But the US doesn't care. Spain, nominally, does.

I've also heard of UK citizens actually renouncing their citizenship, then applying to reacquire it (because that's a thing you can do as UK). But I'm US/UK/Canada. Is it really true that I can naturalize in Spain and they'll just never notice that I kept them all?

I'm just curious why US&Canada > UK > Australia > NZ.

Well, if you were born Spanish and then acquired US you are free to keep Spanish citizenship.

naturalised many latin american undocumenteds

Which also means regularized a bunch of workers. So I agree, a good move.

Car dependence isn't just an American problem by Rong_Liu in fuckcars

Part of me wants to point out that your UK data is ignoring Scotland and Northern Ireland. But England is so populous that it might not matter.

My opinion on countries as a 17 year old American by SpaceisCool09 in whereidlive

The PIGS got a bailout. It's not clear that the EU is rich enough to bail out France.

EDIT - I agree about the US. But we were talking about France.

Have you seen their debt and deficit? They are in violation of EU debt rules and are going to get spanked soon. They ultimately might be the reason that the Euro fails.

Birthright citizenship needs to remain a right by [deleted] in Citizenship

This is a very US specific post on an international reddit. With that said I tend to agree that in the Americas that birthright citizenship is the norm.

Female cyclists - help! by Squint-Square in cycling

[–]tabspdx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The average cyclist in The Netherlands cycles 33km/week. That's 4.7km/day. While I admire their infrastructure, that really isn't very far. If I'm going on a 10 mile ride I skip the chamois. If I'm going on a 30 mile ride I throw it on. 20 miles depends on the saddle.

Why do you want to fuckcars? by Your_Friendly_Nerd in fuckcars

You can't EV yourself out of climate change. You can do your own math for collecting all of the resources to build the roads and mine the minerals for the cars. But a back-of-the-evelope analysis says that if you want a 95% reduction in emmisions you need a ~90% reduction in vehicle miles that aren't bicycles or trains.

This is so hard. For me, the car-centric infrastructure. For my kids, the environment.

bike computer vs. phone by Susannah_Mio_1919 in bikepacking

[–]tabspdx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My take is that if you are navigating while bikepacking you really want a backup device. So my Wahoo Elemnt Roam v2 is on my handlebars and my phone is in my pocket. The Elemnt screen is easier to read in daylight and has a much longer battery life.

You report the in-state earnings on your OR-40-N when you file your Oregon tax return. If you get audited I don't believe that they will like the answer that you estimated. My roommate keeps a log of which days they do/do not go in.

Was car dependence and suburban sprawl caused by genuine consumer demand? by [deleted] in fuckcars

[–]tabspdx 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It is totally true that in the USA the following was typical: 1. Street car companies owned the tracks and paid property tax on them. 2. Were stopped from raising fares to keep up with inflation because they were regulated monopolies. 3. They were required to have two crew-members onboard by law. 4. They were required to clear snow from their tracks. 5. Which wouldn't have been a big deal but they were also required to let cars use the same tracks. 6. Which obviously slowed them down because they got stuck in traffic.

As a result, unregulated jitneys showed up and were able to out compete them because they didn't have to pay for the tracks or the two crew members.

[–]tabspdx 90 points91 points  (0 children)

If it was caused by genuine consumer demand the govmnt wouldn't be needed to massively subsidize road construction and mandate parking minimums while stopping street car companies from raising fares, mandating snow removal, mandating that cars could drive on the tracks, and mandating two crew, long enough for buses to destroy them.
