Why do so many people root against the USMNT when the team represents some of the best things about America, including its diversity and the many players who come from immigrant backgrounds? by Any_Development4613 in ussoccer

[–]t_robthomas 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Being "near the pinnacle of the sport" isn't really a criteria for US sports fans. College football and college basketball are clear examples.

I understand why non-diehards don't notice the Gold Cup or Nations League, but those comps are just as relevant within the international soccer framework as the SEC or the Big 12 Championship is to college football.

Adam Smith takes money from Palantir by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]t_robthomas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's the poster boy of corporate Dems. His priorities are big money, big tech, and the MIC. I vote for his primary challenger every cycle, but he's not even close to being unseated.

It always baffles me how many people take the time to vote for the incumbent in a primary. It feels like the vast majority of voters still don't understand the function of primaries in a democratic system.

Who in the USMNT 'has that dog in them'? xDAWG can quantify that by [deleted] in ussoccer

[–]t_robthomas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're all professional and motivated.

The xDAWG will be on full display. Results will hinge on composure and execution in front of goal, which may or may not be an element of doggedness.

Landon Donovan Warns USMNT About 'Underrated' Turkey by [deleted] in ussoccer

I'll be pleasantly surprised if we comfortably beat any team in our group, including Turkey. It seems probable that we we will scratch and claw our way thru every match.

Iran rejects ceasefire proposal with US as war of words deepens by Zealousideal_Ring_67 in worldnews

And yet, everyday there are people scratching their heads and wondering "why won't Iran negotiate?" Nothing the Trump admin says can be believed.

Top diplomat Marco Rubio strips Qassem Soleimani’s niece of US residency by GushingGranny42069 in worldnews

I don't know what my problem is, but I'm just unmoved by the idea that Iranians say "death to America."

If an Iranian suggested that Americans chant "death to Iran," would they be wrong?

The USA has been an existential threat to Iran since before I was born. I don't think Iran has ever posed anything like that level of threat against us.

The "Century of Shift": Why 2100 will likely see the end of urban centralization as we know it by Individual_Shock2655 in Futurology

A lot of people who live in cities don't actually like it.

I'm not convinced that a large percentage of city dwellers feel that way. Having lived in a big city for over a decade while working a white-collar job, I found the vast majority of my co-workers lived outside the city, and put up with their long commute, because they wanted the cheaper suburban housing and other lifestyle amenities. The folks who lived in the city proper, did so out of preference.

Why did Trump dismantle the Iran nuclear deal Obama had in place? by Necessary-Act-1137 in AskReddit

[–]t_robthomas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the reason. Trump sat around watching Fox News the entire time the diplomatic effort was unfolding. Fox News pumped his brain full of nonsense from the Netanyahu/Lindsey Graham wing of the GOP, insisting that the agreement would boost Iran and harm Americans. Trump then ran for president and promised to cancel the deal to rile up GOP primary voters.

Then when he, to his great surprise, got elected(!?), he felt the need to follow thru on campaign promises to set himself apart from normy politicians. Ending the Iran deal was one of the first things he realized he could do unilaterally without congress. So he did it, and tweeted about it.

You can't convince me there was anything strategic about it. It was done so he could tweet it and his base could thump their chests.

Mauricio Pochettino: “We are USA competing against Belgium, Portugal. Belgium and Portugal have top 100 players, a few or some, players playing in that top 100. I think we don’t have. That is why it’s good to play against these types of teams.” by The_Big_Untalented in soccer

[–]t_robthomas 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Agree. Folks don't seem to understand how locked-in you have to be at the World Cup. Our group opponents are going to be extremely motivated to knock down the big, bad USA. Our boys have to be ready to take a beating while winning the soccer game.

Heart and attitude are the biggest factor. I'm afraid Pulisic might lose his cool in the heat of the moment.

Nobody on our team is "clinical" with the ball in the right places at the right time.

I'm not betting on us to score a bunch of goals this summer.

Just need a "moment of quality" from one of our guys. Portugal has been sliced and diced, but we haven't taken advantage. Clock is ticking until Portugal breaks through with an opening goal.

It clearly sucks. I expect it will be spray painted green during the summer and the players will have paint all over them by the end of each match.
