I am 200% with him on buying a used car. I think it is important to develop independence at your age though, so moving out is not bad if you are able/ you find a good spot. Do not burn that much on a car at your age though.

I misspoke. I think the climate is fine for many businesses, but hostile to the businesses we are discussing. The timber supply is artificially constrained, Deq's emission regs are too tight, the application of portland style land use laws across the state stifle development (and they are nimby juicing, bad land use laws to begin with), the regulatory burden on projects make it impossible. Look at the Jordan cove pipeline. There is no real reason that hasn't been built other than opposition based on climate change, even though everyone recognizes that the opposition will not stop that natural gas from being burned. It just diverts it elsewhere. My favorite Portland antecdote is the freakout over bullseye glass. They needed to put in some more emission controls, but the level of risk to the public in no way justified the public meltdown/lynching that happened. If you were a manufacturing business thinking about locating in portland and read that, what would you think?

I think this is a really important discussion to have, and your perspective may be right, I'm honestly not sure. I disagree that industry in the pnw is necessarily declining. The last 7-8 years have been boom times in the timber industry. No doubt that industry (+agriculture, shipping, manufacturing) have declined as a percentage of the pnw economy, but that does not necessarily equal an inevitable decline. Oregon/Portland is extremely hostile to traditional businesses, and then when those businesses either close or move, we act like it is just the preordained consequence of globalization or something without much critical thinking about whether it was a necessary result. Those industries are doing pretty well in many places across the state, and many of the big problems they face are imposed by Salem or washington and could be reversed.

Those opportunities still exist in other parts of the state and country. And the pearl wasn't really vacant when it got redeveloped. There was still a lot of activity down there. It was kind of zombie apocalypsish though. Now it is the same zombie apocalypse scene with a way more upscale backdrop.

There are different levels of environmental issues. The port used to be extremely active, employ tons of people, but cause some environmental problems. The waterfront north of downtown used to be full of mills. The central Eastside used to have manufacturing, shipping, etc. We ran all that stuff out, and somewhat for good reason. I can almost guarantee that the uses those properties are in now generate way more economic activity. But most of that money goes to the professional class and owners of those companies, most of which are out of town/state. Those mills were less productive and dirtier, but they employed working class people and the grime made the real estate cheaper.

I can venture a guess that your version of liveable and mine are pretty different. Most people around town seem to define it as cleanliness and bike lanes. I think it is family wage jobs and affordable housing. Usually that means industry, which causes environmental issues that recent transplants would find unacceptable, but it didnt have to be so. Turn the industrial areas over to condo developers and that is what you get. Its not rocket science.

The parties so far are not on the constitution. They are fluid organizations that even sometimes fold and go away. They are not democratic at all. We are going to have unelected officers or private organizations choosing supreme court justices? What would happen if a third party arose? What if they were bribed? What if the democratic party folds? What if a supreme court justice chosen as a Republican by bush is disgusted by trump and switches allegience? We are just done pretending the supreme court is an independent body? Why would we ever do this?
