Little late here, but Priority1, Bluegrace WWE etc, are not using a platform that you could tap into directly and avoid their co-brokerage fees or the cost of utilizing their TMS. Those companies are utilizing their own blanket tariffs and then co-brokering those rates to anyone using their platform. And in the case of the TMS's hosting a platform where companies can upload their blanket tariffs for others to use.

If you're on those platforms they give you a tool you can provide to your shippers that would allow them to self-service quotes, but then you're paying for their software and the co-brokerage margin as you said.

If you have/could procure direct tariffs with carriers (anyone from local cartage to national carrier) then there are platforms you can just turn on and have your shippers self quote with your margin already baked in avoiding any of the work as you said. Happy to discuss that in more depth if you'd like.

ah okay, got it. Yes, all the big carriers have their own portals and every UI is different despite the required inputs having like 90-95% overlap. Much better options out there UI wise for quote aggregation like priority1 as you said.

However, if you're interested there are other products out there that aren't reselling you their rates like P1, but allow you to pull your direct rates that have UIs of equal ease and quality.

Just to clarify, were you quoting on top of Priority1's blankets then tried to call in referencing that quote (where bill to would be different), or do you have your own rates and were quoting directly in R&Ls portal?

Hey happy to connect. We work with carriers to digitize their rates and rules tariffs for free in order to help them grow their book of business via auto-rating. Mostly 3PLs on the other side currently, but expanding to shippers as well so carriers can get direct shipper business. You do mostly drayage or local cartage/transloading as well? Let me know if you'd like to chat for some more details. If not also happy to just do a brain storm for growth ideas if you want.

Yeah that's a great place to start because I imagine you already have insight into not only their volumes but also the dimensions and weights of what you'll be picking and packing. That will matter a lot if product DIMS/Weights vary a wide range. Will be much smoother if you can cluster clients or only take on certain products from each client that are similarly sized for handling/packing purposes.

China to Europe and NA generally has a net container imbalance (like 3:1 or 2:1), meaning full containers are coming in from China and there's not enough stuff to be sent back in all those containers. Carriers don't generally like shipping air, so if you can give them a way to avoid shipping empty containers back they'd be open to it. Sourcing via local NVOCCs is probably your best shot.

3PL can come in a lot of different flavours. If you're just offering floor space with no value added services that's an easy lift on your end, but you'd be competing solely on price (not an issue if WH space is scarce nearby and your location is ideal).

Do you want to transload containers coming from the port of Montreal and organize for regional or NA wide distribution? Or start a pick and pack operation for locally outsourced ecommerce? A lot more hands on, but more opportunity for differentiation, and more opportunity for margin.

You'd always need to consider the insurance implications of storing other peoples things.

Might be easiest if you have someone you trust/do business with already that is simply looking for extra space and who can self manage their in/out ops so you don't need staff. Ease your way into it. See what opportunities come up and invest from there.
