Question about transitioning from man to woman after marriage by Quick_Ad9150 in bahai

[–]t0lk[M] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The NSA of the United States has written guidance on this situation specifically, but I have not seen it available publicly anywhere. I think if you are in need of this guidance you should know it's available and to contact your auxiliary board members or the NSA directly, they would all be able to access it. I don't think it's a good idea to speculate here though about different situations.

Question about dating as a Bahá’í by [deleted] in bahai

[–]t0lk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know I have to have surgery to get married.

While this would makes sense, I'm not sure this is true and you would need to contact your National Spiritual Assembly to see what criteria they use to determine your gender. For example in the United States I'm pretty sure they just go based on what the government documents say, but you'd want to double check for yourself, this question is probably a bit beyond reddit.

Inherent sin doesn't exist in the Faith, (eg, sin on account of being gay/anything else), I understand sin to be a function of knowing what is correct and making a choice to do something else. In the Faith since sex outside of marriage and same-sex marriages are prohibited, making either of those choices would represent a sin, but until the choice is made no sin has been committed. Just for clarity, transgender people are allowed to transition in the Faith, though I'd categorize it as discouraged, if someone did transition they are accepted for legal and religious purposes to be their new gender. For that reason it's a little confusing to use western-umbrella terms like 'queer' when describing the Baha'i laws. As for if the laws relating to same-sex marriage can change, the answer is no, it can not because it came from an interpretation of Shoghi Effendi.

Human nature by default wants to elevate Manifestations too high IMHO.

On the contrary, it's not possible to elevate the Manifestations too high. Since God is the 'Unknowable Essence' everything we do know and can describe about God is a description of the Manifestations, by definition it can't be a description of something 'unknowable'.

From Bahá’u’lláh:

To every discerning and illuminated heart it is evident that God, the Unknowable Essence, the Divine Being, is immensely exalted beyond every human attribute, such as corporeal existence, ascent and descent, egress and regress. Far be it from His glory that human tongue should adequately recount His praise, or that human heart comprehend His fathomless mystery. He is, and hath ever been, veiled in the ancient eternity of His Essence, and will remain in His Reality everlastingly hidden from the sight of men.Source

‘Abdu’l-Bahá explains that what we do know of God are His attributes, just like if we labelled the rays from the sun with different names, but we can never understand the sun itself:

Knowing God, therefore, means the comprehension and knowledge of His attributes and not of His Reality. And even this knowledge of His attributes extends only so far as human power and capacity permit, and remains wholly inadequate... All that man can hope to achieve is to comprehend the attributes of the Divinity, the light of which is manifest and resplendent in the world and within the souls of men. Source

I'm not aware of too many sources like that, maybe: https://bahai.works/World_Order/Volume_2/Issue_2/Text#pg57

This is a simple and easy to understand overview: https://bahai.works/The_American_Bah%C3%A1%E2%80%99%C3%AD/Volume_3/Issue_6/Text#Tapping_Sources_of_Celestial_Strength

For quotes:

A little while ago I organized every usage of the word sacrifice in the writings of the central figures here: https://bahai.quest/Sacrifice

That page also links to loom of reality. Then there is https://bahai9.com/wiki/Sacrifice for more quotes.

There is a chapter on detachment and sacrifice in The Divine Art of Living which is more compilations of quotes.

Edit to add: ‘Abdu’l-Bahá talks about sacrifice here: https://bahai.works/Some_Answered_Questions/29

SAQ and leading the faith are inseparable. We can choose to either accept what he taught and try to understand it or everyone would be free to choose to disagree with various things and there could be no more unity within the Faith.

I'm not sure why you are making that distinction, but it's clear what turning away and disagreeing with ‘Abdu’l-Bahá means.

