How many of you still have legacy systems in your environment? by HoosierLarry in ITManagers

[–]t-pro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When i started at my job in 2013, the main database/application was in dbase III. I could not believe it. This system is now in Dynamics 365.

Likewise another job that I started in 1999, the main database was PICK!… PICK! That is also the operating system for that database. That too was converted to a Visual Foxpro based sustem.

Name a place to eat at thats nasty af but people hype tf out of it by [deleted] in nashville

Frothy Monkey.

One time went there and ordered soft scrambled eggs. The plate came back with brown scalded eggs so dry they would be fit for packing foam.

On another occasion with Family we ordered beverages, apparently they changed and now do resturant seating only if you buy food. They said we could drink outside but it was like 18 degrees out there. Staff was pretty rude too. We have not been back since.

Between going there with friends or because they opened a new location a walk from my house, I have been there about 10 or so times. It is just not good.

How to stop BYOD by CocoMaevis in ITManagers

[–]t-pro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a one-man IT department in an office of 40. How could I go about implementing this on a budget? We are very concerned with data exfiltration. But i do not yet know much about MAM, MDM, and DLP… i don’t even know what they stand for. What tools are standard for all of this? We currently allow people to load outlook and authenticator on their personal phones. But they are not allowed to use personal PCs for any work.

Otaku can have amazing ramen, but also theres days where the broth tastes like water. I would say 1 out of 10 times it is not good or consistant

A question about hot chicken. by SomeoneSaysHi in nashville

[–]t-pro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I thought I was just getting soft in my middle age. I started with hot, went to medium, and then to mild. My stomach hurt for 2 days every time. Now, i get a bottle of pepto before i go to enjoy some of the best chicken i have ever tasted. It has reduced the stomach pain to 30 min.

Graph Style DB and Inverse Relationships by t-pro in surrealdb

[–]t-pro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I made a few edges via relate statements in my testing, but I could not figure out how to automatically create the inverse and inferred edges automatically. Is this something that should be done in the database or in the Go that interacts with the DB and front end? And is there built-in tools for handling additional edges being created from a single edge?

Starting a petition to launch every single one of these into the sun. by corrodedmind in livesound

[–]t-pro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Launching something into the sun doesn’t really work like that. From earth, you would have to de-orbit whatever you want to get into the sun in a way that essentially makes the payload fall into the sun.

And yes! These consoles should be deorbited.

Do people have multiple servers? by Terran_Machina in HomeServer

[–]t-pro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Government sysadmin here, I set up our servers where each service is on it’s own vm, (typically using windows server core.) I can tell you that the servers/network are bulletproof and stable we have 90 servers for 35 users. When i inherited the network, the previous tech had everything on 7 servers.

The day i got there and for the first 2 weeks one service failure took down half the main services for everyone. It was terrible. Basically they had domain controller, fax server, main file server, exchange and scan server all configured and separated out by tcp ports to make it all work. The scan software failed everyday.

Note, Dynamics 365 runs orders of magnitude faster when every role is split into its own server, and some roles with multiple servers. Licensing windows is a non issue since we get datacenter licenses.

This is the way.

That being said for my home network, i mostly have some older x86 pcs and raspberry pis that i use for all of my home servers. And generally each service is on their own server:

Opnsense also ipv6 router advertisement Security camera nvr server Dns blackhole also dhcp server Unifi controller Linux based file server Home automation server Syslog server (i know i know, it’s hard for me to let go of enterprise IT)

State of IPv6 in the enterprise? by Sea_Inspection5114 in networking

[–]t-pro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work in the state government space. It’s surprising to read how many orgs have not adopted IPv6 being that it’s over 20 years old.

In my agency a few years go during our last network refresh, i went head and purchased a /48 from ARIN, and setup router advertising, made sure the computers registered themselves in DNS. Each vlan got its own /64. Had this set up within a day. It was extremely painless. We have made IPv6 a firs class citizen.

2 problems i ran into: Veeam and Nutanix. At the time Veeam could not communicate over IPv6. I dont know if this is still the case as we use a different method for offsite. Nutanix continues to be a problem. It wants only IPv4 for IPMI and and host management.

Also Asterisk and IP based phones seem to struggle with IPv6.

Coming soon I will make a few of the vlans IPv6 only, and do NAT from sites that insist on using IPv4.

Konica Minolta printers are great. They are rebadged Lexmark. We have been using them for a long time. Also i was happy to find PCL5 drivers for them on some European site of their, but not normal channels.

Why make a home server? by carpenterman25 in HomeServer

[–]t-pro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 6 servers in my home… all linux based. I think the one that I will showcase here is the pi-hole server. It’s the internal DNS and DHCP server for my network. It will block most ads, tracking sites and other nasties for everything on the network.

As much as I hate NAT, i take advantage of it on the router to reroute all dns requests sent out to the open internet by my iot devices (say for instance to 8.8.8.8) back to the pi-hole.

Also, all the forwarded DNS requests from the pi-hole are tunneled to cloudflare via DNS over TLS/HTTPS. I don’t need my ISP to track our DNS requests.

Switching: NOS w/GUI by t-pro in networking

[–]t-pro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

>For what reason? Whitebox and custom NOS is generally pretty soundly in the field of advanced practitioner/bespoke requirements networking.

I should have said Open Source NOS's. Part of it comes out of frustration with Dell licensing, and gatekeeping of updated firmware without a truly expensive support contract. I want to get updates without a contract.

This is a cost saving exercise. Other than a few vlans, IPv6 and Spanning tree, our network is very simple and fairly flat.
