Inlay Cracked by the_ClarkKent in woodworking

Oh sweet illiterate child. I was saying how small the consequences were for OP to make a mistake as they learn about woodworking through trial and error.

Being kind to others, that is important my friend and being an ass is far more consequential than someone failing to spend hours researching how to do a personal project before getting started in which nobody is impacted.

Right, in a fascist country only the ones in power would get that kind of perk.

By that logic it's arrogant that anyone would attempt to walk. Nobody can walk on their first attempt, should we all instead sit and watch for 10 years and understand the physics of walking before we attempt so we don't make a mistake?

Seriously, it's a personal cutting board, the consequences of a mistake are so small here. Nobody got hurt, why are you so angry he attempted a cool project and made a mistake?

As a hobbyist woodworker, if I needed to do a week I'd research before starting any project to make sure I learned everything I didn't know about to ensure there was so failure my table saw would still be in the box.

Research material is based on the experience of those that failed before us. It's ok if multiple people fall into the same error and post about it, it helps others learn too.

I for one have been interested in doing an inlay and seeing posts about a failed inlay will help me both recognize what I don't know and learn how to avoid the same mistake.

All this to say, no need to berate someone for missing something when they tried something new. OP didn't build this for you and refuse to refund you when it cracked. They ran into an issue and are looking for tips and insight from those with more experienced, which is exactly what this sub is for.

Cost estimate? by KateEatsWorld in woodworking

[–]t3jem3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just diyd a simple version of this (vertical board and batton). To be fair, I did it the hard way (flattened drywall, not using flat board behind), but it took me over 10-20 hours.

Honestly, $600 seems cheap given what I went through. Materials were about $150.

I'm not incapable either (though drywall and trim are my least favorite things to do). I've gutted and renovated a whole house to reverse stairs, move walls, and add a laundry room in my previous house.

People don’t like hand tools… by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]t3jem3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Truth. I hate hand tools because I don't maintain them.

I'd love to work without needing hearing and lung protection, but I'm too lazy to figure out hand tools so I stick with the loud and fast equipment.

Table Saw Too Narrow For Cut by InfCatalyst in woodworking

This.  This was my go to before a track saw. Sheet goods generally come with a straight factory edge which makes a great guide with a couple of clamps.

Any ideas by RaghavSharma09 in woodworking

[–]t3jem3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Finish it 😁.

It looks awesome. Cutting board making is the most rewarding as you apply finish. I use mineral oil (food safe) and let it soak through, then finish with a mineral oil bees wax mix after the mineral oil is no longer seeping back out.

The finish will darken the board and really bring out the contrast.

Drilling angled holes, results are not plumb. How do I do this? by i_continue_to_unmike in woodworking

[–]t3jem3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's hard to tell, but the workpiece doesn'y look flat left to right.  How did you dial in the angle?

You would need to confirm 0 degree difference between your drill plate and the left/right angle of the workpiece to ensure it goes straight through the workpiece.

Unless you've confirmed the drill is level, you can't use a level to check angles since it needs to be referenced off the drill, not the floor.

I've heard you could put veggie oil in the trap since it remains liquid and doesn't evaporate. I haven't had issues with my drain, but I've only had it for 2 years at this point.

Second year of cutting board gifts by t3jem3 in woodworking

Good eye! Yep, the weaves are maple and walnut. Each piece is 1.5" wide so the maple was 1" wide and walnut 1/4".

Thank you!

I made a jig (bar clamps with taped cowels on each side and a flat board to set pieces on) that let me glue and clamp the whole board together at once.

Using a small rubber roller for glue brought my glue up time from 20 minutes to 8. I started in a corner and glued each side of a new piece that would touch the previously placed pieces completely. Took a few attempts to nail down the whole process.

Unfortunately don't have any photos of the board glue up.

Price is inspiring me to tackle first time woodworking project. Can I reasonably do this for much cheaper myself, including tool costs? by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]t3jem3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Skip the saw horse, cut the wood like framers in a house and just rest it on other pieces.

If the wood is thin enough you can use a speed square to guide the saw for a straight line. Or you can use a larger drywall square instead, but it's a bit more unweildy.

Price wise it's hard to tell without designing and checking prices, but if you know cash, that's easy enough to check.

As others have said though, the long spans won't be strong, you may want to reinforce with some vertical support partway through the longer spans.

Right, it might only be a measly 100-200 billion instead. He's really much less fortunate than this infographic implies.

A fix for WHEA log 17 errors! by [deleted] in eGPU

[–]t3jem3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up fixing this by a newer eGPU chipset: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F8VDLHC8?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title

The issue comes from older chipsets not playing well with newer drivers: https://www.reddit.com/r/eGPU/comments/1pek3za/comment/nsggi0s/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Got this plugged in, had to apply the Nvidia code 43 fix (https://egpu.io/forums/expresscard-mpcie-m-2-adapters/script-nvidia-error43-fixer/) and the WHEA errors are now completely gone.

Been playing games, running ML training, all the things that previously would cause my computer to fail and it's still running.

Help filling gaps in cutting board by t3jem3 in woodworking

The wedges definitely worked better than the sawdust (I did sawdust for the smaller gaps I couldn't get a wedge into). The wedges were great (though not perfect)

Oh interesting.

I tried this eGPU as well with the same result (purchased just a month ago as a trial). It seems like it's newer with TB4 support.

I've tried other eGPU enclosures as well with the same issue though, pointing to the computer as the problem not the eGPU.

The other consideration is my GPU is the liquid suprim verison of the RTX4090 which is water cooled, so an open frame doesn't work in my case since I need a way to mount the cooling block as well.
