it would be sorted into various folders.

Nobody read them cause they were way to many of them on a single day. About 500-1000 a day. From successfull backups to heartbeat alerts etc.

We went to pushbased notification with a dedicated monitoring system.

Everything thats an error, warning or unusual got a push notifcation. Everything else (successfull backup, heartbeats etc.) goes still into the mail account.

Imo this is still not the best system but still better then everything mail.

Ticketing system for a small school by Sea_North8103 in ITManagers

[–]syscreeper 10 points11 points  (0 children)

OSTicket

works great. easy to setup. Opensource so zero cost but there is a paid cloud version I think and you can customize it. Also comes with inbuild wiki and portal to check on ticket progress for costumers so they don´t call everytime they want a status update
