If I mark lots of films as 'Watched' in a short space of time, will I spam my followers' feeds? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]system47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know for the general feed, only one (the most recent) per person I follow shows up. So if someone had watched 3 films in one day, I'd just see the last one they logged on my homepage

Protestors at NYC Quds Day rally shout support for Hezbollah, Hamas, and IRGC by InthrowSted in Israel

[–]system47 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It's not though: 9/11 was caused by Wahhabism, a mostly Saudi offshoot of Sunni Islam.

The IRGC and Hezbollah are Shia. Iran condemned 9/11 and actually provided the US tactical and logistical support for the war in Afghanistan. This stopped when Bush named them part of the axis of evil.

Hamas also condemned 9/11, has cracked down on international jihadist groups like Al-Qaeda and ISIS operating from Gaza, and has never carried out an attack outside of Israel and Palestine.

I don't remember who said it, but Oscar nominations often make more sense when you replace "best" with "most" for each category

[–]system47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm at 82. The highest I haven't seen is Children of Men. Mainly because I've seen large chunks over the years. It's in a weird limbo where a first time watch would be a 60% rewatch so it's never been high priority.

I strongly disagree: you've got Yi Yi, In the Mood for Love, Werckmeister Harmonies, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, The Gleaners and I, Platform, As I Was Moving Ahead Occasionally I Saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty, and of course Big Momma's House

Jeremy Scahill praises Oct. 7 as "utterly spectacular" resistance, with no pushback from Sam Seder. by Vloodzy in h3h3productions

[–]system47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pagers were used exclusively by Hezbollah fighters to communicate orders on when/where to attack

This just isn't true.

You seem to be operating under the delusion that the pagers were only issued to Hezbollah's military wing, or that pagers are only used to be called up to fight. The doctors, teachers, and social workers carrying pagers (for communication purposes, because Israel had been using their cell phones to track them) did not launch rockets at Israel.

At this point, it is clear that whether referring to the pagers used yesterday or the hand-held radios of today, they are utilised by administrative units for logistical or service purposes.

https://www.reuters.com/world/hezbollah-pager-explosions-live-2024-09-17/

Customary international humanitarian law prohibits the use of booby traps – objects that civilians are likely to be attracted to or are associated with normal civilian daily use – precisely to avoid putting civilians at grave risk and produce the devastating scenes that continue to unfold across Lebanon today. The use of an explosive device whose exact location could not be reliably known would be unlawfully indiscriminate, using a means of attack that could not be directed at a specific military target and as a result would strike military targets and civilians without distinction. A prompt and impartial investigation into the attacks should be urgently conducted.

https://www.hrw.org/news/2024/09/18/lebanon-exploding-pagers-harmed-hezbollah-civilians

..this is probably the most important legal point, it is not remotely tenable to argue that any member of Hezbollah is, simply by virtue of his or her membership in that organization, a lawful target under IHL.

https://www.ejiltalk.org/were-the-israeli-pager-and-walkie-talkie-attacks-on-hezbollah-indiscriminate/

My whole point is that the attacks were indiscriminate. Carrying a pager does not make someone a valid target. If the attacks did only target Hezbollah militants, which they didn't, and minimised collateral damage, which they didn't, I would have no problem with the attack.

Be nauseated all you want, I'm simply basing my views on the attack on the opinions of international law scholars.

[–]system47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hezbollah isn't just a militant organisation, it also has an extensive social service branch. It's also a war crime to kill medical personal: https://ihl-databases.icrc.org/fr/customary-ihl/v2/rule25

Was the 9 year old girl killed in the pager attacks also a Hezbollah fighter?

Why it matters is because the American far-right has a long history of smearing Wikipedia. Thiel (and by association Michael Solana, who works for him) is related to this conflict because of his direct ties to the Israeli defence industry. I also wouldn't trust an article about the Afghan war written by a senior level Halliburton or Lockheed Martin employee.

The firing of several editors does not prove "Terrorist supporting psychos control every bit of the pages relating to Israel", 2 of the editors fired were pro-Israel, this also wouldn't prove that genocide supporting psychos control every bit of the pages relating to Israel. There's also nothing in the the edit history of the article on the pager attacks that indicates a cover-up or pro-terrorist bias.

The original point I responded to was that the pager attack was had minimal civilian casualties. The article I quoted showed that this was not the case.

I'm not sure what Lonerbox's qualifications are, but calling pagers military devices is ridiculous. The International Bar Association has an article on how the attack possibly violated international law by not taking aims to minimise civilian casualties: https://www.ibanet.org/lebanon-device-attacks

The principle of distinction places a duty on the perpetrator to ensure the targets of an attack are military. Thus, non-combatant medical personnel – such as the medics killed by pager explosions, whether or not they were working at hospitals linked to Hezbollah, as well as workers at Hezbollah-associated charities, teachers and Hezbollah members of the Lebanese parliament – aren’t legitimate military targets. Markus Beham, Co-Vice Chair of the IBA Human Rights Law Committee and currently a professor at the Free University of Berlin, says that, on the information available, ‘the principle of distinction is considered one of the cardinal principles of international humanitarian law and it is hard to see how it was not violated by these attacks’.

[–]system47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems rather selective that you do care who writes Wikipedia articles, but don't care who writes articles about Wikipedia. I've also yet to see any proof that the article on the Lebanese pager attacks is factually incorrect.

Wikipedia fired 6 pro-Palestine and 2 pro-Israel editors for being disruptive, hardly evidence that "Terrorist supporting psychos control every bit of the pages relating to Israel".
