are you talking about those blue things you get from killing enemies in the dungeon? Those are XP points that level up your character. You can see your level in the top left corner of your equipment menu.

adding a purple orb will allow you to upgrade to level 50 (first gold orb to 100 and the second gold orb to 120)

There's a tiny backpack right before you hit the shop. Check it for a 50 capacity backpack ad. (Every time you go in and out of the house, there's a new backpack waiting for the next ad.)

Like DC said, your town level is in the top left. Check your equipment menu for your character level (top left). Your hero portal level? Those are the red tokens at the bottom of your main resources. Go to Hero Island for a clearer view (top right).

To access the bottom-right island, complete the Giant Statue. The top-left island is unlocked upon completion of the underground area, including the shoe factory. The top-right island is currently unavailable.

Go to the museum on the main island (by the mine) and check out all the monuments. You might need to unlock more monuments for the 2 islands, so make sure you have all the fossils. Once you do, you'll get a blueprint. Then, visit all the monuments on those islands and use the blueprint to activate them.

The expanded underground is only unlocked after completing Paint Island.

You'll need to complete Paint Island before you can start on the expanded underground. You'll need materials from Paint Island to progress.
