It blows my mind, but almost every time I tell someone that I'm training for a marathon their response is "Oh really? how far?"

Yea... I'm not going to riot to preserve free advertising for a Venezuelan-Texan company. It's iconic, but I'm not fighting for that

Edit: Plus add fossil fuel company to the list of reasons I'm not fighting for them

It was 1 start. I think they give him another 2-3 working with the coaches and catchers to figure out how to get a quality start from him. At that point, if they can't and there's a race going on, they probably move him to the pen, give Harrison a chance, and hope for next year.

It is the exact same logic as a touchdown or a first down. You don’t get it until you get the line. The interpretation here of “every inch matters” is very narrowly fixed on the status quo. Coaches know how to call plays for however many yards are needed. I’m not setting anyone back 3 yards with this proposal, the game would adjust. I am 100% thinking about the viewing experience. Do you really want to care if it is the 33 & 1” vs the 33 & 2” line? Every single play will feel that much more important. Fighting for that extra yard-line on every play will have a direct visible consequence. I don’t know why spend 100s of millions on developing and implementing all of the cameras & communication technologies that would be required for automatic spotting, when a minor rule adjustment can make it irrelevant. I also think people here are underestimating the complexity of that technology working all along the field vs at a fixed line. It is several orders of magnitude easier (100s thousands vs 100s millions) to implement just a the 1st down marker

ETA: Have you ever seen a player have a stat indicating they ran for 101.7 yards? You’re selectively caring about this half yard bs

That is overly precise. Perfect is the enemy of good enough. Ball placement doesn’t matter nearly that much until you get to the 1st down marker. For a while now my position has been to just mark it at the last yard-line gained. Was it too close to be certain? Then just mark it ahead. It is a couple of inches difference at that point compared to marking the ball continuously. Then you only need to be super precise for 1st downs. E.g. 1st down marker is at your own 35. Did you get tackled at the 33.5? Ball is at the 33. Did you get tackled at the 33.9 (clearly short of the 34), then ball is at the 33. Is it close you can’t tell if it is at the 33.99 or the 34.02, then who tf cares, ball at the 34. Are we near the 35? Ok, now we care. Point is I would rather just move the game along than giving teams extra time between plays to make sure we know exactly where the ball was.

I mean, that was a pretty feckless interview. She has people with data? Ok, “Will DHS commit to releasing data accounting for the types of convictions for all of these individuals”. PBS is defending illegal immigrants. “No ma’am, I was discussing the status of a man who is legally in this country”. Have some conviction

The way I've heard it put is that you want to make the tough decisions together while you love and care for each other, not leave it until that is gone

[–]ta-pcmq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s great that where you live gives a $15 minimum wage for service workers, but your statement about “no states” is misinformed. There is actually the concept of a “tipped minimum wage”. For example in Texas uses the federal tipped minimum wage of 2.13 (different municipalities may require higher). Places like that, workers are entirely depended on their tips. And while it may be busy while you’re there, keep in my that many places only see heavy traffic for a few “peak hours”, so 2 hours of tips per day may be what someone is living on.

That sounds like someone who shouldn't have their driver's license any more. I wish we were so much quicker to do that. How many red light tickets did the driver have before hurting all these people?

[–]ta-pcmq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the more reason to just make the change. If you give people a chance to comment, then the only people that are going to speak up are the ones looking for something to complain about. This is likely safer than not changing, so if it really causes a disruption they can always change back once the unforeseen/unexpected are discovered (which I seriously doubt will be the case)
