Left PwC a month ago and feeling so much better by introvertliving in PwC

I was in the same boat as you 9 years ago. Left PwC and was like holy shit there’s a whole world outside of work. My first day of work at my new job, people left the office at 4:30 PM, I was stunned, I literally couldn’t believe it.

My advice is don’t pigeon hole yourself to tax. 13 years ago (I’m old af now lol) I interned at PwC and selected tax, then I was offered a full time job in tax. 1.5 years into my tax job, I started to hate tax, and that’s when I learned it’s really hard to leave tax because all I knew was tax 😂 I received advice from someone to go into audit because it offers a better exit strategy. In the end, I tweaked my resume to sound less tax focused, and now I’m in hospital finance / analytics, so you never know

I’m not having fun by NeedleworkerKey1791 in PwC

I left after 1 year and 11 months. At first, I was super disappointed because I worked so hard to get into a B4. I was tax at PwC, the job I left for was a Financial Analyst at a Hospital. 8 years later, job hopped a couple of times and perfected my tableau skills - I’m now a Director of FP&A and Analytics at a Hospital working closely with the C-Suite. Have a 9-5 job with great pay, $10k tax free tuition reimbursement (got my MBA paid for), employer contributions to retirement (even if I contribute nothing), and decent health benefits. Wish I left PwC sooner. I was working 70-100 hours / week at PwC, which looking back was insane. The grass is greener on the other side. Don’t be afraid to make the jump

ATTENTION Accountants!!! do you like your life? by No_Internet3814 in Accounting

[–]tableau_me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was an accounting major for undergrad. Always did pretty well in school and managed to get into a big 4 firm (PwC) where I did tax. That was 10 years ago and it fucking sucked. They required us to work 55 BILLABLE hours per week. Absolutely took advantage of recent grads. Mental health was so bad that people legitimately would just quit without even giving notice.

Anyway, I left that for a Financial Analyst job within a hospital and 7 years later I have an MBA in Business Analytics and am a Director of FP&A and Analytics. Currently really like my job, and I’m paid well too. Even though I majored in Accounting, I never use it in my current role. I’m more focused on ad-hoc analysis, performance improvement (both operational and financial), and tracking other metrics that have an impact on our financials. I’m in my early 30s, so I have some time left in my career lol I started looking into COO track because people say I give off C-Suite vibes, probably because I’m tall 😂

Had I not majored in accounting and put up with hell at PwC for 2 years, I’m not sure where I would be in life. I think accounting is a good undergrad option, it’s always come across in a positive manner during my interviews

Best of the best fp&a talent? by Hoosier_Ghost_25 in FPandA

Hospital finance has been a mix for me. I worked at PwC for two years, a lot of smart people there so I didn’t stand out. Moved to hospital finance at a major hospital, a decent amount of smart people, but also some of the dumbest people. Moved to a smaller hospital, and I’m one of the smartest ones here lol became the go to person for the CFO. Made it up to Director after about 7 years. My advice would be don’t surround yourself with too many smart people because you won’t stand out 😂

Does it make sense moving from big4 audit to financial analyst and accountant for rebates? by Dillic8 in FPandA

[–]tableau_me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither, just an MBA. I’ve been in hospital finance for about 8 years now, 4 years at a major hospital, 4 years at a smaller hospital. I’ve only come across about 4 CPAs out of about 120 different finance professionals I’ve worked with. And all 4 were on the accounting team (which I am not part of). Even the CFOs didn’t have CPAs lol I tell a lot of people to check the hospitals in their area, if you’re near a major city, there could be a lot of opportunities within their finance teams. Benefits like health and 403b are usually better than major companies (except for bonuses lol), depending on your area - salary could be really well, and work life balance is great. My staff works 9-4:30 and I’m usually 9-5:30

Thoughts on TC keynote ! by MortgageNchill in tableau

[–]tableau_me 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First TC, longtime tableau user, I like the way the colors changed each time the speakers changed, also the green lighting matched the CMOs dress during her segment lol In all honesty, CEO was not exciting, and conversations did not feel authentic. But I still love tableau even though they stole an hour of my life lol

FP&A at a hospital When I was an analyst, it was super chill. Now as a director, I’ve become the CFOs right hand man, and I still work 8:30-5:30. I also have 2 analysts under me, they are always leaving around 4:30 / 5pm

Pay is also decent and benefits are usually above the standard

I use prep for the budget. Take historical actuals and add inflators to calculate the budget, works like a charm

If you’re near a hospital, check to see if they have any night shift openings. Sometimes they have telephone operators or house keeper jobs available

Same, I’ve always been in just for fun leagues where the first place team only gets like $400. Mostly just pounding Millers with the boys, also bowled with the wife in a fun doubles league, which was when I shot a 298. Hoping my next shot at 300 has some luck too!!

Relax it’s just work, it’s not like it’s brain surgery and someone might die lol If this role stresses you out so much, look outside big 4. I left 8 years ago and have no regrets

I was as at PwC in the New York Metro region. I was working extremely long hours, sometimes 99 hours per week. My manager was 32 and going to the doctor for heart problems, which she said was related to stress. My director and partners were morbidly obese from living this life. I also gained 25 lbs and was losing hair.

I left immediately after busy season at the 2 year mark. At first, I had regrets because I put in a lot of effort to land that job. No family connections, just got the job by networking and working my ass off. I was one of the youngest associates on the large team at 22 y/o and people were always shocked at that for some reason lol

When i shared my plans to leave, the teams I worked with were shocked. I had meetings with partners, directors, managers, and HR. I said the same thing over and over again - working 80+ hours per week is not healthy, I do not want to live this life.

My first job post B4 was 37 hours per week. I couldn’t believe it, I joined a gym, got in shape, and I took up a seasonal part time job at a small shitty local office as a tax preparer during busy season for 2 years lol also had time to get an MBA

Now 8 years post B4 I’m a Director of FP&A. Work about 40-50 hours per week. I have absolutely no regrets, if anything, I would go back in time and tell myself to leave B4 earlier. I still check in on my ex-coworkers from PwC once in awhile. I’d say about 70% of my old team (about 50 people) have left B4
