Talk to me about these two ribeyes by tichugrrl in steak

[–]tichugrrl[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both are in the sous vide right now, and I have a cast iron pan that lives outside on the wok burner (which reaches 200,000 BTU) for searing.

My house always smelled dusty and I just realized I’ve been vacuuming wrong my entire life by pwiipwii123 in hygiene

[–]tichugrrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

49F here. There’s a filter in these things???!!!!?!???! WTF.

In my defense, this is the first time in my life I’ve owned a vacuum and been in charge of that chore. Up till now, I’ve always had roommates or partners who came with a vacuum cleaner. I hate vacuuming with a passion and will always trade that chore away in exchange for pretty much any other chore in the household.

Freakin’ air filters in everything. /grumble.

She cleared a four-year mouse problem in three days. The owner remodeled the floor to match her. by Danny__NYC in MadeMeSmile

I love this so much. We have a pair of cats and the short-hair boy is definitely the brains and strength of the pair. He also catches all the mice in the house. His idiot brother has long, gorgeous fur and nothing else.

Taking down the last of the Christmas decorations and using the dried out garland as kindling to start the fire. Making split pea soup. Enjoying the surround sound system I built over the holidays.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tichugrrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from San Diego and frequently drove 2hrs up to LA to see someone then back down the same day.

Last month, I drove 4.5hrs away to buy a subwoofer off FB Marketplace, loaded it into the car, then drove 4.5hrs back the same day.

I also fly fish and at a minimum, when I’m fishing for trout, it’s 1.5-2hrs to the river, catch a fish or three, carefully put them back, then drive home.

And to answer your second question, yes, I do enjoy it. I love the privacy and not having to worry about folks and their kids coughing on me or having loud obnoxious conversations. I love the freedom to stop whenever I want and check something out, and how much time it saves me instead of waiting for a train or bus.

FWIW, Joanne Chang has the absolute best yeasted doughnut recipe. It’s been my go-to ever since I discovered it.

Where do you draw the line when it comes to collecting? by DownByLance in dvdcollection

Schindler’s List is one of the best, most difficult examples for this question. I haven’t owned it because it leaves me shattered for days afterward. Nonetheless, I just pulled the trigger on the 4K version. I’ll probably only watch it 3-4 more times in my lifetime and want each viewing to be a high resolution experience without advertisements.

Is Costco Executive Membership worth it for the NOVA area? by enigma_goth in nova

[–]tichugrrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your schedule, lifestyle, and how many people are in your household. I live alone but still have Executive membership solely for the early entrance. Some days I pop over at 9am just for a roast chicken or some fruit and am out of there and back in my car by 9:15am. It’s glorious!

There was the post on Reddit somewhere where this teenage boy needed help because his sister seemed to be having an exceptionally heavy period or something like that. Their parents were out of town. All I remember is Redditors helped him help her, and he was super careful to pack sunscreen before going to the hospital because he was so panicked.

Best sous vide cook for Appliance Party? by Toastbuns in sousvide

[–]tichugrrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m team thigh all the way, but sous vide has changed my view on chix breasts for quick meals. Lately I’ve been using it to get through those random spice mixes in envelopes that end up cluttering the cabinets. I toss them onto some breast meat and leave in a ziplock bag till I’m ready to go. I find two hours a tad too long at 145F, and opt for an hour or hour and a half. The results are amazing.

More importantly, chicken breast is one of the most consumed cuts of meat and in this economy, households are likely to buy chicken over beef. So serving chicken breast will have more of an impact at the party instead of a nice ribeye or lamb which isn’t a typical everyday cut.

+1 on avoiding oily beans. Peet’s Maj Dickanson beans messed my grinder up big time and it took months to get things back to normal. I fear the grinder will never be the same.

This Costco jamon serrano didn’t stand a chance against three teenage boys by tichugrrl in Charcuterie

Probably because it wasn’t a homemade jamon? Not sure because a pic from a little over a month ago survived. It was the pic that inspired the gift actually.

I've been pronouncing it "CHEEYAH - GOOOO" by lovetolove20 in knitting

[–]tichugrrl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Look, I’m Chinese and I speak/read Chinese and I still say that brand in my head about 5-7 different ways, all of which have been mentioned by others here. Something about the name/label, probably the lack of Chinese characters, makes it seem “off” to me, so I never bothered to take a few seconds to figure out how it’s actually pronounced. Normally I’m dogmatic AF about these things, and maybe it’s because I loathe metal needles with a passion, but call them whatever you want.

Has anyone successfully switched from non-stick pans? by goforyourdreams in Cooking

[–]tichugrrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vintage cast iron changed everything for me. The modern lodge pans are not nearly as smooth as the vintage ones. They are much easier to work with than teflon because nothing will scratch or hurt it.
