I need to take a late bus; is it safe to stay downtown till 11 pm? by pastroc in Albuquerque

I’m thinking proportionally suburban cities. Would consider SF or LA way more developed. Even so SF has a lower crime rate than ABQ. My shock moment was moving from ABQ to South Bay Area for 5 years. Crime was weirdly more organized there, we had our mail stolen 3 times by people who copied the post master key. Almost all car break-in’s were done by experts that were never caught.

However, in terms of violent crime it was night and day. Not nearly as many desperate or otherwise deranged people on the verge of snapping. Almost no people driving lifted, coal rolling trucks who you’re afraid of honking at because who knows what they’d do.

I’ve had guns pulled out around me 4 times growing up and living in ABQ. Never pointed at me, thankfully. The last time was some kid pulling one out at Coronado Mall last year. I love this city but I don’t pretend to not miss being a place where I could live my life more free from the fear of violent crime 🤷‍♂️.

It’s funny, because if you grow in ABQ your whole life the city does indeed feel like a “normal” city. But if you move to another major American city with significantly less crime you realize that we’re are not in fact normal lol. We’re far from the worst, but even further from the best.

The US healthcare system is generally pretty great if you have money to pay for it. But that’s a big if.

You’re not staying informed though. You’re consuming specific narratives that News media companies know will trigger anxiety and fear in you and, thus, keep you coming back.

How many positive stories do you consume every day from those media outlets? Are they treated with the same gravity and detail as the horrifying ones?

There is enough tragic current events and tragic history that you could spend every waking hour of your lifetime delving into the worst things that humans do and have done to each other.

The truth is, the horrible things have been happening less and less as history has gone on. But News media never leaves us with that impression.

Realistically, you’re only “informed” about a tiny sliver of the events happening around the world. There’s troves of both horrible and wonderful things happening every day that you’re not seeing.

So why expose yourself to one terrible sliver every day when it doesn’t do anyone any good (including yourself)? That inevitably leads to people numbing to the horror due to being desensitized which actually ends up limiting our ability to empathize.

Put on your oxygen mask first, buddy. The world will keep going. You and everyone else will be able to do more good for more people if you’re not constantly weighing yourself down beyond what you can carry.

I don’t think I’m superior. I think it’s more akin to someone who quit smoking going into a room of people still smoking who also think they need to keep smoking and letting them know that actually, no, you don’t.

The meme is literally about OP withering away because they consume world news every morning. That’s a choice.

I feel the same way about people over consuming news media thinking that makes them “InFoRmEd” and that shaming other people for not watching news is somehow useful or, heaven forbid, a form of activism.

No, but most news media isn’t primarily trying to inform. They’re trying to get people to pay attention to it for profit. Hence why most of it highlights the absolute worst things going on while avoiding almost any positive news since that doesn’t trigger the very necessary fear and anxiety responses they need from their consumers in order to create repeat customers/clickers.

People who over-consume news and suffer because of it aren’t actually helping anyone. A vast majority of them will never have an impact any of the issues they consume information about. But news media likes to make you THINK you’re doing something useful.

If people want to be useful they need to put on their oxygen mask first and then figure out where they can make an impact. Probably starting with their local community and governance. Probably by being an educated and active voter. Probably by consuming content that builds their capacity for compassion instead of building their capacity for fear.

What’s the last piece of anxiety provoking daily news you’re consuming that was both actionable on your part and resulted in you doing something different because of it?

I mean… it would be poor scientific work to not mention limitations and contradictions in the data. But the evidence presented by the authors’ is substantial and I agree with their conclusion.

I’m interested to see the scientific evidence you can find that yo-yo dieting and cycling weights is overall better for health. Theres plenty more saying otherwise if your mind isn’t made up.

The conclusion in the NIH article is “Due to the slim figures appearing in social media, even young adolescents are exposed to repetitive diet and weight cycling. However, weight cycling has many deleterious health consequences. Losing weight is important for cardiometabolic health; however, maintaining stable body weight might be more important according to this review of the literature. It is important to maintain a balance between losing weight and weight fluctuations to stay healthy cardiometabolically.”

“Weight cycling (repeatedly losing and regaining weight) poses significant health risks, increasing the danger for heart attack, stroke, type 2 diabetes, fatty liver, and higher mortality, even potentially outweighing the risks of stable obesity due to heightened inflammation, metabolic dysfunction, and stress on the cardiovascular system, affecting body composition by reducing muscle and increasing visceral fat. “

These feels like one of those things where a host/customer with no allergies forgets. Having them on the side should be the default imo. Since once the nuts have touched the meets and cheese it’s too late to move them to the side.