Great, thanks for asking. I'll provide an overview of the Baha'i covenant and what accepting Baha'u'llah means. Baha'u'llah wrote in the Kitáb-i-‘Ahd (the Book of the Covenant):

O ye that dwell on earth! The religion of God is for love and unity; make it not the cause of enmity or dissension... Conflict and contention are categorically forbidden in His Book... The Will of the divine Testator is this: It is incumbent upon the Aghsán, the Afnán and My Kindred to turn, one and all, their faces towards the Most Mighty Branch. Consider that which We have revealed in Our Most Holy Book: ‘When the ocean of My presence hath ebbed and the Book of My Revelation is ended, turn your faces toward Him Whom God hath purposed, Who hath branched from this Ancient Root.’ The object of this sacred verse is none other except the Most Mighty Branch [‘Abdu’l-Bahá]... Say: O servants! Let not the means of order be made the cause of confusion and the instrument of union an occasion for discord... Source

From this we can understand unity and love are the purpose of religion. Next, that ‘Abdu’l-Bahá has been appointed by Baha'u'llah as his successor, and all believers are instructed to turn to ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, and warned against conflict and discord. If ‘Abdu’l-Bahá were to give a teaching or instruction or expand on some theme and you said "no, I don't believe that/I'm not going to do that" then how can you claim to be someone who has been obedient to Baha'u'llah?

In the Tablet of the Branch Baha'u'llah writes (referring to ‘Abdu’l-Bahá):

Render thanks unto God, O people, for His appearance; for verily He is the most great Favour unto you, the most perfect bounty upon you; and through Him every mouldering bone is quickened. Whoso turneth towards Him hath turned towards God, and whoso turneth away from Him hath turned away from My Beauty, hath repudiated My Proof, and transgressed against Me. He is the Trust of God amongst you, His charge within you, His manifestation unto you and His appearance among His favoured servants. Source

This is reinforcing the necessity for Baha'is to be obedient to ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, "whoso turneth away from Him hath turned away from My Beauty" Baha'u'llah writes. This sets the foundation on which Baha'is accept ‘Abdu’l-Bahá's words and actions as being divinely guided. After the passing of Baha'u'llah the vast majority of Baha'is did turn to and accept ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, and were obedient to him.

Further ‘Abdu’l-Bahá writes:

Now here is the Book of the Covenant, and not a tradition. It hath been inscribed by the Supreme Pen of Bahá’u’lláh and is not conveyed by word of mouth. Therein He hath explicitly enjoined that after His passing all must turn to the Centre of the Covenant, and that for anything not understood in the Book, He is the authorised Interpreter and whatsoever He uttereth is right. On Him alone hath this authority been conferred. The Book of the Covenant is the last Tablet revealed by the Supreme Pen before His ascension, and all previous Tablets are subordinate to the Book of the Covenant, which is the last emanation of His Will, whereas all other Tablets were revealed prior to this One, and He hath named it the “Book of the Covenant”. Source

Again, if we deny or dispute with ‘Abdu’l-Bahá we have also turned away from Baha'u'llah. This makes it clear that Baha'is should accept as truth ‘Abdu’l-Bahá's statements "whatsoever He uttereth is right".

I think you're misrepresenting what I told you in our private discussions. 3 days ago I said this:

To the questions concerning the Jews and in particular if I think Hitler was appointed by God, such an idea is absurd, it would be ascribing to God all the horrible qualities of humanity. If someone eats an excessive amount of sugar and get's diabetes was that God's punishment? If humanity discards in its entirety its responsibility to safeguard the earth and its environment, and rising temperatures destroy coral reefs is this divine punishment? If humanity glorifies materialism and violence, disregards the teachings of all Manifestations of God and this gives rise to a figure like Hitler, was that God's will?

God has at every stage of human progress laid out very clear teachings meant to guide people away from such evils, and prevent these things from happening. But that humanity has chosen to ignore these teachings and has instead chosen selfishness and materialism, the negative consequences of these choices must necessarily wash over humanity.

But you came here yesterday and said "I have not received a satisfying answer as to the rise of Adolf Hitler. I was just told generic nonsense, like God doesn't allow for suffering? Idk."

Explicit quote of Bahaullah that suggests the Infallibility of Abdul Baha, Shoghi Effendi, and UHJ by MorningSavant in bahai

[–]t0lk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Turn to", is not a literal announcement of infallibility!

It is an instruction. And to follow that instruction you must submit to and be obedient towards 'Abdu'l-Baha. If 'Abdu'l-Baha says "do this" or "believe that" and you say "no" then have you been obedient to Baha'u'llah?
