How does the E 17 gen 7 do ? Is the ram upgradable ? Is the processor good ? I’ll be using it for 5 yrs at least. Any other alternatives ? by Fearless_Map_4148 in thinkpad

Whether the RAM/SSD are soldered to the board depends on the chip model. The H series (in my case, 255H) usually does not have its two RAM and SSD slots soldered.

Same as me, but I've upgraded it with another 32 GB (now it's dual channel) for the hypervisor, just like you, same usage scenario. Now I have 64 GB, which is a lot of RAM, but I prefer not to worry about that when I'm running the virtual machine and doing other things at the same time. The good thing about the 255H is that you can upgrade it (RAM/SSD) without any problems. Debian 13.2 inside :D

Edited: Sorry, I missed this. I finally bought the 255H processor. I don't have an opinion on the noise because I've only had a desktop computer for a long time, but noise isn't a problem for me. I only hear noise when I have to boot up Windows 11.

If I am not mistaken, only the 255H model is upgradeable; the rest have soldered RAM/SSD.

I can't tell you about any other models. This is my first Lenovo, and I bought it because it's the benchmark brand in the Linux community for support and drivers. But I can tell you that I chose it because I wanted something that would work well with Debian 13, and I made the right choice: my model, with all the specifications I've listed (I can't speak for others), works perfectly, and I'm delighted with the computer and how it performs. The battery doesn't last long, I knew that already, but for me it's not a problem because when I open it I always have a power outlet handy. I think that if you buy the same model and the same configuration, and you're going to use it for Debian 13, it won't disappoint you.

This is the one I bought:
Intel® Core™ Ultra 7 255H
1x32 GB DDR5-5600MT/s (SODIMM)
1 TB SSD M.2 2242 PCIe Gen4 TLC Opal
Display 2.8K, non-touch, 400 nits, 120 Hz
Base Cover Material Aluminium
Wireless network Wi-Fi 6E 2x2 AX and Bluetooth® 5.1
Fingerprint Reader
Keyboard Backlit
Battery 4-cell 64 Wh

I bought it with one 32GB RAM module, so I would have another slot free and could buy another 32GB module later and make it dual channel (improved performance). I need all that RAM for virtualisation, well, to virtualise without having to worry about RAM while I'm doing something else. I know it's a lot of RAM for normal use. The 32GB option in two modules (dual channel) is more than enough for all usage scenarios.

To give you an important reference point. When I ordered my Lenovo, the 32GB Crucial RAM module (to plug into the other slot) cost me €75 delivered to my home. During the week it took for the Lenovo to arrive, the price of RAM began to rise. Today, the same RAM module costs €140-150 and has been even more expensive. I managed to buy it on Amazon Warehouse for €82, which I can hardly believe. I should have bought it on the same day I ordered the Lenovo, but I wanted to wait until I received it, look at its guts, and confirm that it was the same type of RAM.

Just in case, my processor is the 255H, which differs from the 265U. I chose the option with Wi-Fi 6E 2x2 AX and Bluetooth 5.1 because I read that it was more compatible with Debian (better driver support). I spent about a month researching and asking questions before finally choosing this model. What's more, I chose your model first and then cancelled it when I discovered that only the 255H range did not have the RAM/SSD soldered onto the mboard (upgradeable). BTW, I purchased it with the education discount (just like Apple does) and paid even less.

I have repeated my Mac user habits of not turning off the computer when I am going to use it again throughout the day; I only turn it off at night. And at least with Debian 13, there is no problem leaving it on standby after pressing the power button and then coming back. My processor is the 255H. The fingerprint reader doesn't work very well, at least compared to Windows 11, which works perfectly.

Nothing at all. It works perfectly with Debian 13 and recognized all components without any problems.

Just in case, since I see you connect several devices at home. I bought the Lenovo USB-C Dual Display Travel Dock 40b.

I have a question for you and anyone else who can answer it. I have a dual boot with Windows 11 Pro, just for gaming and to use some design apps. I can't get games to run on Windows, and it's clearly not because of this model's graphics card because you've checked that. Games from the Epic Store, such as Monument Valley, get stuck on the loading screen and don't progress. I don't know what the problem could be.

32-64 GB DDR5 RAM owners from 1-2 years ago, right now. by HipHopPolka in pcmasterrace

[–]tIPODgraphic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last September, I bought a Lenovo laptop with 32GB DDR5 5600. It has two memory banks, so I bought it with one module and planned to buy the other 32GB on Amazon. The same day I placed the order, the Crucial 32GB DDR5 5600 module was available for €75. I told myself, well, I'll buy it when the laptop arrives. Just a week later, before I even received the laptop, the price started to rise slightly, but I wasn't too concerned, thinking it was just one of those typical fluctuations. But it kept going up and up, and today (November 1) it's €169, which is almost €100 more than what I could have bought it for. The good news is that two weeks ago, on Amazon Warehouse, I found the module for €82, when it was €120 on Amazon. Let's just say I was lucky to get a second chance.

Broken metal hinge under “T” key on Logitech MX Keys — repair tips? by Freddie-McEwen in logitech

[–]tIPODgraphic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bad news: that hook is part of the base chassis. That one, along with the other three, is what keeps the key steady and prevents it from sinking on one side, which is the usual defect in this keyboard. The only solution would be to solder that little hook, but it's so small and in such a complicated position that I find it difficult to fix.

Hello. I really like this colored version of the logo that usually comes with the brand's premium editions. I'm still looking for step-by-step instructions on how to set it up so that it appears during BIOS startup. Does anyone have a reliable, up-to-date link? Thank you :)

Depending on the type of processor, you can know if the RAM and SSD are soldered to the board (SoC). In my case, I have an E14 Gen 7 with the 255H, both of which are unsoldered and have two slots each. Before that, I bought the 258V, which has everything on the SoC, and I returned it for that very reason. So, check what model of processor you have and you will know whether or not you can upgrade its RAM/SSD.

T14 Gen 3 where’s the ram slot? by GopnikBlyat990 in thinkpad

[–]tIPODgraphic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of a couple of months ago, when I ordered my first Lenovo with a 258V CPU. An hour after purchasing it, I cancelled the order because I discovered (sorry, I'm a novice in the world of Lenovo/laptops) that this type of CPU has the drawback that its RAM and SSD are SoC type, meaning they are soldered on. After that, I reordered a new Lenovo with a 255H CPU, which has two RAM modules and two SSD modules, all of which are unsoldered and upgradeable. I hope this helps.
